i have not found a setting to auto-start either. i am guessing youâll need to add something manually to start the application with windows. there is a setting to force as to the sys tray automatically so i would probably recommend that if you end up starting it with windowsâŠ
Ah cool, I didnât look in the Warnings tree yet! Thanks!
Must say you can tell HiFi have been at this a while. Itâs very refined and feature rich software considering the limitations in MSFS. They really maximised everything possible and seem very on the ball with feature tuning.
I like supporting good developers even if I donât use the software as much as others would (e.g. BATC).
If you use Addon Linker you can specify programs that you want to launch with MSFS when you launch it via Addon Linker. I would launch as few programs as possible during Windows bootup. They slow it down and unnecessarily hog resources while unused. And if a program has exploitable security issues itâs just another needless hole in the wall.
I canât do that because I already need to launch the sim via another app (XP Force). I just know I will forget to start this before the sim for the time being so I would rather it start automatically (like HeliManager) as the PC is really only for the flight sim, Iâm not bothered about resource hog as I will be using AS until I decide not to
So to switch back to Live Weather, can I just change to Live Weather in the sim and leave AS open? Change the MODE in AS also? Or do I need to restart the sim to swap?
You leave the weather preset to Clear Skies and when you want to switch back to live weather you do so within ActiveSky FS. Change Sim Depiction Mode to âPassiveâ.
This will use live weather but still use ActiveSkyâs other features.
I happened upon a prime example of how the methods between Live Weather and Active Sky Preset Control differ. I immedately made recordings to demonstrate. From my video description:
A little example of how the methods of MSFS Live Weather and Active Sky Preset Control can lead to vastly different results: in Live Weather you can see clear skies in one direction while dramatic clouds loom in the distance looking in another direction. With Active Sky however, the sky is clear in every direction, because the weather was clear at the aircraft position. Even if there had been clouds, it would have been unformly the same in every direction, all the way to the horizon until youâd travel to another zone where the weather might be different.
If youâre happy with Rex WeatherForce youâll really enjoy ActiveSky. It does what Rex does, but much better, isnât hard on the FPS and has extra features.
I shelved REX quite awhile ago when the in-sim weather improved as the pitfalls of Rex were no longer worth it. I do use ActiveSky now though
Noticed since SU15 (I think, didnât notice it before) when the weather changes (I guess on the refresh duration which is 15 mins by default?) I get a pretty horrendous series of stutters for about 4 seconds.
Not every time maybe, but it could depend on if Iâm in an already more demanding scenery area. Need more flying & testing to confirm a pattern. Anyone else?
I actually did the opposite. I got REX WF when released and shelved it not too long after due to incredibly poor FPS and transition rates.
With the advent of FG I broke it back out and have been using it 95% of the time. It still looks better than Live Weather (but to be honest, Live seems to be improving a lot recently).
Like others, I have not purchased AS but keep thinking about it. In your opinion, speaking only from a visual perspective how do REX and AS compare?. I.e. is AS substantially better than REX, about the same or worse, if you donât mind me asking. Thanks.
i own both. i too, purchased rex very early on and also shelved it very quickly due to numerous problems. i have reinstalled it a handful of times over the past couple of years just to see if it improved and (on my system and in my opinion, it hadnât) so i uninstalled it. i tried it again a few weeks back before buying activesky and was still not satisfied with it.
in terms of visuals, i would say theyâre closeâish. i like the clouds and atmospheric stuff in rex and as much better than stock weather. if youâre happy with rex, i am not sure as buys you a ton. thereâs some added flexibility with historical weather and i really like the turbulence effects in as, but ymmv
I havenât used REX in quite awhile so I canât speak for how it is today, how I remember it though visually, they are similar but Iâd give a slight edge to ASFS.
ASFS Also has historical weather if that is your thing (REX has been promising that for years, not sure it was ever delivered on?).
Hurricane depiction in ASFS when Hurricane season comes, Wake Turbulence, CAT, Cloud Turbulence and everything is customizable from what I recall, REX was pretty locked down in that aspect.
Navigraph integration as well as Simbrief, Audio ATIS for departing and arriving airports that you can tune to and listen.
Thank you (and you too scoobyx). I will probably go ahead and dive in, probably due more to the fact that near as I can tell REX has not updated WF in a long time and may no even be supporting it any longer for all I know.
