With the power of AI these days (as in 2023/24, rather than 2020), I'm surprised auto gen buildings in FS2020 still look so poor in many places

Blackshark has never coped at all with anything looking vaguely historic. Basically anything European. Over in America its marginally better because most buildings are modern and square and of a standard form and shape.

I’d just love them to try and optimise photogrammetry a bit better. Nothing beats good photogrammetry for accuracy but boy does it hit performance. It’ll be interesting to see how they’re approaching things with FS2024.

IF there are not massive improvements across every aspect of the sim with 2024, I may lose my mind and refuse to upgrade, considering they made promises that 2020 would be THE sim up until at least 2030, a promise they seem to have forgotten. I am well aware that technology changes at light speed, and if, IF, they do 2024 the right way, it can be a huge game changer that makes the 2020 version look like FS 3.0. Especially if they make it so all of our multi-core monster CPUs are fully utilized instead of the single-threaded mainthread that causes the performance to suffer massively compared to what proper use of those cores could do, so people with the absolute latest CPU/GPUs are running at 200 fps, instead of struggling to get 30, I may get over it.

I think you’re setting yourself up for disappointment on multiple levels there mate!

Keep your expectations low.

maybe but also in some cases there’s too much variation in fs2020 where there’s a row of terrace houses

I came to the forums wondering about this exact same thing: structure quality. When I got the sim, I was gigly about flying to my home. I picked a chopper at a small airport near my home, and I flew over to my home only to be greeted by something that resembles a leaf painted blanket over sticks.

Some selected cities, usually the important cities, are modeled with photogrammetry. In those cases, what you see in the game is as it is in real life. If you happen to live in one of those cities you can go to your house and land in you driveway.

Well, if you land inside a photogrammetry city you’re in for a disappointment. It looks good 1000-2000 feet above. But at ground level it all looks melted and post apocalyptic.

Some are (a lot) better than others. Try Seville in Spain.

yes about photogrammetry…there’s “something” up with it… dont ask me what, cause i cant tell you. But my PG looked all melted as you say… and two days ago it was suddenly and completely fixed. My PG now looks really unbelievable i dont think i have ever seen it this good before. I may have had a broken game without knowing it.

This is pamplona spain

I’m on PC

Yea as I say, some of the Spain stuff is really quite sharp and straight. Ever since the Italy update they are mostly a lot better than before. Really depends on the city though and what data sources they found to use I suppose.

Maybe AI could inprove the photogrametry by straighting the 3D models.

Hah yeah - except when it comes to shapes that really aren’t straight lines, what’s it gonna do then?

Churches would end up looking like apartments, statues would be like the new monstrosities.

I think AI is given too much credit

AI is definitely on upswing and is far more mature today than it was in 2020. Hardware required to run it is still very expensive though which has a direct bearing on operations cost.

Looks great and nothing would be better if it could look this good when landing next to it. Have you tried to go up really close, just to see if it degenerates? I wonder if it varies due to server issues or if the internet connection has something to do with it. I don’t have the the most powerful pc, but I feel the photogrammetry may change somewhat, from time to time.

One of the problems with getting AI to generate buildings is that it has no references. We know the buildings are wrong as we have familiarity with them. The AI has satellite images, often of dubious quality and presumably lidar data for the building height and that is it. How is it to know that you crazy paved your house or painted it with stripes

I dont think people are looking for exact copies but instead more variety in the autogen. They used to have new building types in the sim updates but havnt seen any new ones in a while.

I have the suspicion (nothing more) that my game wasn’t downloading content quite right. It was downloading, yes, i’ve a habit of monitoring network and i could see it working. But its like it was stopping half way… it didnt reach the higher levels of detail. Or maybe it was using a botched server… no idea. The thing is, its way, way better now than it was last week (for me).

I had a “misterious” system update in between, and that fixed it.

accuracy is more important than quality.

Like really, 3d photogrammetry isn’t high quality, but because its accurate colour wise, and shape wise, it doesn’t matter that much.
