What is this Plane Doing?

I’ve seen this on Flight Radar twice this past few days in different locations. It is some very precise flying. But what are they doing? Searching the internet for similar flights around the US, I find nothing but people speculating.

It is not displayed on FR but checking other tracking sites, it appears to be N377EB.

Weird! One in the UK near Liverpool was doing exactly the same thing today albeit on a much smaller scale, Ravenair, I forget the type but it was definitely a GA prop.

Could it be Googlemaps or Bing or some other air survey thing?

Most likely photographic survey of some sort although at 6500ft it would be interesting to know what it was surveying, especially as the tracks are so close together.

Hmmmm listed as a Bank of Utah Trustee, not available for public tracking, although it appears to have been tracked! :grinning:. Maybe it’s the Bears checking out new sites. :eyes:

The Bears started demolishing Arlington Park race track last week so I think they are set on a new home.

Not set yet. They announced they’re going ahead with demo, but are now not looking solely at that site due to “things”. Hmmmmm

Could be taking aerial photography or doing a LIDAR scan or something. I saw one over my head in 2020. Was hoping I’d end up in the MSFS photogrammetry (but alas, no!).

Possibly. I had looked up LIDAR earlier and found it is used for a lot of things; mapping, mining, agriculture, surveys, forestry, etc. etc.

It’s aerial photography. The altitude is typical for that kind of mission.

Could be doing some Sponge Moth (or other bug)spraying? We had aerial spraying over Vancouver Island last week.

I have emailed the county government mapping department where it is over. I’ll see if they know what is being mapped and by whom.

Similar, also northern Illinois.

@Habu2u2 If this had been over Naperville, then definitely it’s the Bears :bear::bear::bear:

Not far away from my two. Curiously, the first one I saw was a horizontal pattern, the second a vertical pattern and yours is diagonal.

Sounds like establishing leverage for negotiations with Arlington Heights.

Probably held in trust for potentially a foreign owner. That’s usually how they can lease an aircraft that’s not based in their own jurisdiction.

Here in the US (Baltimore, specifically) we have Cessnas that fly patters continuously over the city collecting large general arrays of surveillance data. The theory is that when a crime is committed, AI tracking software can sift through the area in question looking for specific person/car movements/changes in location etc that may help track down the offender/theif/murderer etc. The beauty of it is that it doesn’t have to be in real-time.

They’re back on Sunday, picking up where they left off yesterday.

Looks like a SAR pattern

Maybe they are flying a rescue mission in NeoFly.

See those all the time over here (Netherlands). Usually aerial surveys , for all kinds of clients. See for example https://en.kavel10.nl/products/
