1.29.25.0 DX12 TAA - GPU VRAM usage increases with Terrain LoD increase

As Terrain LoD increases, VRAM increases.

Intel ARC GPU A770, 16GB

4K, DX12, TAA, Render Scaling=100, VSYNC=on
Xbox Performance Statistics

T=Terrain, O=Object (set in UserCfg.opt) 1=100, 9=900

  LoDs CPU RAM GPU VRAM FPS

T=7 O=9  7% 34% 65%  97% (15.5 GB)  20 VRAM=99% while flying

For each entry, UserCfg.opt edited with T LoD value
and then set to Read Only.
FS2020 started, loaded the same saved Flight Plan and read
the statistics while sitting on the runway ready for takeoff.

Vram usage goes up because that’s where scenery gets loaded. Higher LOD = more scenery.

Yea. I never could see this since my GTX 1660 TI only had 6 GB.

Nice upgrade, once all has settled let us know what you think.

If you join the beta there’s a little more leeway for mainthread limited so I now suggest calibrating 500-1000ft above difficult scenery and try to match mainthread and gpu render times. On the ground you will lose a few fps but it should stay smooth.

This is really nothing new since SU5. You can actually max out the VRAM on a 3090 by setting the LOD at 6 in certain dense areas.

I actually posted about this a while back:

I’ve noticed that the Windows Display Manager VRAM size is about 1/3 the size of MSFS VRAM which is significant. I don’t know why it would be using so much. There should be some way to configure it or limit it.
