Loving FS2020 right now but want to alleviate stuttering and FPS loss in more complex areas, so what components would you guys recommend to add to my system? My GPU is almost 98% utilization and CPU around 38% - 40% utilization so would a better GPU be my answer?
I’m running the following:
RTX 3060 12GB
Ryzen 5 3600x
48GB DDR4 3000MHz
B550 Tomahawk motherboard
Corsair 750W gold power supply.
(I also have a ryzen 7 3700x but the single core preformace seems better on the Ryzen 5)
I suppose so, was hoping direct x12 would bring some better performance but here we are. Maybe the sim will be optimized at some stage down the line then
My specs are:
RTX 3080
32 GB RAM 2666 MHz
i7-10700K
512 GB SSD only for MSFS
Corsair 750W
Everything is set to ultra. My monitor is LG 27GP850 so I play the game at 1440P. I get almost 60 FPS at high altitudes and 35FPSs when I’m over a city or approaching.
For cities where the scenery is very dense such as Paris, New York I get around 25FPS. I hope this helps a little.
I honestly suggest you to wait for a possible optimization. I honestly expected huge FPS increase when I switched from RTX 2060 to RTX 3080 but the performance impact was not as big as I thought.
Overall I’m happy with the performance but I still believe it will be better in future. I don’t think it’s a good time to invest for a better rig for MSFS.
To be honest that’s a fairly capable mid range gaming PC. I’m fairly certain that if you threw DCS or IL-2 at it, even in VR it would deliver extremely good performance.
Right now I’m not sure that MSFS2020 is in a particularly good place and therefore upgrading hardware simply in the hope it returns some sort of stunning performance is a bit of a waste.
However, there is some good news on the horizon too.
Intel just recently made it’s first big platform and socket change in a long time. AMD follow this with their own socket and platform change in 2022.
There are benefits here that go beyond DDR5 and increase the bandwidth between CPU and network/storage etc which could actually be good for FS2020 as it’s pretty heavy on both.
I’m not 100% convinced that Intel have actually pulled their fingers out properly with Alder Lake, it’s good. Just not as good as it probably should have been.
As you are already on the AMD team I would recommend waiting a few months into 2022 to see what team red announces as their next move. Chances are this might be the point at which to upgrade. (Available DDR5 should have matured a bit by then also)
This should also give Asobo some time to get their stuff together too.
Until then…play something else for a bit to remind yourself that your PC actually does work ok.
I agree with the opinions expressed above.
MSFS not optimized, not the right situation to invest thousands of dollars in major system upgrades.
Two observations regarding OP’s question:
CPU: OP is on socket AM4. It is likely that AMD’s first response to Alder Lake will come in early Q1 2022, most likely in January. It will involve a 5x00x refresh with better cache (Zen3+ aka Rembrandt)
GPU: Nvidia is releasing a refresh of 2060 Super next week, followed in Q1 2022 by souped up versions of 30 series cards. They will be sold at MSRP for those lucky enough to get them.
Around the same time, Intel will introduce their Ark Alchemist discrete GPUs.
Therefore, for someone like OP with an AMD based system, I would recommend waiting for the dust to settle in the next quarter with a finger on the trigger with regards to GPUs at MSRP.
TL/DR: Try to score a 3080 refresh at MSRP when they land, and wait for AMD annoucements in January before any decisions on an AMD CPU upgrade.
Could you please share your FPS numbers when taking off from a busy airport in a large PG city (Heathrow, JFK, etc) aboard an airliner or glass cockpit aircraft (TBM930 for instance).
I am curious how the 5950x/3070 combo performs, whether MSFS is mainthread limited at 1080p/1440p or 4k in busy airports.
Sorry don’t fly many big airports and glass cockpits. Also I don’t check FPS. I am only interested whether gameplay is fluid. So I am the wrong guy to ask I am afraid.
I’ve upgraded from a RX6700XT to a 6900XT and it’s a big leap. I would definitely take a rx6800xt or rtx3080 upwards. then you will probably be in the CPU limit, your board can also handle a 5600XT, or 5800XT. it also depends on the settings you have
I am in the same boat.I am currently running an i7 10700k with an RTX2060super 1440p ultrawide and I know for sure anything higher than a 3070 will give me a big boost. Not spending 1400$ on a 3070ti.
I cant see much benefit from an upgrade, your system is well specified. I run a 5800X, and you might consider that if you feel CPU bound. I run one along with 32GB og RAM on a gigigabyte Aourus elite, 2TB NVME, and an Eagle 3080TI, I built the system soley for MSFS and I run in Ultra right across the board. I got lucky and got the card for MSRP. It cost, buut it’s an awesome machine.
