Windsocks at bespoke EDDP point in the wrong direction

 Thank you for using the Bug section, using templates provided will greatly help the team reproducing the issue and ease the process of fixing it.

Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it?

No

Have you disabled/removed all your mods and addons? If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

no relevant addons (only 1 aircraft, but this happens with every aircraft)

Brief description of the issue:

The windsocks at Leipzig/Halle Airport (EDDP) always indicate the opposite direction to that the wind is actually blowing.

Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered:

ICAO or coordinates (DevMode > Debug > Display position)

EDDP, RWY 08R

Detailed steps to reproduce the issue encountered:

A fellow simmer pointed me to the fact that this only happens on the bespoke EDDP airport.
I have no idea how this came onto my Xbox but you must have the bespoke EDDP installed and then choose any runway at EDDP as departure on the world map, listen to ATC and check the direction the windsock is pointing.

PC specs and/or peripheral set up if relevant:

Xbox series X; Honeycomb Alpha XPC and Bravo, Turtle Beach stick and pedals, MIAP Pro 24, USB keyboard and mouse

Build Version # when you first started experiencing this issue:

Can’t say when this startet, I think it was there long before SU15.

yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

below screenshot is taken at runway 26L, windsock is pointing to the opposite direction it should to.
I did not test possible other windsocks on that field but I assume they all need to be checked, they may have the same issue.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

No (although I didn’t use the OP’s method; I adjusted the surface wind manually and saw the windsocks respond to the wind changes as they should)
Yes, when using the bespoke version of the airport. This was originally tested using the default version, as I did not notice that the OP was on Xbox.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

I downloaded the airport from the World Hub. All four windsocks at the airport are rotated appropriately, and testing of all four windsocks show that they all behave as expected.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Runway 08L: Wind at 80, windsock pointing correctly

Runway 08R: Wind at 80, windsock pointing correctly

Runway 26L: Wind at 260, windsock pointing correctly

Runway 26R: Wind at 260, windsock pointing correctly

Hi,

so the airport in your screenshots is an addon?
In my original post I referred to the stock EDDP.
I have no scenery addons, airport , whatever installed.
It’s all vanilla MSFS2020.

Hello,

No, the World Hub is an official Microsoft/Asobo tool where developers can fix default airports in the sim. I downloaded the default EDDP airport (it is the only airport you can download – you cannot download third-party or bespoke airports). I was about to fix the windsocks, when I saw that the windsocks were rotated as expected.

May I ask, which runway is that windsock on in the screenshot? I know from your cockpit that the wind is coming from 164°, but I can’t tell the orientation of the windsock.

It would be great to see a screenshot of the windsock, runway number, and winds in the default weather tool in one shot, if possible.

Just did another test RWY 26L and it is still inverted:

Thanks! That’s interesting. Your runway looks different than mine. Do you have the bespoke EDDP installed?

Yes I do. I tested removing the bespoke but the windsock is not there anymore.

Could be a caching issue. I’ll bet if you restarted MSFS, the windsocks would be there.

But I think this explains it: The issue is in the bespoke airport, not the default airport. This airport is an artifact of when windsocks were reversed everywhere, and developers flipped around their windsocks 180° in order to compensate for the bug rather than fixing the root cause. Unfortunately, this airport came out in 1.21.13.0. Windsocks were fixed in 1.16.2.0, which means that this developer reversed them anyway without knowing that they were fixed, and clearly never tested them. That’s not good practice.

This also goes back to what I was saying in the other bug report: Developers of bespoke airports should place the default windsocks in the correct spot and use them instead of excluding the default windsocks and creating their own, unless using custom models. That didn’t happen here.

You were right, deleting EDDP and restarting the sim, windsock is there and shows correct direction.

Hello FrankO7109,

Would it be possible to edit your first post and change the title to say something about the bespoke EDDP, like this?

Windsocks at bespoke EDDP point in the wrong direction

and to change the detailed steps to include a step where you go to Content Manager and install the Microsoft-provided EDDP airport?

That would help the developers reproduce the issue quicker.

Hi, it’s a bit hard to see but the GPS shows that the aircraft is on RWY 08 R.
And I have also filled in the location field.

I have edited my original post but how can a bespoke EDDP come onto my XBox. I have never deliberately installed it. Was it part of some world update and can it bee uninstalled?

Regards, Frank

Thanks for pointing that out. I should have noticed that you were on Xbox; sorry for missing that. Unfortunately, with Xbox, bespoke airports are installed for you automatically. It would have been installed when the Game of the Year Edition came out.

I say “unfortunately” because on Xbox, there is no way to uninstall these items. Other users have reported that when they buy another airport where a bespoke airport already exists, they can see both airports on top of each other. As far as I am aware, there is no way to fix that except to get a refund for the airport you just bought and delete it.

See the following Wishlist topic requesting the ability to delete this content:

I’m not sure if you use the voting function in the forums much, but you can vote for that Wishlist topic, and the development team gives things some level of prioritization based on how many votes it has. You can also vote for your own bug reports, like this one (which I voted for!).

Thank you very much for clearing this all up. Interesting information.

I disagree. I’m on Xbox X. I have the premium deluxe version of msfs, so KORD was included. I disabled it in content manager when I bought the much better payware KORD. I’ve disabled other items as well.

You are correct, there are a few stock airports that are able to be deleted, the vast majority however are not.

Oh. Did not know that. I assumed more were able too
