Xmapsy as an alternative to FlightEvents

Continuing the discussion from Connect to ForeFlight-MSFS 2020:

I can recommend you consider a payware product called xmapsy. It works well with Foreflight and MSFS, and includes pitch and roll data as well as GPS positional data. There is a free trial version available (with a very limited flight area) on the xmapsy.com website. You might take a look at it. FYI tablets that are using simconnect may experience issues if you are trying to run more than a SINGLE EFB program on your tablet at the same time. Example: Foreflight PLUS Navigraph Charts.

xmapsy also works well with Skydemon

I find using Skydemon on my iPad mini makes MSFS so much more like real VFR flight and it even seems to work simultaneously with Navigraph charts on the iPad mini as a backup reference tool while I am trying to learn about IFR flying

Might I enquire as to what type of PC hardware / Graphics card you’re using? Thanks.

I used to use XmapSy and for whatever reason, it stoped working. Unable to fix it, I tried a free alternative, found on an article of iPad Pilot News : FS2FF → GitHub - astenlund/fs2ff: A utility that connects Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 with ForeFlight, Sky Demon, Garmin Pilot, FlyQ EFB, and probably a few more EFB apps

Processor: Intel Core i7-9700K CPU, 8 Cores / 8 Threads, 3.6 - 4.9GHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB GDDR6 Graphics Card
CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro H100i RGB PLATINUM SE CPU Cooler
Quiet Cooling Fans Replacement Pack
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 AORUS MASTER Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 64GB DDR4 3600MHz Memory (4 x 16GB Sticks)
OS Drive: 1TB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS M.2 PCIe Solid State Drive
Secondary Hard Drive: Seagate 4TB BarraCuda 5900RPM Hard Disk

iPAD Mini 4 128 Gb 4G SIM model to run Skydemon and Navigraph Charts apps for VFR or IFR respectively

Very nice system, might I ask what your Frames Per Second are in MSFS? I would surmise you can run at fairly high graphics quality yes? What rudder pedals do you use? If you’re running the Saitek/Logitech Pro Flight Rudders, I would love to get what settings you are using for your rudders. I fly the Airbus A320neo FlyByWire (Experimental) and in straight linear settings it is quite squirrelly when landing… thus asking about settings, thanks. My laptop is a tad weak to run MSFS - I get poor frames around complex airports like FlyTampa’s KLAS/City Combo pack (19.99 at Marketplace) - but the eye candy is to die for! The airport alone is fantastic!

Hi yes it is a good system. I don’t have the video settings for MSFS maxxed out and have never actually bothered to check the FPS because so far I haven’t had problems with it.
I use TrackIR5 and a combo of Saitek X52 Pro FCS HOTAS and Saitek pedals that I have had for years.
I followed some instructions on here for calibrating my rudder pedals and will see if I can find them again.

No worries- I have altered my rudder sensitivity settings in MSFS and they are working much much better now, so no need to dig up your settings. Do you fly GA or Jets in MSFS? My little laptop (ASUS Gaming) with a 1050Ti GPU can ‘run’ MSFS in medium settings on a single monitor no VR and No TrackIR5. I get seasick with either TrackIR or VR. Most I could hope for would be triple displays for about a 140-degree FOV as I usta have with P3d. The A320 is quite a bit different from the B738 I had all the hours on in P3D. PMDG has been late to the party with their Boeing study-level jets :frowning: in MSFS. 2022 is latest ‘supposed to’ date for them via rumor mill. I am scared to run AIO water coolers due to fear of leaks and permeation issues. My old sim box had a 1090 Nvidia card and a 4-core intel K-chip running at 4.6 ghz on Noctua DH-14 Air Cooler. 4-cores was not enough though! 8 cores sounds about right. More than that you hit the heat wall. I will just live with what I have until video card / crypto craziness abates (if ever it does).

I feel your pain re video card/ crypto craziness. Gaming peripherals are also in short supply due to high demand inthe pandemic AFAIK so I am praising the Lord that my venerable Saitek HOTAS and pedals seem to be holding up. I would like to get multiple monitors too but just don’t have space in my man cave especially as I also WFH fulltime now. iPAD mini works very well as a secondary NAV display as its desk footprint is minimal.
I haven’t ‘graduated’ onto jets yet. I have a PPL for flying light sports aircraft so I have started with bush flying and am working my way up. Currently learning IFR on the excellent TBM930 improvement mod/ WT G3000 combo. Next step will be the WT CJ4 and then maybe the FBW A320

Yes, it’s wonderful to have an iPad for EFB duties and situational awareness! I run Foreflight and absolutely love it (overall). The approach plates lay right over your in-flight map, so you can tell all the way to the runway if you’re on the correct flight path (horizontally, not vertically). On precision approaches (ILS landings) this is very much a help. Also it has pitch and roll displays plus ‘synthetic vision’ to show if you’re headed into obstacles (trees, mountains, buildings, antennas, yada yada). (Note: Some features are available only at higher subscription levels). When you transition to jets, you will enter a whole 'nother level of complexity and checklists!
