Why the performance difference in MSFS Multi Monitor vs. NVIDIA Surround?

I finally have tried out the multi monitor support provide by SU10 and really like the quality and “non stretched” look. I have 3x1080p 24" 144 refresh rate monitors connected and chose 1080p as the resolution within MSFS with DLSS enabled on my RTX 2080 card. I seem to be getting FPS rates of 15 - 29 out of my home airport.

When I switch to NVIDIA Surround at 5760 x 1080 with the same DLSS enabled triple monitor setup I see FPS rates of 45-55.

Just wondering why the big difference between running 3 1920 x 1080 monitors in MSFS multi monitor vs. the 5760 x 1080 in NVIDIA Surround? I would have expected them to provide similar FPS rates.

I really like the quality without the stretching but not sure it’s worth the FPS hit.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

In simple terms with surround Nvidia is effectively rendering 2 scenes (1 + 2 halves) but for the unstretched solution it must render 3 so a lot more calculus involved. I presume the gpu’s architecture simply struggles with any more than the 2 that it already must for VR … There are also cpu considerations and as most folk are pushing their limits already that can only mean a hit to performance too. Of course most gpus can do multiple screens but rendering 2D and rendering 3D are worlds apart in terms of necessary compute power and latency.

It’s three detailed screens rather than one big stretch.
