[Xbox Series X/S] Visual Downgrade - LOD Reduction

They are hundreds deep. They have the manpower.

Changing settings is relatively easy compared to developing a helicopter flight model and thermal updrafts.

The settings already exist for them to adjust.

They would need to test their settings a bit (and betas are great for that) but the tools to do this already exist and everyone on PC has them available in sim to adjust themselves.

The main job is moving some sliders and watching the stats in Developer Mode until they get desired results. Everyone on PC has done this a dozen times themselves if they have done it once.

This makes for an excellent question in the Q&A😊

Absolutely an amazing job with the clouds indeed

Good question and you raise an interesting point with longevity in mind for the consoles. This must have been considered in the development stage as the PC can evolve but the consoles cannot in terms of what it is capable of. Therefore, there has to come a point where the console has to separate itself somewhat from the PC. If they are suggesting this point has been reached then we need to find the correct balance between visuals, stability and performance then we found it prior to this update with the Xbox in mind. Everyone I’m sure would be fine with these visuals and future COMPATIBLE add-ons.

Agreed. If performance maximums have been reached give people some options to control graphics (su10) vs performance (su11) and stop evolving the console version beyond hot fixes. When a new console comes out, release a new flashy sim version. Simple as that.

In “normal” XBOX games the performance mode and the quality mode are both usable under all circumstances. Usually it’s the player’s choice between frame rate and graphical fidelity.

In MSFS, it would be something different. Theoretically if you were using certain add ons or planes you’d only be able to use “performance mode” or the sim would crash as it did for some before SU11.

I wonder if MS’s XBOX rules allows a developer to put in a mode where it would crash the sim. Do they trust us XBOX players enough to allow for that possibility?

I am not entirely sure this is the case.

You would just experience the occasional stutter in a Performance Mode, and perhaps some increased odds of instability if you ran a heavy addon. I only say this because that is what PC users experience if they load the Fenix A320 but leave their sim configured for the Cessna 152.

An overtaxed system is more likely to crash, but usually it just experiences more slowdown than a PC configured for a more advanced, study level airliner.

In any case, FPS and Main Thread timing can vary WILDLY depending on the type of addons you are using and the plane you are flying on PC. A hot air balloon over farmland has an entirely different impact on performance compared to that Fenix A320 taxiing at Heathrow. And I am sure the plane you choose on Xbox, and the scenery you use has similar impacts on performance. It would be wonderful to have a few options. And really, the Series S especially could level up with proper FSR implementation.

This downgrade on Xbox is getting worse and worse and Ive double checked if Online Data is on. Hard to believe they released it in this state.

Agreed. I’m on series S as well and have never had an issue with loading time, frame rate, input lag, etc. Not that many CTDs either. It just doesn’t seem “maxed out” now or before SU11 in my experience. It’s not over heating or fanning out. In fact watching many reviews on YouTube, I see a lot of PC simmers having terrible FPS with similar graphics. I’ve yet to see anything to suggest even the series S is “at it’s limit” and I sim everyday.

With that said, the graphics and rendering have definitely taken a hit. Could it be server related? I’ve been losing connection on and off like crazy since SU11 which is a new issue for me.

The core issue is not server related. It was present during beta, and the beta servers were smooth as silk (fewer players).

There have been server issues since the release, too, which seem related to a predictable player spike since the update and all the new planes were released. So occasionally folks who didn’t see the issue during beta might conflate some server issues and blame them all on this rollback.

In general, textures and LOD are this rollback issue. Things like square textures popping in and melted photogrammetry are server related.

Yup. Agree with you there

Please understand MSFS doesn’t have its own video capturing/rendering so when someone posts video to YouTube, they are running more programs that tax the CPU and GPU while flying. THEY get far better results on their systems when they are not recording. They sometimes even get better results than we see in the recording. MSFS alone can grind a great system to a halt if it is not configured correctly. Streamers need to prioritize other resources while they fly. It is not an accurate representation of how the sim runs unless they have thousands of dollars worth of dedicated hardware to handle the task independently and lets face it, a popular MSFS video on YouTube gets like 10,000 views. These folks aren’t making the kind of money they’d need to afford the hardware Digital Foundry has access to.

SU10 preformed better for me

Could be the reason. Though we can record on Xbox with no FPS issues. I’ve posted several to YouTube using only the record function on Xbox. With that theory shouldn’t the Xbox be taxing out if it is inferior?

The Xbox has dedicated resources to do this while you play anything. PCs don’t. If those resources were instead allocated to the games we play, the games would play a bit better.

And I do not think the Xbox is inferior. I think it is exactly as good as it is
which is better than what is required to play MSFS smoothly. It was just configured oddly for this update and we lost a LOT of graphical fidelity.

Understood. My main point is there are PC simmers all over these forums complaining about FPS and I’ve visually seen it in videos, yet never experienced any FPS/stutters on series S. Maybe it doesn’t mean much, just pointing out that even series S doesn’t feel “taxed”. Maybe it is

The Series S has been the rock star of this generation’s consoles so far for MSFS. It runs smooth and reliable.

The X, which tries to grab a bit more detail than it can smoothly run, has always been right on the cusp of stuttering.

Is the S better than the X? Of course not. Is it better optimized for MSFS? Time and time again, it seems like this is the case.

I like to do a Tuesday night flight in Chicago to relax after the day and the state of the game right now just breaks my heart. It’s just not the same. Maybe I’ll pull Ace Combat 7 back out until they fix this.

I even invested in a thurstmaster for this game. And Ive never bought any type accessories for any system or game in my life.

First world problems but this is so sad right now.

Well, load Ace Combat. Look at it. Enjoy it. And realize things here are not as bad as you thought. Ace Combat is a BLAST.

Also, Star Wars: Sqadrons. That game is smooth as silk on any console and LOVES a HOTAS.

Yeah, graphics were rolled back on Xbox, but play a few of these very good games and have fun. You will soon realize graphics were not their forte. MSFS still looks good. Just not nearly AS good as it did last week. We want that fidelity BACK. But it still puts other games to shame. And none of them give us the world. But a couple of them are great games in their own right!

Unfortunately I’m spending another evening falling out with my wife, heh, well that’s real life for you!

Maybe I’ll return here for more respite tomorrow.
