Why is the sun so dull when viewed from inside the cockpit?

So, from inside the cockpit it is just a bright circle:

The sun is much better from the outside:

Do I need to tweak some settings in order to make it look more realistic from inside the cockpit?

Do you have Bloom turned on?

They may have something turned off as I have that star pattern, as well as the unrealistic lens flare effects. I believe I have Bloom, and Motion Blur disabled.

Looks like you have Lens Flare on, you can see some flare across the glare shield below the whiskey compass? As for our OP it looks like he has Bloom turned off.

Yes, and it shouldn’t be seen inside the cockpit, only with one of the external cameras because our eyes don’t have any lens elements for light to bounce between. There may be a bug report about that, but I don’t remember.

Yes, I do.

Hi! Can you please show your graphics settings, sir?

Looks like you’re flying the Justflight Piper Arrow here, does the sun look the same through the windscreen of one of the default airplanes? I’m wondering if this is related to the properties of the glass in that particular aircraft?

Probably not, because I tried it in the Arrow III, and the Warrior 2, and both looked the same. I suspect it’s a graphical setting doing this. When I have a moment I’ll post my settings.

Yes, I tried with one default airplane. Totally same

I use Live Weather virtually exclusively, and can only remember seeing the sun as a plain disc through cloud, is it possibly a weather setting, or do you have a weather addon?

Try turning off lens flare and leaving bloom on and see if that makes a difference.

I generally use Live Weather all the time. No addons related to weather. I suppose the sun problem is something with graphic settings.

I tried that, but the effect is the same. Turning off lens flare means that the sun becomes a flat disk even when viewed from outside cockpit

I noticed that changing antialiasing to TAA improves the sun a bit. It is not a flat disk anymore. However I still don’t see lens flare when inside the cockpit.

I believe that is a new feature they added in FS2024, so that explains it being missing in 2020: Option to disable bloom and lens flare - #2 by Mustang242Sqn and Option to disable bloom and lens flare - #21 by Vibstronium

Everything I’m reading here seems to point to Bloom not working. From what I can tell, Lens Flare doesn’t work inside the cockpit - only outside. But Bloom should be universal. Double-check that it’s on. If it is, try different anti-aliasing settings. If you have a GPU that supports DLSS, try that.

Sorry, I forgot to post my settings. I’ll send an email home so I don’t forget.

I’m 99.9% certain I have Bloom turned off in my settings, but I am using 2024. That said, I always had Bloom disabled in 2020, and would still see the sun stars, and lens flare there too.

I also have the Arrow and see the sun the same inside the cockpit as outside as in your 3rd & 4th pics i.e. all good. In 2024 (SU3) Bloom and Lens Flare settings don’t exist in the 2024 UI but still exist in the .cfg file. BTW I’m using nVidia DLSS for anti-aliasing and DLAA. I guess it must be something in your settings?

That’s what I was thinking. I use 2020.

The actual reason is 2020 version of the sim:)

My apologies, I assumed 2020! BTW I have uninstalled 2020 which is a vote of confidence in 2024!
