Windows 11 Beta evaluation build 22581, interesting results for CPU performance

I admire your tenacity in sticking with the latest Win11 beta (22581.100), which clearly impacts negatively on MSFS (especially in VR), and I do hope you make progress in reducing stutters. Please continue posting your results as we, and MS, can all learn from your efforts.

Because of these latest update problems I’ve decided that the Win 11 Insider program is not the best choice for MSFS, so I’ve gone back to the previous ‘stable’ version (22000.588) and unsubscribed from the Insider program on my PC that is dedicated to MSFS.

I think you’re almost definitely correct, but having downloaded and installed the thing I thought it was worth a few hours of experimentation, just to see if there is any benefit to be had from it now that I can share.

If I can’t make it work reasonably well for me then I’ll roll the Windows version back and wait for the official release or a further fix.

Well I can’t comment on VR issues with the latest beta but for me it’s working very well as I have already described above.

I run my sim limiting the fps via the nvidia control panel and using the fast sync option from there too.

After the beta install I was able to increase my fps limit by 4fps and my terrain lod (initially to 400 but now dialled back to 300) and still have lower cpu usage than before.
The only stuttering I see now is when taxiing on high detailed airports and I got that before the beta anyway

Just out of interest, are you using DX11 or DX12 in the sim?

Not sure who you are asking but in my case I’m still running DX11.

It was for @XTCQuinn actually, but good to know, thanks

It would appear that some are affected and some are not, even in flat screen 2D. Given the great variety of hardware setups and MSFS software settings I guess that can be expected.

I’m using DX11.

OK, spent a while yesterday trying out lots of different graphics settings, presets, manual tweaks, HAGS on / off and I just couldn’t get it to run smoothly and satisfactorily using the beta build 22581.100 or .200. This last was just released, but doesn’t have any significant changes.

So, I am still in the windows insider program, and on the beta channel. Given the issues discussed above, what is the best way to get rid of the current beta build and revert to the regular current version of Win 11 home?

I’m in exactly the same position…MSFS2020 in VR was a dream before to run…now its unplayable…very disappointing !

Not sure how you get back to pre beta Windows, but have you tried reinstalling your motherboard chipset drivers.?
I had to do that on my system after the beta update .
Might not make any difference to your problems but worth a try if you can’t revert to previous version

I had an issue with the beta few updates ago where the gaming service wasn’t working. Many people experienced that issue. I had to roll back to the previous beta version. All I did was go into settings opted out of insider program. Then in settings went to troubleshoot and rolled back to when windows last worked properly. After that was done I re entered the insider program and all was well. Then updated the windows 11 preview few days later which fixed the gaming services issue. Now I’m up to date.

Issue resolved - it took a little messing around to find the right way to do it, but what crazymaherm noted above did the job. I first opted out of the beta insider option of Win 11, but that doesn’t automatically reverse the beta build from the pc, it only means you go onto the ‘main’ build next time it is updated. So I took the extra step of doing a reset to the previous build, which was really quick and left all my other apps, files and settings untouched.

I did however get some benefit from all the trial and error. Now my cpu and gpu usage are back to c. 30% and 90% respectively, with the settings that I trialled and tweaked over and over yesterday, I’m now getting a solid 59fps in and around Manhattan with absolutely zero stuttering. I’ve tried several different aircraft and approaches today plus a few of the most familiar challenges & discovery flights and all is back to even better than before.

Awesome to hear all is well. Do you fly in VR? Do you have HAGS on or off?

There’s also a cumulative windows 11 22H2 insider preview update available now

I use a 27in 2K/1440p monitor mostly. I have a Quest 2 but I generally prefer to use the monitor. Maybe my 3070 ti isn’t quite up to making the VR experience as good as it can be, but I prefer the smoothness and detail I get in 2D, plus I can keep an eye on the other pc for mails etc…

Ok, yea I jumped from 2080 super to 3080ti last week. Major difference in performance and quality. I mostly fly VR although via the monitor it looks much better since it’s 4K. But the immersion keeps me going back to VR.

I seem to now no longer be linked correctly, so I can’t see the new update.
Under: Windows Update > Windows Insider Programme it now says at the top:

(!) “Your device is set up to get Insider Preview Builds. If you want to change your Insider level, make sure your Microsoft account is registered to the Insider Programme and link to it on this page.”

Which is strange, because my Windows Insider Account email is correctly shown just a couple of lines below, and if I go into my Windows account it says I am registered for the Insider Programme.

The options to change insider settings such as channel, or to switch on and off preview builds are now all greyed / browned out.

It’s kind of annoying that I don’t 100% get what’s going on, but at the same time is probably telling me it’s sensible to leave well alone!

why change something that works?
some people seem to love installing and reinstalling stuff, instead of flying.

Just revert to your previous build version of windows - it’s quick and easy to make the change, then reboot the pc and you’re back to before the trouble started.

That’s odd. You should be in If it says you’re in. Have you tried to check for updates in windows update settings?
