They certainly work. When I was in the army, we worked with helicopters a lot. We often had to attach a load to the hook of a helicopter that was hovering. We trained with Wessexes and we had to earth the hook before touching it or it could be fatal. When the RAF got Pumas, they were fitted with dischargers on the rotor blades and we didn’t have to bother.
