Is Sim update 17 still to release. It is mid-August?
There has been no announcement yet on the specific start date of SU17 beta.
Generally, the notification in Official Microsoft Flight Simulator > News & Announcements is only made when SU17 is made publicly available. The current roadmap shows September for SU17.

I take it, the screenshot above for the roadmap, is the FS2024 one, not 2020?
I say this as World Update 22 is shown and we FS2020 users did not have this.
Yeah I have trouble throwing money away, great that 2024 brings happiness to everyone, but 2020 is cool for me.
The roadmap covers both sims, which is why SU17 for MSFS 2020 is on it. It seems like whether or not specific 1st party releases (World Updates, City Updates, Local Legends, Famous Flyers, and Expert Series products) will come to 2024 or both sims isn’t always known or publicly available until release, so that’s why they’re on the roadmap without calling out specific sim compatibility.
With people are having issues with PS5 and Xbox I expect SU17 will be delayed once again.
Well we have now waited over a year for su17, hoping that Asobo even sees any feedback we give in the many sad days since. Soon we will know once and for all if what they did in su16 to the once great 2020 sim was intentional or accidental.
Based on their upcoming actions in su17, and whether it reverts any restricts Asobo made in su16 for aerial resolution, zoom level, lod etc, each of us can make our peace or not with what the future holds overall for MSFS.

Do they roll out some “preview update” (Beta) of MSFS 2020 SU17 before the release rollout?
Or happens this for MSFS 2024 SU only?
Sim Updates have traditionally gone through extensive public beta periods for both MSFS (2020) and MSFS 2024.
So as the first public beta of SU 7 arrives, we will know about SU 7 isn’t far
(and vice versa: no beta, no SU 7 
)
To be clear, this thread is about SU 17 for MSFS (2020) - not the (also impending) SU 7 for MSFS 2024. But yeah, the release of the beta typically means the final release is coming “soon” - though betas could be several months long, depending on their scope and the amount/severity of regressions that pop up along the way.
