XBOX Series X - Rolling CACHE?

Hi, Need some info here please. I read on various post relating to the CACHE on the XB, some say or refer to the size others mention deleting etc or even switch it off. I have just had a look at my settings and I have got it switched off and set at 0 possible because its’ off.
Questions

  1. Do I need it ON or OFF?
  2. What size if ON do I need to set it on?
  3. And what benefits would I get having it on?

I think the honest answer is that no one has a clue what difference it makes. Mines is currently on with 32gbs.

Thanks Thats what I was expecting

Try it for yourself and do what works for you. It’s easy to change.

On SU7/8 I did a lot of testing and turned it off, I found minimal impact to photogrammetry areas, no impact to any other areas, and a reduction in stuttering and pauses.

Since SU9 I’ve turned it back on again with 16GB partly because that’s what Asobo recommend in the faq. I find SU9 is so bad with stuttering and pauses that I can’t tell any difference with it on or off.

I might go back to turning it off again, I’m not flying photogrammetry areas due to xbox CTD and it doesn’t appear to make any difference elsewhere, and at least it removes the need to reset it when we get updates.

For the last month or so the setting has disappeared from my Xbox.

As far as i can make out from other players posts on the subject rolling cache is the amount of data the memory stores while updating the terrain overlays. If you have it switched on (they recommend 16gb) your console/pc will store data on areas you are flying over so if you regularly fly the same routes or from same places it wont need to use up so much effort loading the terrain each time.

But i may be wrong

I mean that’s the theory but from lots of experimentation and use it really doesn’t work very well. Caching should be much more effective than it is, I think it has some implementation problems.

Sadly you aren’t the only one, not sure if Asobo have even acknowledged this bug?

I do still have the settings on xbox so this bug seems to affect a random set of users.

I cant even find the cache settings any more.
It use to be under data settings but its not there now. Only time i can access it is when msfs doesn’t log in properly and i go through the initial settings bumph

Wonder if it would be better if you could choose the areas to flag for cacheing (which I guess is like the PC implementation(?) ie if you fly a certain country often or a specific region then if flagged MSFS will allow that area to cache. If you fly a few random routes never to return, that doesn’t cache as there’d be no benefit

I think that would be great if it worked well, especially for those on poor or unreliable internet connections. From what I’ve read the PC equivalent doesn’t work very well so I wouldn’t have a lot of hope that they’d get this right.

Poor & unreliable connection here :waving_hand:.
Honestly we’ve only just got a better connection than bean cans and string out in the wilds of the Fens

I’d love to see the figures behind all the PG areas. How much data are we looking at here. For quite some I’d love if we could straight up download this kinda stuff. PC users can pre-cache and things like that.

I have my cache on and set at 12GB. I clear it when there is an update or if I purchase a marketplace add-on and I just randomly clear it about once a week or so as well. ymmv…

I personally have it on 16 GB and I always delete it after an update, then re-set it to 16. I didn’t really have more issues with 8 GB either. However, when I turned it off completely I experienced many more stutters during gameplay. So it works best for me with 8 or 16 GB.

Rolling cache is essentially a cache like in a browser. It keeps downloaded data locally, so in theory if you frequently fly the same plane or the same locations, this data can be loaded much faster and not as much streaming is needed.

It’s surprising how different this works for everybody. I was having stutter issues about 6 months ago, so I turned cashe off and it was like magic, all stutters disappeared. I have left it off ever since and my MSFS runs fairly smooth. Since then we have had several updates so I have no idea if this is my best option. I hate to tinker with it now as I don’t want to mess anything up, technology hates me. LOL

This was precisely my experience, too.

I would say if you find a setting that works for you with regards to rolling cache then stay with it until it doesn’t work for you. Insightful I know.

I have tried countless variations. My internet is fast, 5ping east cost/30 west coast, 300-750+mib/s downloads on a regular basis(if the server is fast enough). Fast internet helps without cache and is usually fine. I do find the 16GB cache however, is probably the best setting overall, fast internet or not. You just need to remember to clear it(which they don’t have any more, now you just delete and essentially set up again) after you download any updates or new marketplace add-ons. Although with SU9 you get enough CTD’s that delete it for you… I’ve spent a lot of time flying a given route multiple times making sure it’s over 3rd party heavy areas and looked for the tiniest differences.

Biggest performance boosters:
Live weather off(weather preset pro or your own)
Live traffic off(AI can be 100%, it’s random that you get much but doesn’t seem to matter if there’s 15 around). Even a bunch of MP aircraft doesn’t bring it down much, but live traffic does.
PG off for most areas unless it’s specifically enhanced(looks better anyway for un-enhanced areas).
If your TV has freesync, which is an older generation enhancement, turn it off

60HZ 4k HDR VRR, don’t use 120HZ.

Please, does anyone have any workaround to restore lost space after increasing rolling cashe, in case we decide to disable or decrease it?

More precisely, the default is 8 GB. If we set 16, immediately Flight Simulator reserved space will increase, or course. The problem is that even if we completely disable it, the game will not give this amount back, unless completely reinstalling from scratch.
