What's your addons folder structure?

After two years my addons folder grew to a behemoth and I’m trying to structure it the best way possible. I also keep the downloaded zips in a backup folder with the same structure in case I lose my install. It eats a lot of space, but I feel it’s still better than having to download everything again.

So what’s everybody’s method? How do you structure your addons and keep it neat and tidy?

This is what mine currently looks like. Please note, that this folder structure is outside of the community folder and that I’m using AddonLinker to only import the regions I’m currently flying in. I have a base profile in AddonLinker that imports the things that are global to all regions (e.g. my 3rd party airplanes, avionics etc.)

  • Airplanes: 3rd party airplanes
  • Asset Libraries: daveslibrary, mikeaatmaster library etc.
  • Avionics: TDS gtnxi, kap140 etc.
  • Cameras: I modified the default camera positions of all my planes and created personal mods, so that future updates don’t override these
  • Checklists: Some in-game checklists that I downloaded from flightsim
  • Liveries: I’ve created subfolders for every plane that have custom liveries (from flightsim)
  • POI: bushtalkradio, and some POI for UK, europe, US that I downloaded
  • Airport enhancements: some global things like SimpleTraffic, REX airport textures etc.
  • Scenerey enhancements (don’t mind the typo): mamudesigns addons, we love vfr, gaist, seafront, FSbirds etc.
  • Regions: I’ve created subfolders for different regions I often fly in that contain all the custom airports and landmark addons
  • Seasons: contains Bijans season mod but I’m not using that anymore
  • Utilities: stuff like shiftzstats, toolbar pushback etc.

I’m not keeping old installs. My whole system is backed up daily so in case I lose something, there’s always a way to get it back.

I’m looking forward to what others are doing with their addons folder structure.

Interesting. I’m struggling with the backup, especially because of the lack of space I have. I would be curious to see backup solutions that would let me delete the downloaded zips.
It’s also curious, I keep a separate Airports/Regions/Countries folder structure and a Sceneries/Regions/Countries structure, because I have a bunch of photogrammetry addons. I think I still haven’t figured out the most optimal structure

I have more than 2000 addons in my folder and everything is activated in AddonLinker.
Back up? No,not yet.

I just have everything in there, no addon linker, toss it in and go.

I keep a categorized spreadsheet of every add on, where to get it, Payware / freeware and current version number.

Everything in green has been uploaded to my Amazon S3 FTP for backup which includes Current Version plus obsolete (previous versions) if I ever want to rollback. Anything in red, needs to be updated on the FTP.

I have pretty similar to yours.
Top level:

  • Aircraft Library
    — Main Hangar
    — Storage Hangar (less used or unused planes)
  • Airports Library
    — Country / Regions folders
  • Scenery Library
    — Country / Regions folders
  • Liveries Library
    — Plane name folders
  • Utilities Library
    — Cameras
    — PMS50
    — Bush Trips
    Etc etc
  • Aircraft Enhancement Mods
—- Plane name folders or loose in here
  • Global Mods
  • Photogrammetry

I’m thinking a better way would be to have airports, PG and scenery grouped like below instead, so switching regions on and off is easier but you could still exclude scenery parts with one click. And means you only need to manage one countries / regions folder structure! Just haven’t got around to doing it yet:

  • World Library
    — Europe
    —— Austria
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    —— Belgium
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    Etc etc
    — Americas
    —— North America
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    —— South America
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    —— Bahamas & Caribbean
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    Etc etc
    — Australasia
    —— Australia
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    —— New Zealand
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    —— Japan
    ——— Airports
    ——— Scenery
    ——— Photogrammetry
    Etc etc

Break it down into each continent / country once basically.

I was considering something like that (primarily sorting by region and not type) so I don’t have to duplicate the region structure, but sometimes you really just need the airports…
I’m sorting the liveries by airplane type. I saw someone sorting liveries by continent, but that doesn’t seem like a convenient solution.
I spent a day trying to optimize it and this is as far as I got:
