Well, like others already said, there are deficiencies on both the 500E and the H125. In both cases, the texturing and modeling to me seem to be quite a bit below the best standards in MSFS. The rotors tend to look like chopsticks, and there is too much that is inoperative. The fact that neither has an autopilot and many issues and limitations are explained away by the MS/Asobo limitations, I think is cop out.

Specifically, the 500D is too twitchy (I realize it’s the Ferrari of helis, but it’s still too sensitive) and not that interesting to look at on the inside. The H125 is nice looking and the liveries for it present a nice variety, but the FM and capabilities on it are fairly basic. I am not surprised to read that it makes you feel like a good pilot - it feels really easy to fly, and that’s without any automation or stabilization! On lift off, the amount of tail rotor counter torque needed is too little and the sounds aren’t that great on it either. Again, I’m happy I didn’t pay anything near full price.

I know I mentioned it earlier, but the HPG guys present a stark contrast. They are actively developing the FM, changing the capabilities and they just re-introduced VRS. I think the only helis that have VRS are the H145 and the Mini-500. The H145’s feels a lot more natural than the Mini-500’s (for the life of me, I can’t get it to trip), and it will get you if you fly like many of us have gotten used to flying due to the all-too basic environment and capabilities offered by MS/Asobo. When you add the Missions stuff they have, it’s a whole other type of offering. They also recently made it a lot smoother to fly, finding ways to get rid of the MANY bugs/limitations of the sim’s FM that has made it jerky in flight.

The Alouette falls somewhere in the middle in everything I’ve said above. The base FM feels very natural and the updates that have come out for it have been well received. I enjoy having it and fly it whenever I want an older, slower flying heli.

So you don’t recommend the Beaver any more?

(I have removed your vote for it, but I will repeat – this ā€œmonthlyā€ charts is not about what you have flown this month. It is what are your favourite planes now. Doesn’t mean you have had to fly them necessarily. It’s if you still think they are good and other people would enjoy it, to help it rise in the charts).

Last month I posted an all-helicopter list. But like everyone else, I could not resist the call of the Comanche … So here is my list for July:

  1. A2A Comanche 250: Most fixed wing planes feel boring after flying helicopters. Not this one!
  2. Taog’s Hangar Alouette III: After the latest update, this is probably my favorite helicopter at the moment. Interesting to fly, great visibility, good interior modeling.
  3. HPG H145: The most complete helicopter in the sim by far.
  4. Nemeth Designs Schweizer S300CBi: On my system the small S300 flies like a dream. Please don’t blame me if it does not work for you.
  5. FlyInside 206B3: The most realistic helicopter turbine simulation in this sim.
  6. Shrike MD530F: Replaces the Cowansim MD500E on my list, because it is equally well made but less twitchy.
  7. CowanSim Bell 222B: The helicopter that feels a bit like an airliner in the cockpit. Poor visibility makes landing extra challenging.
  8. Cowansim H125: Solid, but not very exciting.
  9. FlyInside 47G: Still waiting for the big update.
  10. Asobo Cabri G2: The best option if you want to try helicopters without spending additional money.

Hehe nice. And back to the roots! Just don’t try and land it vertically

How I wish A2A would create a helicopter … But let’s see how the updated 47G turns out!

OK, understand. I still recommend the Beaver.

Last Month:

July 2023

  1. A2A Comanche 250 - Amazing mod with a great flight model and great depth of systems. This is the type of plane I like flying and it’s crowding my low wing GA hanger with it, the A36, V35, Arrow, Warrior, etc.

  2. Black Square Bonanza A36 - Still a great mod, but the Comanche is taking a lot of flight time away from it for now.

  3. Aeroplane Heaven Cessna 140 - This was at the bottom of my list and I thought I might have to finally bump it off my list when I added a new plane, but I’ve been really working on my tail dragging skills and I’ve been using this for my training.

  4. Got Friends Wilga - Another one that got a bump from my recent tail dragging work.

  5. Carenado Cessna 182RG - This is the one I was spending a lot of time with BC (Before Commanche)

  6. Just Flight Arrow - This was my favorite for a long time. It initially dropped off my radar while waiting for an update. It then took second fiddle to the A36 and it’s falling back again with the Comanche. Still one of the better mods out there though.

  7. Milviz 310R - Love this plane. Their recent update improved it, but the camera settings aren’t working and I haven’t taken the time to manually create new ones. Waiting for another update from them.

  8. WBSim Cessna 172 - Gread mod. Been using the C182 and C140 more though.

  9. Just Flight Warrior - Still love it, but don’t find myself in it very often anymore.

  10. Cessna 152 (WBSim/JPL mod) - Best free mod out there, but haven’t been flying it as much recently.

Dropped:
MS/Carenado Beechcraft Bonanza V35 - I have a feeling this will be back soon though.

I might do a Comanche World Tour at some point, but am on that Australia tour at the moment, which might take just as long since I’m flying so low and stopping at every airport in that plan. I’m using that GT Australia plan that’s on the Got Gravel Discord. Would definitely be neat to fly with somebody in another Comanche though, especially to help troubleshoot potential failures and such.

In the interests of fairness, I flew the Alouette around for a while again - latest version is much better. I got back in my 500 again though & well, at least my 500 with some slight inertia twiddling ( I can’t remember the out of the box one very well - I didn’t just pull these out of nowhere tho ) just has better flow, although it does still try and roll right a little sometimes. I think the Alouette will get there though.

Yeah, despite being Carenado, hence it crashes if you open windows and the breakers and half the switches are inop, it has a sort of unique charm that draws you back in. Much like the real thing back in the day.

A little revision is due… Picked up Fokker F-28… What can I say… SWS Kodiak has to go into honourable mentions. The little Fokker is impressive. The inclusion of an option for GNS530 places it just above the Bae146.

I nearly bought it today but then I flew more of my Euro tour instead. I just know that the nanosecond after I buy it, it will go on sale  Wasn’t it already on sale once before?

No problem, will update tomorrow

You know the 146 has a proper if limited FMS, right? its a heck of a lot easier to use than a 530, thats for sure… of course now the proper FMS will turn up & we won’t have a clue how to use it :stuck_out_tongue:

Er… maybe? I think I got mine from fs.to, experimentally. I’d maybe wait for another ujpdate for it, it’s getting there but it isn’t actually there.

Yes, I fly with the FMS, but the advantage of 530 is you have visual representation of where the hell you are.

Lol, that’s all the fun of it! it’s also a good reason to use the radio nav ( just for location tracking rather than actual navigation in this case ), keeps you nice & occupied.

I did spend a while getting used to being effectively blind, but if you keep a chart around it’s easy enough. I guess having done a lot of sailing in pre GPS days might help a bit.

The issue with that is the MSFS NAVLog is useless because it doesn’t provide frequencies… It’s a lot of work to find all the frequencies for the VOR beacons on your flight plan.
