X-Plane Circle External Cam?

This is a question for anyone who is familiar with X-Plane.

In XP I mainly use the External/Circle camera. That’s a fun camera that places the view outside in a stationary view that holds its lateral position as the plane turns, sort of like on a gimbal.

Whereas the MSFS2020 external camera turns with the plane like its magically attached to a really long selfie stick, which I really dislike. Does anyone know of a way to get the External/Circle camera functionality in MSFS2020?

Thanks!

Use a drone mode, perhaps?

MSFS 2020 uses some very bizarre and complicated drone views and other external view options, yet no basic flyby or no stationary lateral holds unless you want to flaff about with the ridiculous drone PAIN IN THE BACKSIDE options which even then doesn’t really fulfil what you’re after.

I use Xplane 11, though not as much since i got this sim. BUT XPLANE 11 is STILL far better with its camera options, its fantastic and far superior road traffic and also the better flight modelling which includes VTOL that sadly this sim doesnt even touch.

admittedly i’m not a drone cam expert, but are you able to still fly your plane while in drone mode?

yeah I still haven’t quite gotten the hang of the drone mode. i can’t get my mouse to turn the camera or joystick to control the plane, both which defeat the general purpose of what I’m trying to do.

I’m hoping there is indeed a way to achieve this functionality that I just haven’t discovered yet.

From what I can see there is no way to achieve “Circle view” within MSFS.

Drone mode is close, but in drone mode you can EITHER control the drone OR control the plane (swapped using “C”), never both at once. If they added a toggle to control BOTH the drone AND the plane at the same time, then we could use it like circle view.

The External view is also close, but, as we all know the camera still turns with the plane. This makes it a lot hard to sightsee from outside the plane imo, because I can never have full control over what the camera is looking at while also controlling the plane.

I’m in the same boat as OP here. I mainly used the Circle camera in XP, and I really miss it in MSFS. Even MSFS 2000 and the various MS Combat Flight Sims have a view that works just like circle cam. I’m surprised and disappointed that the views in MSFS 2020 are currently so limited. (that being said, hats off to the dev team. Flying from inside the cockpit without trackir is better than I thought it could ever be with all the snap views and different angles. I’m just bummed that I can’t make my go to external/sightseeing view work in this sim)
