WMR needs an update

My HP Reverb G2 has always worked fine in MSFS 2020 and now in MSFS 2024, however overnight I get this Purple message. “Couldn’t install Windows Mixed Reality. WMR needs an update”. I have tried loads of online suggestions but nothing cures this problem. I do feel this has nothing to do with the HP headset. Any ideas out there would be much appreciated.

Have you installed 24H2 update for Windows 11 by any chance?

If not, and you are still on 23H2 try re-installing these two packages:

Microsoft-Windows-Holographic-Desktop-FOD-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab

HoloLensSensors_10.0.19041.2054.zip

Thanks Marklar666.
OP, you may already know this, but it might help those who don’t.

Installing Windows 11 Build 24H2 will deprecate WMR, and your Reverb G2 will no longer work.

The only fix is to revert to Build 23H2.
Microsoft will try to (and keep trying to) update your OS to 24H2.

just had a look on Update history and “Windows 10 version 24H2” is installed, but not Windows 11. (I am still using Windows 10) How would I re-install the 2 packages?

You will find instructions on Install Windows Mixed Reality in offline environments and WSUS - Enthusiast Guide | Microsoft Learn

Will look now. Thanks for the info

I forgot that Win10 also had a 24H2 update. Regardless…

Per Microsoft:

Windows Mixed Reality devices are not supported with Windows 11, version 24H2 and newer. Windows Mixed Reality support is limited to Windows 10, version 20H2 through Windows 11, version 23H2.

I had this problem over the weekend, fixed it by doing a restore point prior to the update KB5052077. If it’s installed it will be visible in your update history list & when it was downloaded, just restore it to a date prior to the update & remember to disable auto updates of windows 10. I think it’s disgusting that Microsoft has not notified us that this update will render WMR useless. It’s fairly common knowledge that Windows 11 had an update that was going to cause this & notification was given by Microsoft prior to it’s release. Windows 10, no notification whatsoever. My G2 is working perfectly & I can’t afford to upgrade for a while.

Thanks jcweston. Yes I do have that muckupdate KB5052077. But it doesen’t show in the “Uninstall an Update” list. I am tempted to reinstall Windows 10 (saving files etc) But don’t know how to stop it reinstalling updates. Like you an upgrade is out of the question.

OP, are you running Win10 Pro, or Win10 Home?

hi, there’s quite a few youtube instruction videos about this. Basically you want to keep receiving securitypatches and virusdefenitions updates, but you want to block the update to 24H2… Block Windows 11 Update and Stay on 23H2

Does Windows 10 24H2 also depreciate WMR?

only W11 as far as I know… the word is that W10 users are ‘good for another year’… whatever that means

Hi BP228. I am running Windows 10 Pro

It’s really the only reason I haven’t upgraded to win 11 yet…good to know I’m safe on Win 10 for the time being.

As many now know March 3 update KB5052077 broke Windows 10 Mixed Reality…does HP G2 run on Steam VR running MS flight sim 2020?
I’m not interested in some of the mentioned fixes such as rolling back before KB5052077 and disabling MS updates.

I’m running Windows 10 & WMR was killed in an update last week sometime around the 2-3-2025. I did a system restore & got WMR working again but it’s done a couple of background auto updates since then & I have had to do system restore 4x in the past week. I think I have it sorted now & have created my own system restore point (WMR stable) just in case. 2 days now without any updates.

I’ve spent the last 2 days researching this and it seems at this time until a hot fix rolls out…rolling back and blocking future updates is the interim fix. Unfortunately for me I won’t take a chance and do this as I need my system running 100%. I use my system for more important functions than the sim although I really look forward to it and will miss it till I buy a new computer and VR HMD. The G2 was a splendid VR headset and cannot see myself going back to using my old Oculus 1 :unamused:

Rolling back does not work. It still stabs you in the back afterwards. Go ahead and try to reinstall your WMR.

I did a reinstall of WMR but it didn’t work…I am quite disappointed…will monitor this thread and great to know I"m not alone in my frustration. I will be calling MS tech support in the next few days and will report back here.
