This has been mentioned for a while in the development updates. What exactly is a ‘Scenery Gateway’?
Hello, we recently announced in the latest Dev Update that the World Hub Alpha will begin in May. You can find the latest Active Development roadmap here: April 13th, 2023 Development Update - Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The Scenery Gateway, or World Hub, will be a tool for users to claim and edit default airports in the base sim to add more realism to the world. It will be a community effort combined with Asobo moderation and approval and something we are very excited to bring to simmers soon!
Hello,
Just for a little context, the term “scenery gateway” was the term users who are familiar with X-Plane used when they asked the team for the ability to modify scenery and airports in MSFS.
The MSFS team is answering this request and building their own separate product, as Jummivana stated above. And so far, it’s looking like it will be called the World Hub.
This has the potential to be as game changing and universally beloved as the new MLB pitch clock.
Will there be basic tools for anyone to edit in the world hub.
Or are the tools needed to create and edit something the end user has to have already?
The microsoft/Asobo sdk is available for free and the developer mode can just be enabled in the general settings. That’s what you need and covers the basics. Of course, adding your own custom objects, textures and animations, you will need external software which can do that. However, I don’t think custom made objects will be used in the World Hub. Like with the X-Plane gateway, I would expect that only a standard set of assets can be used for airports.
Yes, it will only be using the base assets and nothing custom. The SDK folks in November 2022 went even further to say it’s not even really about scenery or the way things look, which is interesting because that’s not how anyone else seems to market this tool. I imagine that may lead to a gap between what people are expecting and what it really is.
