Maybe you should stop flying that Junkers F-13 in the Bermuda Triangle :joy:

It should be the first thing you do as you taxi to the holding point, weave left and right and confirm the DG and compasses work as expected.

Whoa, I knew I’d done something wrong. Guess I’ll have to carry my cargo of MRI magnets somewhere else. Bermuda is really messing with my compass.

I guess I’ll need to clarify a little. Now when I said the compass is moving in the wrong direction I didn’t mean it is indicating an incorrect course. Let’s say I’m heading due south and the compass reads 180. Now I turn ten degrees to the left. The compass now correctly displays 170. But, and that’s what seems wrong with the compass in the F13, the 170 degree marking is on the wrong side of the 180 degree marking. On those floating ball type compasses 170 is to the right of 180. Charlie Fox gave a good explanation of why that must be. On the F13 the 170 marking is to the left of 180, like it would be on an HSI. So the compass ball, instead of staying in the same orientation relative to the magnetic field, actually rotates 20 degrees counter-clockwise for every ten degrees the plane turns to the left. Only then can it read the correct values despite the numbers ascending in the wrong direction.

Sorry for the confusing explanation. It’s not so easy to explain the movement of two bodies in space in words.

I kinda like that better, it’s always confusing when those wet compass cards start spinning in the opposite direction. I guess that might mess up everything they teach you about compasses though? Acceleration/deceleration error and Northern/Southern turning errors. But like @CharlieFox00 said, it’s not the compass card that’s turning, it’s the airplane turning around the compass card.

Initially I felt the same. I thought that it was a silly design choice that magnetic compasses went in the wrong direction. But once I’d stopped and considered why that was (the airplane turning around the compass) it changed from ā€œsillyā€ to ā€œcorrectā€. I guess my problem with the compass behaviour in the F13 is that it couldn’t work like this in reality. Who knows, maybe there’s some Rube Goldberg type mechanism with a tiny magnetic compass on the inside which turns in the correct direction, with a gear that changes the direction in which the outer shell turns. Something weird and wonderful like that to make it work inside my head.

They just turned it upside-down!

Being around boats a lot meant I never even noticed this was a problem…

That 100+ year old floating wet compass gives everyone a headache. But it would be interesting to fly cross country in all kinds of weather with just an old floating compass as the primary means of navigation in an old bi-plane like the mail carriers did in the early 1900’s. Maybe need to buy the Tigermoth to try that?

Well you know what I’ll say, right? Of course you need to buy the Tiger Moth! The compass is odd and unintuitive, but I love those peculiarities. Would indeed be cool to navigate with just such a compass and a map. Intend to test this soon.

In other news, the Got Gravel Mini-500 is such a blast! I absolutely love it. Haven’t flown her very far yet, but it was easy enough to learn the basics. I have nothing to compare her to as I haven’t tried any other helicopters in this sim, but from what I’ve read so far opinions are positive, and I can certainly see why. Glad that I pushed out my february list yesterday, otherwise the ā€œnew and shinyā€ Mini would surely be near the top of my list. Now I’m not saying it won’t be in the list next month, but at least I’ll have done my due diligence.

It’s fun, but you’ll end up not using the compass much & just relying on mapreading  even with head tracking it’s a bit of a pain to use. Not quite as bad as the backup compass in the Spitfire, though.

I have a growing collection of aircraft. Let’s see if I can come up with a top ten:

  1. Flying Iron Hellcat. I’ve been flying this a lot lately. This is a similar experience to the Spitfire, but a little easier. Great fun! It’s a plane that I’ve always had a thing for too. I love the big radial-engined fighters from World War II. We need a P-47, a Zero and a FW-190 (I hear that’s on the way) too. Anyway, this aircraft has great sounds, great handling and versatility too. I can take off and land from carriers, grass strips or international airports. It’s a great aircraft!
  2. IndiaFoxTecho M-346. This trainer is a lot of fun, and I really enjoy flying it. It has great visibility and looks good too. Like all IndiaFoxTecho aircraft, it has been continuously updated as well.
  3. Flying Iron Spitfire. I haven’t got the update yet (on Xbox), but it’s very satisfying to fly. If I can take off and land it without mishap, I feel like I’ve accomplished something. That makes the experience satisfying.
  4. Blackbird Beaver. This is my favourite real life airplane. This version lets me live the dream.
  5. FlightFX Hjet. I really like this business jet. This is as close to an airliner as I get. I usually fly VFR in a very uncomplicated way with most of my aircraft, but this jet pushes my boundaries. I admit, I’m not very good with instrument flying, but I attempt it with this plane. The developer works ceaselessly to improve and perfect it. It gets my vote for a top 5 aircraft.
  6. Carenado PA-34 Piper Seneca. This was my first third party aircraft, and it feels like home when I fly it.
  7. Carenado Staggerwing - It’s a lovely aircraft. It’s simple, but fast and fun to fly.
  8. IndiaFoxTecho F-35. You get 3 decent aircraft in one package. It’s recently had an update which really expands the features, and I appreciate that.
  9. Carenado C-170B. I use this when I want a short uncomplicated flight. This is another aircraft I’d love to own in real life. It’s a decent bush plane too.
  10. Inibuilds P-40F. It’s a little more forgiving than the Flying Iron birds, but it’s still a lot of fun to fly. The sounds are spectacular too, especially from the outside. It was also not very expensive, which I appreciate!

Zero is available here:

Ā£18 - reviews look good, check em out first. Haven’t bought it myself yet, top of my list though.
They also do a Me bf109.

Unfortunately, I’m on Xbox, so I can’t have it. :unamused:

Thanks for trying, anyway!

FI 109 was spotted in testing yesterday, so that is probably imminent.

Hope they get that DB engine sound and Kompressor whine right. Too many 109 sound like a Merlin Buchon.

Excellent, who’s it by?

My first top 10:
Wilga (GotFriends) What can I say? Perfect aircraft
Discus 2C (GotFriends) Best glider, tons of fun
Cessna 152 (JPL mod) Incredible mod, and gets better and better
Spitfire (FlyingIron) My choice for fast and challenging
C-310 (Milviz/Blackbird) Great own/rental options and sistem failures
Tiger Moth (Ants) Super detailed, love to fly this plane
LS4 (MADolo) My choice for a simple glider with good performance
DC-3 (with Duckworks mod) I love the DC3, hope it can get better in FS
Piper Arrow III (JustFlight) For some reason this plane feels ā€œrealā€ to me (I’m not a pilot, but still that’s the feelling)
Sting S4 (FSReborn) Incredible add-on. I prefer steam gauges, but still is in my top 10

FI - Flying Iron. I know they’ve said there’s a 190A soon too.
