Right? And all the manufacturers do it differently. Being a person who rents cars on travel quite a bit, it can be bewildering.
I was thinking about that exact thing when I read his post. When I bought my new truck a couple years ago, a couple of my non-negotiables were actual buttons for climate control and a volume knob for the radio (although the steering wheel volume button is a nice back-up depending what Iām doing).
Iām slowly warming to the G1000 in the sim, but the interface can be annoying at times. I just wish the purple was a shade brighter and easier to see.
Itās not that difficult if youāre planting your other fingers on the frame of the touch screen. That way the hand is āmoving withā the turbulence. Aggressive turbulence is another story but that makes spinning knobs difficult too.
Trust me, I tried that⦠Granted, it was not smooth air that day. But it wasnāt terrible either (Given I have the choice when I fly, I donāt enjoy flying in āterrible turbulenceā, and do my best to avoid it). And this was a little 430 sized touch screen, I forget the model off the top of my head. Maybe a larger one would be easier.
Be that as it may, I definitely prefer knobs in real life.
I wish trimming in the sim was better. Itās such an essential skill and so frustrating. Very few planes make it work well. Iām keen to know which ones people find easiest to trim out.
How are you trimming? It works great for me. I use the throttle on my Logitech X3D Pro as an -100 +100 trim axis.
Yes, if youāre using button presses, itās maddening. I believe the Honeycomb trim wheel is using button presses under the hood if youāre using that. A digital control of the trim canāt work.
Start list
- A2A Piper Comanche
End list
You can add the A2A Aerostar to that list. Trims perfectly.
I have both A2A planes. I feel like the Aerostar doesnāt trim quite as nicely as the Comanche. Maybe thatās realistic. The Comanche is an analogue control and the Aerostar is button based therefore Iām assuming less fidelity.
Yes, Iāve heard about RW flying + turbulence + touchscreens. I wonder if POPM can read the turbulence level and move the window randomly around the screen to simulate? ![]()
Apparently the G1000 has an add-on keyboard option. I wonder if thereās some way to rig up a touchscreen interface for this, even on a sim plane thatās not equipped with the keyboard? Hmmm⦠EDIT: I guess this was a legacy option for the older G1000 on larger planes, so not something commonly found. Though I think the Cirrus SR22 in the sim has one?
Personally I prefer knobs in both. I have a programmable mini keyboard that has nearly the same amount of buttons/knobs as the GNS530 does. Iāve got it mapped to every function on the GNS530, and i despise any planes that use touchscreen GPS, because for me, that means reaching for my mouse.
I have a dropped joystick w/extension as well, and my mouse/keyboard are quite far away from me (everything bound to peripherals, usually donāt touch my mouse during flight). I can whip through the GNS530 menus without looking at the controls I use to do so. If i try to grab my mouse mid flight, i will 100% mess something up as i have to lean so far forwards to grab the mouse that my trackIR puts my view right up against the GPS basically. Something like a modernized GNS530 would be so appreciated in MSFS imo⦠At the very least, it would be nice to get some mapping other than black on blue or the terrain map page (only red, yellow, i think & only below certain altitudes). I used to go back to the PMS50 GNS530 as it has a working cursor mode. Itās real slick to use the cursor to select a waypoint/airport then simply click direct to.
Thatās a bit off topic though⦠i will have a new list this month I think, but still making up my mind on which planes to put in it.
What happened to your Bonanza Improvement Project?
Iāve moved up to the Black Square Bonanza Pro, and Iām loving it.
Was literally about to get the Bonanza Pro and then the TBM went on sale and I thought thatās enough Blacksquare for you now ![]()
I wish I had your sense of financial restraint. I own 13. Someday I might actually fly them all. ![]()
My top two aircraft that trim the best are the Blacksquare Baron and the A2A Comanche. This is in MSFS 2024.
For some unexplained reason my Honeycomb Bravo trim wheel is behaving quite well of late. That was not always the case, so much so I stopped using it until recently. Iāve done nothing that I am aware of to adjust it. Iām guessing its to do with MSFS 2024
Fenix A320 ā My absolute favorite. The best developer. The A321 is truly beautiful.
TFDi MD-11 ā What could be more captivating than a sleek trijet heavy freighter?
Just Flight BAE146 ā Taking off from London City Airport.
Just Flight Fokker 28 ā Vintage aircraft always hold a special charm.
PMDG 777-300ER ā Boeing doesnāt get any better than this.
A2A Comanche ā The quintessential general aviation aircraft.
INI A350 ā A flyable A350.
PMDG 737 NG ā If only those few cups of coffee werenāt so expensive, it would deserve an even higher rating.
Maddog MD-82 ā Iām not satisfied with their upgrade strategy, so this is the best spot I can give it.
Just Flight RJ ā I donāt own it yet, but Iāll grab it during the next sale.

New years resolution was to try and fly more of the other aircraft gathering dust in my hangar, but it hasnāt happened so far
Will try harder for next month to hopefully get a top 10 in, maybe even a top 15 or 20
