Didn’t Jorg state the new mesh was a higher resolution? In which case is the Orbx one not obsolete?
That was my understanding, but it’s not 100% clear, is it.
I think it would depend on the coverage. Perhaps the new MS DEM data is higher resolution, but Orbx’s may span a wider coverage area? Or perhaps not. It remains to be seen. Outside of people working with this data (Orbx), no one knows for sure.
But since they’re doing both the world update and the NZ mesh add-on, I would expect that they would play well together. I don’t see one replacing the other. Orbx will still want to continue selling theirs. So I’m sure they’ll ensure it all works together, and that their add-on has some added value that the WU data doesn’t have to make their add-on still commercially viable. Perhaps higher res? Or perhaps wider coverage?
Sure, but that’s still all assumptions.
Speculation can go anywhere, but it’s not fact until they clarify exactly what the situation is with them regarding technical integration. Orbx should know, they developed both of them.
I’m hoping they at least make it clear in the pre-release or release notes, but that’s no guarantee either.
Or at the very least Orbx should make it clear to the customers of their NZ mesh product, ideally before the release so we know what to do with it. I’d rather save the space if it’s not really needed.
Is this still on track to release tomorrow? Anyone know the exact time?
Hello @Hedbonkerfs,
World Update 12: New Zealand has always been scheduled for Thursday, February 23. We have not announced the exact release time yet.
Thanks,
MSFS Team
Thanks so much!
Normally the release time is 1600Z/11 AM EST. But-I could be mistaken.
no the southern alps have snow on the tops nealry year round but in summer that area can get 30deg .its a great place but i hope they get it right not all the things they screw up
Hi,
I was reading through this thread tonight and came upon your post. I also have a lot of connection issues when flying in NZ, and it only seems to happen there lately. I also have the Orbx mesh. I never thought to try removing it from my community folder. It will be interesting to see whether that helps my issue or not. It sounds like it definitely helped you.
Cheers,
Especially Asia…
Do i have to uninstall the orbx NZ Mesh tomorrow before installing wu12?
Deltaflyer44, it should almost certainly address the issue. When we first identified it, everyone who had the issue and removed the mesh no longer had problems.
I’m more-than-a-little nervous that the WU12 mesh - being from Holger / ORBX as well - will reintroduce the issue. Fingers crossed that this isn’t the case.
Nobody seems to know, and they don’t seem to want to tell us.
They should tell us beforehand as a matter of courtesy to existing customers, so we know whether to uninstall before the update, if it’s not needed.
Shall we run a pool on whether that info will be in the release notes?
I bet so too haha ;)… standard Asobo and MS behavior. They could just make a clear statement but no…
I just uninstalled it to not cause any issues during install. I can still install it after that if it provides any visual advantage in ground texture quality.
From ORBX forums and Holger himself:
Hi all,
regarding the NZ mesh: the coming World Update will use the same LINZ source data as we did. About a third of the country is covered with 1-m LiDAR data, the remainder with about 10-m resolution.
The difference is that our package is pre-compiled at 10m while the MS version gets streamed at up to the full resolution of the source. Keep in mind though that this means that the sim will load and cycle through three additional levels of detail near the user aircraft, which can cause visible ground changes. In addition, we use different algorithms for generating the embedded LOD levels, which usually helps with retaining terain shapes at mid to far distances.
Once the World Update is released we welcome feedback from existing users; it’s a sizeable area to assess for pros and cons.
As for Landmarks Auckland, we have started the process of making it compatible with the new mesh, imagery, watermasking, and photogrammetry. Plus. we’re doing the necessary model optimisations to finally release an Xbox version as well.
Given that MS are making changes pretty much to the last minute we won’t be ready for Day One but we definitely want to release as soon as possible.
Cheers, Holger
Thanks. They still don’t spell it out, but I guess seeing as it’s the same base data but different implementation you need to choose which method you would prefer: 10m Orbx pre-compiled custom Lods or 1/3rd 1m + 2/3rd 10m + MS Lods.
It doesn’t seem logical to have both installed, and they haven’t answered the real question: if both are installed which one overrides the other?
I’d like to assume the MS mesh will take priority, but that could be a bad assumption as the Orvx mesh already overrides the MS mesh currently, and maybe will do so again?
I guess it’s best to go with the update first, see what it’s like.
where is this much-announced and long-awaited update? nothing for the moment no announcement another bluff
like all other times i think it will be 0800 pacific time, lol
I’m currently expecting the update to land at 1600Z today, but as far as I am aware, still nothing has been confirmed by either MS or Asobo. I don’t even recall there being a trailer either, so maybe it’s something they are not proud of.
