Why do we make regional airport mods?

Hi, I’m just trying to wrap my head around community mods for the game. Why do people create airports for this game? Is it because the ones that come with the game aren’t fleshed out? It’s a silly question, I know. I just want to hear from modders why they do it.

For instance; I used to live in Miramar, FL. When I got the game I immediately loaded into that airport. The airport was very lacking with activity so I was somewhat disappointed. At this point do I go ahead and create an airport mod for KHWO - North Perry Airport | SkyVector? Will the developers of Flight Sim ever take my mod and add it to the game? What’s the purpose of it all!!!?! Thanks.

The default non-handcrafted airports are auto generated and generally bear no relation to the real thing. So people develop more realistic add-ons to replace the default auto-generated airports. Some add-ons are free (see flightsim.to), while others are pay-ware. One can incorporate the add-ons into the simulator by copying them to the community folder.

If you want a better, more realistic KHWO then yes, one option would be to make it yourself. If you want to share it, you can upload it to various freeware mod sites (such as the aforementioned flightsim.to). If you want to sell it, you can look into getting into one or more of the pay-ware marketplaces or roll your own e-commerce site.

I love regional airports and you’ve got to get out of the city and into the country more because it’s more fun out there and entertaining big cities actually bore me so it’s exiting to check out the different smaller towns and townships

I had the exact same question when I bought MSFS in Decemeber when they released the VR compatible update. I was thinking the airports would be the least important part of the flight, and I wondered why they didn’t spend time doing scenery and city packs instead, like the sites you spend time flying to rather than the places you take off and land.

6 months on though and I can certainly see why airports are so popular.
Firstly, the more you get into simming, the more time you spend in them. If you play realistically, and go through all the pre flight checks, startup checks, ATC requests etc the first 10 - 15 minutes are going to be spent at the airport so you’ll be seeing it up real close. If it’s a local airport, and a popular starting base, you’ll be there a lot. If you’re also doing full landings, taxiing back to parking and shutting down the plane you’ll spend a few minutes at the other end as well. So a fair chunk of the flying experience takes place at airports, and being all at ground level you really notice the extra details of custom built airports.

Secondly, if like me you start to get into the hobby, you’ll probably find yourself looking at Youtube to see the airports in real life, and it’s just so much more satisfying to see your MSFS version accurately represent the real thing, even down to local cafes, peculiar buildings and monuments etc. I imagine for real pilots who sim, an airport they visit in real life that didn’t correspend to reality in the sim would be utterly immersion breaking.

I have found that now only fly to and from hand made airports from now on. They are just so much more satisfying. You don’t have to buy them. I’ve only purchased one airport mod so far, and downloaded the rest from Flightsim.to for free.

In my local county of Devon, and its neigbouring Cornwall, a community modder called Superspud has expertly recreated Exeter, Newquay, Salcombe, Lands End (Althought Asobso have done a great one here to) and the Scilly Isles and they are all so well done that it’s just a pleasure to fly to them all.

I’ve found Youtube channels from hobbyists who sly from these airfields. For example there is a Youtube Channel called Gull Perch Flyer where a guy from Salcombe airfield records flights and little historical flying visits and I love watching them and seeing just how closely Superspud’s mod matches the real thing. It’s like I’ve been there, even though I haven’t.

The one airfield I have bought so far is Perranporth from the Just Flight wesbite. It’s a lovely former RAF World War 2 airfield on the cliffs on Cornwal that makes for a great place to start and end flights. It has a war memorial there, a rather quirky terminal building and a bunch of extra details, like a caravan park, tyres to mark the runway barriers, and static people populating the place.

For less than £10 it’s been great value as I’ve flown to and from there over a dozen times now. I’ll likely only pay for airports that are fairly local to me, or areas that I intend to use a bases for many flights. For places I might see only a couple times I’d grab a free one from flightsim.to, as they are all done to a high standard.

In summary though, I have to say airport mods are really important to me now for improving the overall flight experience, especially if you start from cold and dark and then taxi to shutdown at the end. At Salcombe I literally drive my plane into the hanger to shut down, and start from there again when I take-off!

I like that I don’t have to taxi as far. KAGC is closer to me irl than KPIT.

The beautiful 30’s art deco terminal at KAGC is just a autogen box with a tower sticking out in sim.

I also don’t fly anything bigger than the CRJ.

The daffy thing about the sim is that the world in general is impressively faithful to real life… apart from the airports.

You take off from some weird, smeary blank places and then immediately return to the real world once you’re beyond the airport. That’s a bit jarring.

Some autogen airports are surprisingly good. Many are dire.

Wow, what a mouthful. Thank you for sharing your perspective. I’m really digging the flight sim experience so I try to do cold starts and land/taxi. So; I can agree that the airports are beginning to grow on me. I guess I can think of doing this mod as a labor of love then.

As a consumer of local and regional airport mods I have exactly one demand: accurate taxiway labeling.

I use an iPad with ForeFlight as an external flight planning tool & in-flight helper, and the airport diagrams are a lifesaver for figuring out taxi directions. Most small airports, unfortunately, have scrambled the taxiways – alpha will be bravo, or echo will be juliet. If flying on AI ATC, the provided taxi directions won’t match the map, so you have to look for the little signs and figure out which one’s really which.

Customized airports with correct taxiways save a lot of annoyance and make the experience more immersive and realistic.

Ha sorry for the essay, I write quickly, in an unbroken stream of consciousness!

Well if you’re crafting your own, and it happens to be somebody’s local aiport you might well be contributing to their sim experience in the same way as Superspud contributes to mine.
It doesn’t even need to be major ones, Salcombe and Perranporth are two of my favorites to fly to precisely because they are so small and relatively insignificant, yet somebody has take the time to recreate them in detail, because they matter to a handful of locals.

I’m hoping that a future scenery/airport gateway will allow the community to fix and enhance airports that will make it back in game.

If I was not up to my eyeballs in work, family, and house responsibilities I’d like to take a stab at learning Blender well enough to model the terminal at KAGC and creating an enhancement or replacement mod.

Sigh…maybe next year.

There seem to be two types of airport mods:

  • airports targeting mainly locals who are familiar with the real thing and find the default airport disappointing and immersion breaking
  • destinations a lot of people are going to just fly from a lot, some of the Caribbean airports for example

I suppose there is a third category, airports addons where the main features is Easter Eggs that bring the game to life. Examples of this include the (non animated) French dairy cows and hot air balloons at Redwings LFKL, the animated beach people at both FSDreamtime LFEQ (depending on weather) and the Airworthy Designs TNCM and the hang gliding people at Geardowns SBGV.
