What's happening to PMDG?

Today I decided to wander over to the PMDG website to see, (and drool) over their interesting aircraft.

I got there, went to the products tab, and saw three, count 'em, THREE aircraft - the DC-6 I already have, a 737 and a 777.  That’s it.  Period.

My jaw dropped.

Most aircraft dev’s have dozens of aircraft to sell.  Now I understand that PMDG develops aircraft with incredible levels of detail so they won’t release aircraft nearly so often - but three?  That’s unbelievable!

Does anyone know anything about what’s going on over there?  Should I grab the other two before they fade into the sunset?

This is a curious post.

They just released the 777-200ER for both 2020 and 2024 — their first native 2024 aircraft.

The other 777s are coming to 2024 quite soon and the DC-6’s 2024 compatibility is being wrapped up now.

They are fully into the 747 series development.

They have just finished a simulator collaboration with Boeing.

Their 737 series will be updated for 2024, but that isn’t scheduled yet.

They are alive and well and doing their thing with their usual methodology.

Whew!

That’s nice to know.  When I saw those three lonely aircraft sitting there, I was worried.

A drool-fest if I’ve ever heard one.

They are seriously solid and are fully behind the MSFS franchise and committed to 2024.

I really appreciate their commitment to excellence, even if it means waiting for product to be done.

I’m tired of this early access, shove it out there and fix it on-the-fly development process so many others have adopted. No, thank you.

Preach it brother!  Preach it!

Even with the DC-6, there were a few glitches when I bought it, (some surfaces weren’t finished yet), but they were fully transparent about it, admitted the goof, and promised a fix within a reasonable time frame.

I don’t know about the other two aircraft, but the thing that really sold me on the DC-6 were the YouTube videos on how to effectively fly it.  Not only amazing, but jaw-dropping support.

Sorry for the scare, but that empty looking catalog gave me a few more grey hairs.

When I was in software QA before I retired, we had a name for that:  “Throw it against the wall and see if it sticks.”  Trust me, I made LOTS of friends when I’d push-back against a release that was (generously called), half-baked.  I was lucky that I had a boss that was both far enough up the food-chain to be taken seriously and willing to listen to legitimate gripes about the software.

I am not much of an airliner pilot (other than vintage), but I bought the 772 for 2024 and, wow, it is seriously impressive and I’m happy to support them financially, given how much I appreciate their approach to development.

I’ve only done one flight with it, but I am super excited to really learn it and to fly it again.

I’m also dying for that early 747!

P.S.
Your avatar is a hoot!

With my flying skills, I can just imagine my check-ride instructor looking like that.

I do the same with rkbridger, as his scenery is top-notch. I’m tempted to buy the other aircraft - not that I’ll ever fly them - but just to “keep my hand in” and support their development efforts.

Their website is a bit oddly constructed. The “products” tab is more of a featured items tab, it appears. If you go to the “MSFS 2020” tab, you’ll see all 8 of the available products. (But only one, of course, on the 2024 tab…)

Answered your own question right there.

Well, having three ‘active’ aircraft is actually pretty good for PMDG and about average over our last 20+ years! We favor dept and quality over quantity. We are a small team by choice and it takes years to develop a product.

It’s hard to believe, but we now have someone trying to make an argument for quantity over quality

If you don’t count variants, this is very common in the airliner space. Fenix has essentially one aircraft with 3 variants, iniBuilds has 6, but really only 2 if you’re counting airliners, TFDi and Leonardo each have one (1). Airliner development is a quality over quantity game. The only airliner devs out there with “many”’aircraft are the likes of Captain Sim and LVFR, and you get what you get with those.

In fact, I believe if you count unique variants/SKUs, PMDG has more airliners available in MSFS than any other two airliner developers combined (not including arcade-style developers like LVFR and Captain Sim).

MIght be true, in fact…

I did the same, saw the same and even thought the same. Happy to see this has been cleared up by NixonRedgrave

No.

I just wondered why there were so few.

It turns out that the reason is twofold:

  1. The aircraft are somewhere else on their site.
  2. I was (inadvertently) comparing them to other sites, (like GotFriends), that have dozens.

IMO you won’t find a better flying or more realistic airliner sim model. It hand flies so well out of the box without hours of flight hardware tweaks.

I have the DC-6, 737 and the 777 for both MSFS 2020 and 2024 and am happy that all models have impressed me.

Glad to hear. Say, were you ever able to get your thrust reverser binding working? And if so, did you change the title of you post accordingly? Just wondering since you are a fan. Cheers!

A dropped jaw and drool. Reminds me of my grandfather taking a nap after Christmas lunch.
