i turned the anti ice aid off so that it will affect my plane alot, just wondering when i need to use this and whether it needs to be kept on during certain conditions or just turned on now and then. example if im at -51 sat does it need to be on and kept on ?
It really depends on moisture in the air. I watch my windows and wing leading edges.(TBM 930) the anti ice system is very quick, Conversely in the King Air it really does not work at all. Or didnt last time I flew it. If passing through cloud layers in sub zero temps… use it
1 - Icing conditions exist when the OAT on the ground or in flight is + 5°C or below,
and visible moisture in any form is present (clouds, fogwith visibility of one mile
(1.6 km) or less, rain, snow, sleet or ice crystals).
2 - Icing conditions also exist when the OAT on the ground is + 5°C or below and
when operating on ramps, taxiways or runways where surface snow, ice,
standing water or slush may be ingested by the engine or freeze on engine or
cowlings.
Not my wisdom, this is directly from a TBM930 POH. There’s a whole section within the normal procedures dealing with the anti ice system. Basically it says to turn all systems ON when OAT is <5°C before entering IMC or when operating in IMC. In VMC it comes down to observing ice accumulating on the window and/or leading edge of the left wing, in darkness there’s an ice light to do that.
