What we do while flying

Good to hear you got your HAM license. There are several B737 pilots on air with “their HAM callsign”/aeronautical mobile on HF bands - USB only - when their workload permits it of course, so interesting to listen out for or google it. Interestingly, not all countries allow /aeronautical mobile operations, so when flying over certain countries no transmissions!

2 hours or less I will sit there, make make a drink or snack, watch a TV show with the wife. If it is a long one, say 3-4 hours plus, I will exercise if it is an airliner that I can leave on AP.

On Long Hauls like 10+ Hours, press ups every hour, watch TV, Chores, go out even and monitor on my phone.

I will never:
Pause
Save a flight mid way

If I have to pause a flight like something I have to do and it is a critical flight phase, I will just scrap the flight, to me and I dont mean its bad but to me Time Compression and pausing the sim just kills it for me.

I’ve been flying only rotor-wing for the last couple of years. That doesn’t allow for inattention. A couple of minutes of distraction and you’ll find the aircraft has become a post-hole digger.

Turn on the biggest fan available so my GPU doesn’t cook me (very immersive if flying in a hot region), whilst checking my wife isn’t sitting in the dark due to the massive power draw !!

I just fly GA and explore the geography of places I’ve been or want to visit. Sometimes I get low and fast in some narrow canyon in Utah, or go bush whacking in the mountains of New Guinea or Alaska. I never have a reason to watch a video, or do anything else while I’m in MSFS as I’m engrossed in the experience. I can’t afford to fly anymore for real so this is as good as it gets and I’m happy.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to add: where else can fly my Vans RV 14 down the Las Vegas strip, on the deck without losing my license to the FAA?

It’s one of those games where you can get away with playing another game at the same time - so long as it doesn’t require any GPU resources - they’re gone!

Here is another example of a flight that brought me over what I thought was in interesting place.
Certainly the name was.
Bella Coola in Canada. I was intrigued by the name.
So I had a look and found this amazing place.
So dont just fly over places, find out about them. It is fun.

I think I want to go there now on my next vacation.

Pause to help my wife asking for help irl…
Try to understand the destination airport charts… Reread the checklist because I forgot to check the climb checklist…
Sim rate X4 because dinner is ready soon…

I monitor the pilot flying, take care of navigation, communications and other duties as needed.
Oh, and I answer any needs of the wife… which , sometimes, is Too Often and interferes with my flight… smile

I also listen to music. :man_facepalming:

I have never used an autopilot so when I am flying…I fly - is that wrong?

Oh please, you’re preaching to the choir here. More people here make fun of people using AP than the other way around, just read this thread for example. Forums attract more hardcore simmers than, say, Reddit or Discord.

Apologies, I think my self-deprecating British humour and poor use of emojis meant things got a bit lost there…

Ah, my bad, that totally sounded different on my radar. One of the huge disadvantages of forums!
