WMR needs an update

I got this off of Microsoft’s support website.

Win10 itself will be deprecated after October 2025. What that means is that support for the product will end. No more feature updates or security patches.

Which is it?

Deprecated: Features that exist in the current release are still supported but are no longer being developed and will no longer be included in future releases.
Discontinued: Features that are no longer supported.

Deprecated. It is recommended that computers be updated to Win11, but Win10 will continue to function after 10/25. Security and feature updates will no longer be available after that date.

DJ Shio’s Solution here …worked for me after this (terrible) update. (I’d already tried and failed rolling back using Win settings - and then again with the cmd line (standalone uninstaller) method.) Having had a VR flight, rebooting and then another all seems well. I’ve taken the precaution of creating Restore Points, and also installing GPEdit.msc on my Win 10 Home machine, then using it to stop automatic updates. (See [here])(Enable Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) in Windows 10 & 11 Home Edition - MajorGeeks)

Is it realistic or wishful thinking that a hot fix will be released?

Can Windows Mixed Reality for Steam®VR be used to run the HP G2?

Wishful thinking. 24H2 has killed WMR, and it’s not going to rise like the dead in a zombie movie.
Our G2’s will become anchors if and when we are forced to move past 23H2.

That’s my point I’m only using Windows 10 22H2… :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

You should be good to go then.

I would use the Group Policy Edit method that Player328677123 linked to a few posts above to prevent automatic updates - just to be sure you don’t wake up one day to find that 24H2 has been installed.

I can’t speak intelligently to the SteamVR question.

AFAIK, “WMR for Steam VR” is a simply linker app that allows WMR to be used for Steam games - so it still relies on a functional WMR. See my post above for a procedure that has got my WMR working again after the terrible quality update KB 5052077.

So let me get this straight.

Ok first posted flagged as inappropriate due to language. Making another attempt.

I purchased the HP G2 v2 for myself to play MSFS, and 3 x META O2 for my 2 boys and my father.

I then purchased MSFS 2020 and now 2024 via MS Store, since I am allowed to share the license between 5 family members (my 2 boys) and my father.

And now MS out of the blue has decided to end support for VR in Windows by killing WMR, which means:

  1. My expensive HP G2 v2 will be a brick and impossible to sell
  2. I will need to purchase 4 x deluxe licenses of MSFS 2024, since Steam does not allow sharing of licenses.
  3. All my other WMR apps will no longer work.
  4. I will need to buy new VR glasses for my self.
  5. Plus all the work and hassle going into this

This is not just arrogant, it is simply unacceptable!

Surely there has to be a way to bring back WMR after having being forced to sintall 24H2 at some point?

Looking at a loss of about USD$1500 , minimum here.

As far as discontinuing WMR is concerned, I agree completely. I bought my G2 from HP when it went on sale - before MS announced the end of WMR.

I can’t help but think they had some inside information. I really shouldn’t be too surprised…

Update:
I was able to navigate my way to Microsoft tech support yesterday [877-696-7786]. I got bumped up from level 1 to level 2 support after speaking first with sales.
I patiently explained what was going on with KB5052077…no one knew about the issue but after pointing them to a few blogs they got the picture. Both levels of support wrote up a report and sent it on to engineering with a confirmation case # sent to me. I was told that it usually takes a max of 2 weeks to resolve the KB issue…as for Windows 11 24H2 it will end WMR and they said there will be no reprieve. This is very sad indeed for those on 24H2…I would urge everyone to call MS and complain.

There isn’t. Microsoft are sadly ending WMR and its been explained on this forum that its all but impossible* for anyone to make WMR work outside of Microsoft.

*technically its possible but it would require a truly huge amount of work and no one is going to want to put all that effort into making the HP G2 work when its a pretty old headset these days.

Hello,

I have the same problem since this morning,
Has anyone tried deleting KB5052077 via Windows Update History then deleting WMR unplugging the HP REVERB G2 headset then plugging it back in to reinstall WMR?
Did this work for anyone?

Thanks for your feedback

Tried and failed. But see the first of my posts above for what worked for me.

What are the choices in VR for purchasing a new HMD that will work with MS minus WMR?
What platform do other VR HMD work off of if there is no WMR?

How many of you guys have tried a system restore point back to a date prior to the KB5052077 install? I have restored mine & disabled all of my windows updates in the ‘update & security’ tab. Make sure you do this straight after your system restore & then restart your system. I have been on WMR for 5 days now with no issues.
It took me 4-5 times to get it all to work but it seems to be holding. I have also now created my own system restore point & called it ‘WMR stable’ so it’s easilly accessible…
Oh I’m on windows 10 too…

I got screwed when I bought new PC i9 4090, came with 24H2! no rolling back, so HP Reverb 2 is land fill potential now. I had valve index, went to that for a while, but bought the Meta Quest 3 on the boycott spending day a couple weeks back…its been really good and super clear, and seems to do better with god rays, and limited sweet-spot HP had.

I have looked at a few videos on how to re-install Windows 10 Pro without loosing Apps and Data etc. but they all also download the updates. Does anyone know of a way to re-install but whithout the updates?
