Will an i7 950 be enough?

Hi all

I have an old ex server PC an i7 950 with 24gb ram

I’m looking to upgrade the GPU to a 1050ti with 4GB and wondering if that setup will run FS2020?

I saw a post where someone was going to use the 990x which is the max CPU I can get on my mobo

If the 950 won’t cut it, do I have to go to the 990x or will something a bit less still be ok?

Thanks

i7 950, released in 2009, 12 years ago!!

Will it run? Possibly but very slow, see the requirements here https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013463459-Minimum-Recommended-and-Ideal-PC-Specifications-for-Microsoft-Flight-Simulator

Also you can give it a try with a 1 month subscription for 1€/$

I wouldn’t run it on any video card with less than 6 Gigs of VRAM. And yes, that processor won’t really cut it, unfortunately.

I have an i7 930 with an 8gig graphics card and i play it fine on mix between high and ultra with 30 to 35 fps

Depends what you are trying to achieve.

It will probably be OK at 1080p with medium/high settings but 4K on Ultra would be a stutter fest.

Try it and see.

Thanks guys yeah unfortunately I just don’t have the funds to upgrade my PC fully at the moment

I am already looking at getting the video card because my current one can’t drive a 4k monitor and not because I want to play FS 2020 but I thought it paid to check now before I get the video card of the 1050ti would cut it or if it would need a better video card

Seems from here it may run but the video card would be better if I got 6 or 8gb vram. That’s kind of good news because I’m getting a new video card anyway so if it just means spending a bit more to get a 6 or an 8 I can do that and don’t need to worry about upgrading the whole Sha bang… Mobo, CPU and ram.

I don’t really mind if I can’t run FS at high settings as I said running it will be a bonus and was not part of my original plan so running at any kind of setting will be sweet

Only issue is I don’t know if a 6gb or an 8gb card will fit into my case, both lengthways and width

Anyway Ive got some hope at least!

New cpus are coming out end of this month. Hopefully there is a price drop on some of the current cpus but that’s not guaranteed.990x is 20% even slower than the recommended i5 8400 in gaming.

Not just VRAM. Get the card with the highest number of cores. They are single fan 6gb 1660s and 1660ti that can fit in mini ATX cases but that’s if you even find those cards @MSRP.

1050ti is meh.I have one in another build and it I had to trade a lot of my settings down to medium or low to get good performance. Maybe you can do that too.

Will it run now? Maybe. Will it run in two or three months after a few more updates? Maybe not. But I hear you… I have an I7-7700k with a GTX 1070. A few years ago I was on the top of the world. Now, I’m just another lower-end setup.

Thanks again guys I don’t have a mini ATX case I have a server case but right next to spare slot next to the video card I have an additional sata card so I’m not sure if the width of the card will fit. Also behind the video card on the mobo is a connector. My current card or 20cm long is clear of this but not sure if a 23cn long card will be.

Unfortunately the 1660s is now out of my price range. My original requirements are for a video card capable of running 4k and da Vinci resolve free edition. If the video card I get can run FS in any manner that’s a bonus

I’m looking at the Radeon rx580 8gb over the 1050ti (if the Radeon will fit) as they are both around the same price

If I get to pick between these two cards which would you recommend? Or is there another card around the same price point that is better?)

Seems the Radeon will be the better especially more VRAM for Davinci Resolve free edition

I have a 980 that runs fine

Update your GPU to the best you can fit in the MOBO

Your RAM may be an issue if you do not have enough

Does your power supply have enough power for a GPU that fits your needs, or even the right connectors? A lot of servers don’t come with large PSUs ready for upgrades like consumer PCs do.

Gaming on server hardware is possible but it’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I would do a quick google search for your specific server and see if anyone has run that combo before, most likely someone has tried it even just for fun.

What case ? I got a Zotac 3070 into my sg13 ITX with no issues. (231.9mm x 141.3mm x 41.5mm / 9.1" x 5.6" x 1.6") it is basically a shortish dual slot card, but a wee bit taller than standard.

Thanks again all. I do have the correct PSU I put in a new one and I’ve for 24gb ram so that’s not an issue

The issue with trying to fit the video card may be length and width but Im going to measure again tonight however another video card issue might be getting one!

I am very confused at the moment as the grx 1050ti is an older card which has been brought back onto the market? Because it seems there’s no new alternative?

What I mean by this is that there is no budget NVIDIA or AMD GPU with 4/8gb except for older 1050ti and Rx580s?

Current video cards with 4 or 8gb in and and NVIDIA are like $500 minimum but the older 1050 and 580 were prices around $240 but most are out of stock and finding a second hand one is not cheap either

I think this is because of the video card shortage? Finding a new 580 8gb is hard because it’s discontinued, I have found stock of the 1050 but I would prefer the 580

Maybe at the moment I just wait. I don’t want to spend $500 on a GPU I’d really like to find a reasonably priced 580 new or second hand

The 580 is more in the same performance and price bracket as the 1060 6GB not the 1050 which was very low end.

The 20xx period equivalent of the 1050ti 4GB is the 1650 4GB. It is maybe 10% faster than 1050ti and comes with super and ti variants which are faster again if you can find one.

In terms of cards of that generation with more memory you are likely looking at something like a 1660 Super 6GB which is slightly ( 15%? 20%? ) faster than a 580 or 1060 6GB.

None of those cards support ray tracing or DLSS of course.

There are rumours of a low end RTX 3050 eventually coming out with RT and DLSS at a budget price .

There is no sign currently of an upgrade to the 1650/1660 line of non ray tracing cards. If they do appear it will not be soon.

I know I can’t run the sim on my Intel Pentium II and Windows 98.

Sure you can, RDP is your friend.

Thanks a lot Edamllamab!

So I can get a new generation card that only has 4gb of memory and it will outperform the older rx850 with 8gb?

So it’s not really about having a GPU with the memory then and more about a better GPU with more cores etc?

Cheers

4K? Not going to happen on your machine. 1080P is likely ok on middle settings.

Looking to have 4k only to drive my 4k monitor and watch 4k videos

Anyway I’m giving up for the moment. A 1650 super looks good but the ones in my price range are not of stock. And there is such a variance in price from $250 - $400

A faster GPU will give you better average FPS. More VRAM will reduce stutters in areas with lots of objects especially at hi res.

It sort of depends what you are doing, if your only flying at 1080 you might get away with less ram.

Be aware that once you see the sim running at 4K (even at low FPS) you might not be happy with 1080 .

1440p can be a good compromise.
