With the power of AI these days (as in 2023/24, rather than 2020), I'm surprised auto gen buildings in FS2020 still look so poor in many places

Surely we can expect better AI autogen 3d buildings now? in 2024?

Autogen buildings, especially where I fly most (UK), is particularly poor and ugly looking, and has not changed much, and is still very inaccurate to real life.

I will agree that the autogen scenery could, and should, be better in FS2024 but you are mixing a couple of things here.
The buildings themselves are not generated by AI. They are pre-made models that come bundled with the game. So far i have detected 4 different “families”… north america, western europe, eastern europe and asia, and each of the families has a number of different models. What the AI does in this case is analyze the imagery from bing and tell the game what it should place and where, and the same goes with trees.
The buildings are ugly and lack variety, true. But actually I think in this case the AI is doing a pretty darn good job. Some cities dont look too bad at all, and they are 100% autogenerated. Thats something.
-----EDIT----
I forgot the most important thing. Im pretty sure there is an MS official “UK” family of buildings as an addon that you can download, i think i saw it once. Have you tried that?

They don’t seem to have ever done anything to “re-run” or “re-place” buildings since before the 2020 release, so it’s not too surprising that autogen buildings haven’t changed in the last three and a half years.

If they’re still not great in MSFS 2024, time to give a shout.

My beef is with the massive structures in the middle of fields and the gigantic multi-block sized buildings all over the place.

Why would there be a giant 4 block sized warehouse out in the middle of nowhere?

found it!

last on the list i would give that a try, surely it will show some improvement

Hehe Paris is photogrammetry, so you have forgotten to turn it on or something, it does not look like that in the game if everything is right.

Do you have the France City Update installed? Looks OK on my PC:

It looks proper to me. I’ve flown through it several times. :joy:

It looks right in that I bought a papercraft building and.let the 7yo put it together way.

these soybean fields are more densely populated than central Los Angeles.

the architect of this complex is a genius.

people are worried AI will take their jobs. It can’t tell the difference between a corn field and a building. It can barely even have a coherent conversation.

If you fly that low, you may find a military jet, with missiles, escorting you away.

what an awesome addition to 2024! how cool would that be

Look how many different building types there are in real life. Imagine how many extra autogen archetypes you would need to make it look more realistic. Also, where would the data exist that tells the AI to place this building or that one. The data exists for the type of building I.e. commercial, residential etc., and how many floors it has. It won’t know if it has a patio, or front porch.

For more accuracy you need TIN aka Photogranmetry.

Yeah well I think the artist work is the main issue really, AI is only as good as what you allow it to do.

If AI is working with poor textures, ugly models… then it will produce that, even if it’s really good ai.

If you made every house texture look like it’s made of mud… it would look stupid, but AI is not at fault.

It’s just not acceptable that the sim looks still, soo poor, at this stage… They better make up for it in 2024 or I will be very very unhappy.

Fs2020 still looks, (not always but often) like some incomplete demo or prototype made in 2014. If you took away a couple of crucial things like the lighting and clouds, you’d really be looking at just google earth with blurry grainy imagery and some overlayed generic textures when you get close to objects.

I dont think that’s a fair defense.

there are a lot of building types, but generally speaking, there are most prominent building types that take up like 80%+ of buildings.

FS2020 is just completely out in every way possible nearly. Almost nothing looks accurate, almost nothing looks like a real building in that area.

I can understand 10-30% inaccuracy, but its like 80% inaccurate.

My whole city (of 3 million people) is in fs2020 made up of about 70% 1story bungalows that have completely unrealistic colours and roofing types.

In reality, bungalows in the city make up maybe like 5% of the buildings, and they don’t even look like the ones in fs2020.

Thats WAY too unacceptable.

Actually, it’s not that hard… in many countries, there are building types that are very very common… like in the UK there are two story semi detached houses that basically look the same wherever you are in the county, and have a few variations.

My guess is FS2024 will see a big evolution of what Blackshark AI can do. It hasn’t really been changed or updated much since the sim launched in August 2020. Its pretty old now.

can anyone NOT fly trough the Arc de Triomphe…?

I have the latest procedural UK buildings update. It still looks poor. Although a tiny bit better.

I think at the very least they should introduce some random variation in size, color and contrast between one building and the next one. They all look too similar. And procedural buildings are ideal for this. Take for example the photo of Paris (see above). The autogen looks like a 3d cad model before having the textures applied. I get it, the real life buildings there are not precisely a wonderland of vibrant colors, but still. They could very easily make it look much better than what we have now. I say, the same amount of variation that they obviousy introduced in shape, do the same for color, contrast and height. (height maybe not that much)
