What to do if installing patch 1.9.3.0 is not possible?

Hello,

The first idea in this case is to ask for a refund even if I don’t like this no-solution (I think it will be very difficult from an administrative point of view).

Another idea is to completely uninstall the simulator and to install it again from the DVDs. In this case what is the update which will be proposed (1.7.14.0, 1.8.3.0, 1.9.3.0, …) ?. I refuse to begin again to lose time and energy if it is needed to go through all these steps.

Perhaps some comments.
Sincerely

Really can’t imagine,

what they answered to you via Zendesk, or you asked them about your issue?

Did you install the packages to the default location or an alternate location? It sounds like a reinstall is required. You might want to move all your packages to an alternate location before the uninstall, then during reinstall point the installer to that alternate location…that should save you from having to reinstall that 100GB of data,

What exactly do you mean with “What to do if installing patch 1.9.3.0 is not possible?”

you are not allowed (for whatever reason, e.g. limits) to download?
download does not work (looping)?
What steps did you already try?

Hello,
Thank you for comments. Two zendesk tickets are opened about 1) looping problems (I’m not alone in this case) and 2) a collateral modification of the D architecture where the sim is located (I have corrected this point but I have yet no answer from support).

I made many tries for downloading 1.9.3.0 patch, each of them after having a look on different solutions proposed in the forum. Yesterday I followed zendesk instructions (disable window auto-tuning) and the result was the same as before (download of about 1.5 GB, restart from 0, …). I tried again this morning and again the problem …

The initial installation from DVDs was made on disk D.
It is why now I don’t know what to do.
Sincerely

Well the only thing which solved the download-loop issue was limiting the bandwitth for the download. All other ‘solutions’ did not help (…me).

But I guess you already tried that.

Hopefully you get it sorted.

Hello,
Limitation of bandwidth is useless in my case because my internet connection is lower than 5 Mbps. It’s why I’m not optimist for the future of MSFS in my configuration even if my laptop is not so bad (ALW) : in Off line mode the sim is running at about 30 fps. Then before having fiber I will continue with P3Dv5 and XP11.50.
Sincerely

Hello,
At the moment I have opened 9 tickets at zendesk. 5 of them are marked as solved but I saw it was true only for 2. I was expecting answers with more explanations but in fact most of times I got a nice mail with “thank you for submitting”.

My main concern now is to know if there is a chance to finish this downloading if I don’t stop the process (download, restart from 0, download, restart from 0, …). Going out of the loop seems possible as downloaded size is increasing before each restart. I’m not completely sure of this and I hesitate a lot because of potential damages caused by high temperature during too long time.

Thank you for your advice.
Sincerely

It sounds like your internet speed is kinda slooooowww…

I bet if you had faster internet your download problem would be solved.

I think internet speed is important for this game and getting updates.

If the game can’t restore its repository of files, or alter it while applying patches, it could means your D folder have remaining permission issues.

I think if I was you I will first check for NTFS issues with a simple chkdsk and correct any errors, then I will restore the default permission chain from the D drive to the folder where Flight Simulator stores the files it downloads.

My game is installed from the Windows 10 store, but my files have been relocated during the installation to C:\Games\Flight Simulator when the game asked where to store game files, so a bit like yours, maybe.

No other permissions were applied to this folder or to the Games folder, permissions inheritance is enabled on Games and on any subfolder (including Flight Simulator).

Finally, \Games\Flight Simulator folder is owned by the Administrators group.
To restore default permissions on this folder, try this (run in an Administrator Command Prompt) :
icacls "C:\Games\Flight Simulator" /reset /t /c /l

In addition to that, you have two choices: take ownership, or restore ownership to Administrators group (like mine).
To take ownership : takeown /F "C:\Games\Flight Simulator" /R
To give the Administrators group ownership : takeown /F "C:\Games\Flight Simulator" /R /A

Don’t execute this on the root drive, the root drive should be own by TrustedInstaller user.

It should give your user (which is also the identity of the game process) enough permission to do anything with the game files. Let’s hope it will allow the game to download and applies latest patch.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your detailed explanations. I know that most of my problems are coming from my low internet connection. I’m waiting fiber for the end of the year since two years now. Let’s hope for this year.
Before this it’s very kind of you to explain what could improve the situation. As I’m not a specialist I’m a little bit anxious to enter in the system.

I did the verification with “chkdsk” on C:\ and D:. No problems were found and disk D:\ is optimized.
Concerning the “icacls” command is it right and sufficient to enter the following line in the administrator terminal
icacls D:\user_name\Official /reset /t /c /l
takeown /F D:\user_name\Official /R /A

Again thank you.
Best regards

PS 8 hours later
I did all what you suggested and success was mentioned in “admin” terminal. But it was the only success as I got the same problem as before (starting from 0 at about 1.5 GB downloaded).
The only thing I can do now is to wait for fiber and run MSFS in OFF line mode. Fortunately I still have others sims.

I also have been surprised that the GPU charge was now lower than 40 % during most of partial downloading time. When downloading 1.8.3.0 I remember this GPU charge was greater than 95 %.

Check if by any chance you enabled bandwidth limitation in the options data tab. If so - disable it. Go access the options - start the sim with network disabled to skip the update. Change the option, restart the sim with network enabled and check if you will be able to download the update (if you really want it).

Hello,
Thank you for comment. With an internet speed lower than 5 Mbps this option is useless for me. Now I use the sim in off line mode and hope a correction of the download process …
Best regards

I also have 5Mbps Internet, so I enabled the bandwidth limitation option in the sim to avoid using all the badwitch when flying. This caused update download restarts, so I disabled this option and the update download issues vanished.
You can still fly on-line without the update, just disable Ethernet when starting the sim and enable it again when in the main menu.

Hello,
I also enabled the bandwidth limitation but the problem remains the same : restart from 0 after about 1.5 GB downloaded. I also have disabled this limitation with the same result. Because of the long time needed for downloading (about 1 GB/h) I did not try to let the restart from 0 occurs more than 3 times and I don’t know if it will finish when continuing as the download is always blocked at around 1.5 GB.

Well if he is anything like me, he doesn’t have an option for better internet. Not everyone lives or wishes to live in a big city where you can just pick and choose what kind of internet you want. Where I live I get three choices - satellite, cellular (meaning a mobile hotspot), or nothing. That is it. Not even dsl out here in this area.

Even so I have to use Netlimiter set to maximum of 600 KB/s which roughly translates to 4.8 mbps even though my connection is even faster than that. I just sit there and loop if I try to let it run any faster. And i tested the download on both my satellite and cellular connections. Asobo just designed and incredibly crappy launcher/updater system. No other game updater out there has these problems with being able to download and apply new patches.
