What is the need for starting the sim in safe mode?

I have never found a need for starting in safe mode and have never used it so why the option it seems pointless.

It gives you the option to start in safe mode after a CTD. That means that it will not load the content of the community folder which is often the cause of a CTD anyway. Personally, I would prefer it if the option did not exist as if I have an issue, I am perfectly capable of emptying the community folder myself.

Not only will it not load the Community folder, but any marketplace items purchased as well should not load.
The idea for safe mode is to return the sim to a “vanilla state” so no addon conflicts can affect the sim.

This past weekend 2 days in a row, I was getting CTD’s on startup of the sim, both times I had to start in safe mode then quit to desktop and then restart in normal mode and it worked again. I did not change any contents in my community folder but for some reason it needed 1 time each day to start in safe mode otherwise it just crashed on every startup. So the problem causing the CTDs did not seem related to my community folder, but it went away after a start in safe mode.

It’s been invaluable with troubleshooting issues here and on the official discord server. Means you can be completely sure whether issues are due to 3rd party content (community folder or marketplace) without having to uninstall everything manually.

Hello,
Moved to Community Support > Miscellaneous.

Same experience and conclusion in my case, not all CTD’s are Community addons related.

Using MSFS Addons Linker you don´t need to uninstall any file from Community, just create an empty profile, that´s all.

This program should be officially incorporated to MSFS taking into account that according to MS Asobo, the Community can be a source of problems.

In fact, before updating MSFS I clean Community with my empty profile.

Don’t forget any marketplace add-ons (free & paid). The linker has no control over those.

I think Asobo using the add-on linker would just solve the symptoms and not the issue itself. Asobo needs to have error handling when loading add-ons to disable misbehaving add-ons, essentially cutting out the troublemaker. It may not be easy but they need something to either stop CTDs caused by add-ons, let us know what add-on is giving issues or disabling that add-on. It’s unclear how easy/difficult that would be to implement but would solve the problem.

Asobo could have control of marketplace with a linker (symlinks).

As said before I have rarely experienced a CTD due to addons.
