Why are there multiple ATIS frequencies on an airport?

First, are there multiple ATIS frequencies on real world airports. Second, if so, why?

Here in Canada I have tuned an ATIS frequency and the broadcast was in French so had to tune another which was in English. Not sure if that may be an explanation for multiple ATIS frequencies in other countries.

Some airports have a departure and arrival ATIS.

Example…

Departure on 135.925…

DFW DEP INFO C 0053Z. 20004KT 10SM SCT100 SCT250 28/21 A3001 (THREE ZERO ZERO ONE). SIMUL PARL TRAFFIC DEPG RWYS 17R, 18L. NOTAMS… HAZD WX FOR DFW AVBL ON FSS. BIRD ACTIVITY VCNTY ARPT. …ADVS YOU HAVE INFO C.

Arrival on 123.775…

DFW ARR INFO B 0053Z. 20004KT 10SM SCT100 SCT250 28/21 A3001 (THREE ZERO ZERO ONE). SIMUL VISUAL APCH TO RWYS, 13R, 18R, 17C, 17L. Per the CFI Notebook…

  • Some airports broadcast two streams, an arrival and departure ATIS:
    • Arrival ATIS transmissions on a discrete VHF radio frequency are engineered according to the individual facility requirements, which would normally be a protected service volume of 20 NM to 60 NM from the ATIS site and a maximum altitude of 25,000’ AGL
    • In the case of a departure ATIS, the protected service volume cannot exceed 5 NM and 100’ AGL

Also, I know DFW has dual ATIS freqs (123.775 and 135.925).

Some airports, in rare cases, will even broadcast ATIS over the voice portion of a VOR frequency. An example of this is at Teterboro (KTEB). I assume that is because of the frequency congestion in the area and flat terrain. The primary ATIS at KTEB is 132.85, which is also shared with Potomac Approach in Virginia. The secondary ATIS frequency can be heard over 114.2 (BWZ VOR).
