Currently I have a 2080 super, an i5-10600k, and 32gb’s of ram. I use a Reverb g2.
I really want a clear and sharp looking cockpit when I put on the VR headset but I haven’t managed to get that without ending up with stuttering or really obvious object draw in. I’ve googled a lot of guides in an attempt to fix this but invariably I end up in an either or situation and mostly just stick to 2D flying instead. I had pretty much accepted this was just the way it was going to be.
Until today when I saw that I could get a 3090 for msrp or a 3090ti for only $100 more.
My question is will all that extra video ram fix what ails me without upgrading everything else (other than a larger psu)? I’m not really prepared to replace the cpu, motherboard, and ram on top of the gpu right now.
I would appreciate any insights that are on offer.
I think there’s a problem with the Ti version of the 3090 with the G2 v2 at the moment. If you wait for a 40 series gpu you may have to factor in a higher wattage psu. With the standard 3090 you’ll be limited by main thread on the cpu. If you’re thinking of upgrading the cpu slightly later, I’d wait for the 40 series. If you don’t intend to update the cpu, I’d go for a discounted standard 3090 (there’s nothing standard about these by the way).
Before you do anything check this out first. It’s a gpu bottleneck calculator. Too many people think that the solution is to get the fastest GPU out there. It also depends greatly on your CPU. Even in your current configuration, you’re not using all of your GPU capability because your CPU is too slow. As a result upgrading ram will not buy you much.
Also remember that MSFS is highly dependent on main thread which corresponds to your CPU. One idea is to plot an upgrade path in stages.
Stage 1 (You should see significant gain here. probably best at 1080p or 2k res)
i7\i9 CPU
DDR5 Ram (16 or 32)
Mid tier mb
use your existing power supply and GPU
also utilize dlss with su10
i’m sorry but i believe that site is wrong or does not apply to vr.
i have a 6 year old cpu (i7 7700k @ 4.5ghz) and a 3080ti. during gameplay task manager and fpsVR tells me msfs has the cpu at 70-80% and my gpu at 98-100%.
openxr toolkit advanced fps counter tells me it’s my gpu that is the bottleneck.
msfs dev tools fps counter says “gpu limited”.
Hi - This is good news then - if you are GPU limited with 7700 K - You must get good experience with this game - ? - You posted in one of my threads - Please remind us of the quality of your experience with 7700 K & RTX 3080 Ti
If the original poster GopherNuts has a 10600 K (which is better than 7700 K) surely a GPU upgrade would really help?
I have a good experience in with msfs with my pc and a quest 2 using air link to connect them. i get well over 30 fps at a high resolution (supersampling), the sim has good clarity and is (just about) reasonably smooth. i owned a varjo aero previous to the quest 2 and imo the quest 2 is 80-85% as good as the aero with msfs, at a fraction of the price.
yes, a 10600K is plenty good enough for this sim. for the OP, a gpu upgrade would yield greater results than a cpu upgrade.
(all imo of course)
ps even though my cpu copes ok with the sim, i must admit i am thinking about a new cpu later this year (when AMD Zen 4 is released). if finances allow i may buy a completely new pc with a 4000 series gpu, AMD Zen 4 cpu and DDR5 ram.
So I just got a 3080ti and installed it. I have an i7 9700 @ 4.8 and I am only getting about 40% GPU usage and 3 or 4GB/32GB out of the CPU. Any ideas there? Obviously it would seem I am CPU bottlenecked but even then I would think I could turn up rendering options to use more GPU keeping the same bottleneck right?
Its a pretty smooth 40-45fps though so not that I am complaining too much.
This was just the first run/first hour of running MSFS with the 3080ti.
yeah i seen you post earlier about it, i thought your gpu useage was low. how are you measuring it? i find fpsVR the most reliable but it needs SteamVR. with the oculus runtime i just use task manager.
you could check nvidia control panel to make sure your gpu is set to maximum performance mode (its called something like that) and check your pc power option is set to maximum performance. and yeah increasing resolution should in theory load your gpu more.
also if you are using ASW it will cap your fps and may reduce gpu load.
just earlier today i checked my gpu useage again and i’m getting 90+% and about 50+% cpu which is different to when i last checked it, so maybe it varies. sorry i can’t be of more help. but like you say you are getting good fps so maybe your true gpu useage is higher than is being reported…
can you hear the gpu fan spool up when using msfs? if so this would indicate high useage. you could monitor core clock speed (should be boosting to about 1900mhz) with overclocking software like msi afterburner. if it’s reaching about 1900mhz then it’s good.
I just upgraded my headset to G2 recently. And naturally couldn’t bare to under-utilize it with my 2070. Today i got a 3080ti installed and the difference is just out of this world. Ofcourse you already have a 2080 super…going after 3090 for its 24gb of vram is absolutelly unproductive. MSFS never utilizes even 12gb on the 3080ti. As far as performance goes, 3090 and 3080ti are neck and neck. If you can afford a 3090ti it’s a no contest for sure against what you use now. If you have some patience, wait for the 4000 series since the latest rumor point that even 4070 will have the performance of 3090ti. Not the amount of ram though, it’ll have 12gb. If you can’t, my advice is get a 3080ti. 3090/3090ti is literally throwing money out the window.
yes welcome to the never ending quest for graphics perfection in VR . it will never be achieved until computers get out of the dark ages imho . over the years i have spent literaly Thousands of $$$ doing hardware upgrades for little to no gain. so i will wait until Asobo have developed a code that wont require a CRAY supercomputer to run a flight sim in VR
ps Just my two bobs worth
PSS i still love the sim dont get me wrong
PSSSS i found the cheapest way to get good frame rates is to put LODterrain Sliders to zero
yes thats my point . Why SHOULD we continually have to spend ,spend ,spend i am over it . I will wait till we have nuclear powered computers.
meanwhile i will plod along with what i have
