Who invented the first flight sim?

Hi there, I was wondering who invented the first flight sim? I hope this post is ok to post.

The earliest I remember is SubLogic but there may be others

You didn’t asked for software flight simulators specifically. In this case I believe the first one with records is Leonardo Da Vinci

Otherwise most likely it is the Sublogic one.

Sorry that’s what I meant to ask is the software.

Nova Logic not the earliest but is was a DOS helicopter sim.
There was another I saw which was a DOT matrix flight sim called 1941 (I think), was when screens were 8 bit grayscale. That was the first PC I ever saw and the reason I got into PC gaming. Must of been around 82’ or 83".

The earliest I can remember for home computers was by Digital Integration and was called Tomahawk and was an AH-64 Apache in wireframe that you could fly with a keyboard or Kempston joystick.

I still have mine!

That is so awesome. No ground spikes and you can see everything.

Depends what you mean by a flight sim. The first flight simulator that was designed to help to teach pilots was actually a mechanical apparatus - called a Link Trainer. It was built in the late 1920’s. Of course, it did not have any graphics but it was only a simulated set of flight controls that were attached to a mock airplane, that responded to the controller movement.

But yeah, as others have pointed out, the first home computer flight simulator was probably subLogic’s (Bruce Artwick’s company) Flight Simulator, the precursor to Microsoft’s long running series.

Years ago, I used to have a computer called the Timex Sinclair. To purchase a 16K RAM add-on pack was a big deal. It could be “loaded” from a cassette tape. The pixels were huge and the effort was extreme. But I was intrigued ever since.

Here’s the link from YouTube:

I’m not sure… but my first flight sim was on a commodore 64, with a crappy joystick…
It must have been late 80’s
Look at where we are nowadays… and there are folks who are freaking about the grayscale of clouds, and that some cockpit buttons/levers/switches that are still inop…
Big fun to see, as a veteran.

I guess you could say he was kind of the John Carmack of flight simulators.

Have you downloaded the C64 emulator and tried FS? I’ve only done it with Elite Frontier. Brings back great memories!
