Why is my GPU so BUSY when just setting at this MENU?

Why is my GPU Burning with Processing Work (97.5%) while displaying a Main Menu ???

Hello there,
We ask that all members not use General Discussion for help, troubleshooting, bug reports, or advice questions. Your topic has been moved to Community Support.

Because they havenā€™t put a frame cap on the Menu screens. You have to do it yourself by setting, for example, the Max Framerate in your control panel.

Didnā€™t they add a setting a few updates ago to lower usage in menus? You have to enable it.

Sorry, I always forget thatā€¦

Iā€™ll take a look at frame caps and that setting to reduce GPU usage while in a menu. I thought they added something a few updates ago alsoā€¦ Thanks for the tips and reminders !

What in the world is that GPU being tasked to do while setting at a general menu ?

Nothing special, only simple things, and thatā€™s the problemā€¦
If you donā€™t set any limiter youā€™re asking to your computer to run at its fastest possible speed. Menus are simple to manage and display, so your computer can refresh it at a very high frame rate, probably several hundred fps per second (check it and youā€™ll see), and your components are overused obviously. This is true for any kind of game loop. No limit = 100% GPU (100% CPU is nearly impossible managing just menus), so what you saw is expected.
Edit: I think for long than Devs should force a vsync or fps limit during menus, even if the user didnā€™t set any limiter. What happen during fly is the user responsibility as he set what he want (even if educate them is sometimes needed). Should not be true during menu.

Thanksā€¦ Appreciate your comments and thoughts about my runaway GPU.

Glad to see this topic. I have the same issue and it drives me nuts. Thankfully my GPU isnā€™t overheating (around 65Ā°C) while itā€™s running at 95% load, but the fans are cranking and itā€™s producing a lot heat.

Iā€™ve never wanted to impose an FPS rate cap - I like flying at 100 FPS - but maybe Iā€™ll try capping it at 60 and see if that ā€˜cools downā€™ my GPU some.

Where can I find that setting? I know I can do it in the nVidia control panel. But ideally Iā€™d like to keep unlimited FPS while flying, and cap it in the menu screens.

@snowdropchi
Thank you!

Amenā€¦ Thank youā€¦ I had forgotten about that settingā€¦
Many Thanks !

OH Geeā€¦I think I spoke to soon.
I already had Low Power Mode selected ON and my GPU usage at this menu is 95.5% - 99.3 %.
This is a ā€œStaticā€ menu so what in the world is the GPU doing ???
ā€¦Other than getting HOT for no reason, processing Nothing !

The first thing Iā€™ll do when I get home from work today is test my system.
(Well, maybe not the ā€˜firstā€™ thingā€¦) :smirk:

Looking forward to your reply.
I cannot imagine why our GPUā€™s have to be processing the same thing over and over while in a static menu like this. In the menu I am displaying, our GPU usage , under ā€œNormalā€ conditions, should go to near ZERO. Are they deliberately trying to burn out my GPU so I will have to buy anotherā€¦ Maybe they are targeting our lower end GPUā€™s so they can change the MSFS Specsā€¦ ?? Smile

Indeed.

Iā€™ve got an RTX 3090 Ti 24GB - Itā€™s no slouch. No way it should be working that hard in the menus.

Not limiting the fps is like having your car stopped with the engine running, and pressing the accelerator hard without gear engaged. The result is normal and expected. The fewer things to manage, like a simple menu, the faster the system will run. Everyone does what they want but I limit myself to avoid overheating and engine breakage;)

Isnā€™t the plane in your hangar being rendered invisibly behind everything? Thatā€™s what i thought anyway.

Open Task Manager window
What is the GPU usage when Experimental Low Power Mode is on and also when it is off.

For example mine is:
GPU usage when Experimental Low Power Mode is on: 53.9%
GPU usage when Experimental Low Power Mode is off: 97.1%

Huge difference.

If there is no change then there maybe something else that is causing your issue.

I used GPU-Z to get GPU load and power info.
Best result in the menu screen was when Experimental Low Power mode was ON, nVidia CP power set to normal, and Windows power plan set to balanced. I going to leave ELP ON, but set nVidia and Windows power back to the highest performance settings. My GPU is working hard when flying, and I may need to change things (especially by setting a frame rate limit) when I start using my VR headset.

No frame rate limit. Iā€™m going to set it to 60 FPS and rerun these tests.
Like @CodeLoran69 said, constantly revving the GPU engine canā€™t be good for it long-term.
Plus, summer is coming, and I donā€™t need the computer fighting the central A/C.

My default settings
In Menu
HDR ON. DX11. 2K mode. DLSS-DLAA
Experimental Low Power = OFF
nVidia Power = High Performance
Windows Power = Maximum Performance
GPU Load = 95%
GPU Power = 405.6 W

Experimental Low Power = ON
nVidia Power = High Performance
Windows Power = Maximum Performance
GPU Load = 76%
GPU Power = 332.4 W

Big difference.

Experimental Low Power = ON
nVidia Power = Normal
Windows Power = Balanced
GPU Load = 70%
GPU Power = 310.1 W

Small improvement compared to the above. Still significant.
