From all the default aircraft in the game, is there one with or without free mods that allows for actual IFR flying? Meaning, it has a working avionics suite that allows for proper flight plan manipulation, loading of procedures etc.?
Yes.
Working Title mod for CJ4.
Salty mod for B747-8
GTN750 mod for a very wide range of a/c (although you really need the payware version).
Anything with the WT G1000nxi mod.
Sadly the WT G3000 mod still has serious bugs with how it implements procedures (random waypoints, early activation of the procedure, other unexpected behaviour).
All have their quirks -some true to life and some bugs. I find getting the G3X to capture glide path on RNAV approaches pretty hit and miss.
Of course it depends on exactly how much fidelity you are looking for and then that becomes as much of a question about how weather and ATC is implemented rather than just the avionics.
Thanks. Need to try the WT CJ4 then.
The G1000 NGix doesn’t work for me. My external controls are not compatible with it.
I’m just looking for a proper avionics suite with working LNAV and AP. So I can fly on VATSIM.
Once Asobo manages to get that stuff working, then we can call it a flight simulator (because then it can at least be used as a procedure trainer). Now it’s just a flying game.
As a VATSIM user myself I strongly suggest the Working Title G1000 NXi. While I personally will generally stick to the Cessna 152 (for both VFR and IFR) I know that the G1000 NXi is very, very good for use on the network.
EDIT Sorry, just read your controls don’t work with it.
Here is the CJ4…
When you say external controls, do you mean a peripheral like the Saitek panels or Bravo? If so you can use SPAD Next as the driver - for example the WT CJ4 will not work with the Saitek multipanel (autopilot) using the standard Logitech driver, but it works perfectly (and then some - I have nearly all the controls in the CJ4 mapped to a physical control) with SPAD. It works very well with the G1000nxi too.
I fly the WT CJ4, the Salty 747 and the King Air with the GTN750 mod on vatsim all the time with few issues, flying SIDS, STARS, ILS and RNP approaches. All can do directs of different kinds (direct to waypoint and direct to leg) and have fully customisable flight plans. The CJ4 has a good VNAV and can do holds and missed approaches too. The GTN750 mod allows you to fly directs to waypoints within a procedure.
The one I would avoid is the WT G3000 - its too random for vatsim.
Not sure about the FBW A320 as I never fly it. I know it wont do VNAV, but I understand the latest experimental version has a good custom flight planner.
I have an ITRA ActivPanel Navstack and also like to use the Peix Glascockpit android app.
But in particular, the ActivPanel is awesome for it’s hardware controls. Will be sad to see this no longer working with the the NGix.
That’s an awesome stack. Hope it works with the CJ4.
There is another thread asking Asobo to have an API that exposes all the SIM events so folk can use their hardware peripherals. It had a lot of votes the last time I checked so I hope Asobo listen.
I fly the TBM930 with the WT G3000 Mod on Vatsim all the time and it works as long as you know the quirks.
When ATC tells you “direct” somewhere and once activated, I delete all the waypoints prior to the “direct” waypoint. That way the aircraft cant circle back.
I input all waypoints manually. Less headache that way.
When cleared the ILS I find its easiest to go “direct” to one of the fixes on the glidepath and the AP will intercept… stuff like that. Cumbersome but after a while you get used to it
You are right of course. And the G3000 mod is very nice and most flyback problems can be resolved by avoiding the world map flight planner and doing it in cockpit as you describe. Do you manually program the procedure waypoints too? That could get a bit tiresome!
I do, but again there are shortcuts. Often waypoints in SID or STAR have no altitude or speed restriction nor a course change. so I do not program those. Same with ILS, if there are 4 fixes in the ILS I usually only enter the the last one and a middle one.
Flying the TBM leaves you lots of time in the air with not much to do, so…
Lol, yes. But I wouldn’t want to have to programme in-air if the controller was tardy in assigning you an approach. Stressful. I guess the thing to do is put what you expect in anyway and then request that approach if ATC assigns you something different. Anything is better than the dreaded flyback. Sometimes it starts going to a waypoint that isn’t even in the flight plan or shown on the map…
FBW A320 experimental is great. It has a fully custom autopilot and FMS for LNAV. VNAV is also coming soon. I’ve used it for hundreds of hours of Vatsim flying.
It is very irritating that after being released way last year, the MSFS avionics are still screwed up.
It just goes to show you that Eye Candy and the Marketplace generates more $$Interest$$ to the corporation.
The Working Title G1000 NXi will become stock at some point and from what I have heard they have a goal to make it a near 1:1 of the real deal.
We are not aware of any external hardware control issues since NXi 0.8.0. Are you experiencing this with the latest NXi version, and if so, can you give more details on the issue?
What controls are you using?
Answered - see above
Consider this for GA plane with Garmin GNS 530/430:
Or buy Aerosoft CRJ, equipped with custom FMS/avionics.
