As soon as I bought my 172 my flights are crazy. Sometimes my plane make a 180 turn while parked without wind. It is like it has a life of its own.
Not only that, while taxing sometimes it just hit the wings on the ground as if it was winding 70 knots. It did not happen once while in employee mode, just with my own airplane. The plane is totally fixed without any problems.
I don’t know when this changed but I had an interesting thing happen today.
I just had a hard landing to end a cargo mission and broke the landing gear and blew a tire on my C208.
The Mission Steps instructions were to stop the aircraft. (First time I’ve seen this.) After I did so, the Mission Complete dialog appeared and I was presented with the post-mission assessments. Cargo integrity was 90%, but I scored -13% airline procedures and the other criteria scored poorly as well. I went from an S reputation to somewhere between a C and B.
I made money on the mission, but lost money overall due to needing repairs.
Anyway, botched landings during missions generates appropriate results. Yay!
Next thing I’m looking forward to is a proper pre-flight weather briefing, so I don’t fly to a field with a crosswind.
Took a medium cargo flight with the Courier into this airport without prechecking:
The airport no longer exists in real life, but even more, in the sim the runway is only about 1000 feet long whereas the original had a 2400 foot runway. It seems even shorter because they crammed it in between two busy city streets. Guess I should have checked that in the EFB.
Anyway, the Courier can stop on a dime if you can plant it just above stall speed. I came in just over the trees and cars at a little over 90 knots, and threw on the reversers just before I touched down. I hit hard just shy of the runway, but it didn’t count any damage. I even stopped half way down the 1000 ft length, so I didn’t even have to push it that hard.
Not sure if I like it more than the Caravan yet. It’s got much higher performance and doesn’t suffer the mechanical bull rides on short final and roll out. But it won’t put your flight plan into the G1000 for you, and I’ve had trouble with the autopilot losing tracking or not getting the glide path, and lots of other things make it seem like it’s simply incomplete, so it’s definitely a trade off.
Can you manually input the flightplan into the G1000? or are you simply forced to follow the blue brackets?
You can do it manually… I think. I kept getting double entries of the fixes as I entered them, but maybe that was user error. Lots of users report the inability to tune or swap the radios, or properly enter a squawk code, so you know, the plane is pretty janky. But as long as you can just “Press Enter” to have it done for you, it works. I’ve completed a number of missions with it already.
I also realized pretty quickly how tedious and seemingly pointless it is to enter all those fixes into the Garmin manually, when I could just clear the flight plan in the EFB before the mission starts, and then only put the destination into the Garmin and fly there VFR direct. The mission is perfectly happy with you doing that as long as you go through ridiculous charade of getting VFR flight following, an IFR clearance, and then canceling IFR after take-off.
Then you can just happily cruise to your destination with your feet up on the panel, and nobody pesters you again for the rest of the flight. Not realistic I know, but realism went bye bye as soon Career Mode launched.
“Guys, can we just unload here? …Guys? …Hello?”
“Don’t mind me, just taking my Sky Courier to do some shopping at the mall”
That’s hilarious! I’ve had some bugs here and there, but yours seem to take the cake…
Welcome to the party.
I can recognize that. What I did recently is to start flying medium cargo in Austrailia with the PC-12. I hav’t seen a single mission yet with IFR. All have been VFR from start. Not many clouds at all, but winds can be a challange.
Runways have been generous in length as well. So go to Austrailia in winter - no need for IFR yada yada…
Here’s something I’ve noticed, but maybe I’m missing something. I’ve been flying cargo missions with my own company in a C172, but it doesn’t seem like the cargo weight affects the aircraft’s performance. Is weight actually being added to the loadout for these missions? The plane always feels light and gets off the runway quickly, so it makes me wonder if this is working as intended…
can we use our add on planes in career mode?
Not yet and probably never. ![]()
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with career mode.
the concept is fun, I love having a ‘purpose’ to fly and the progression (company).
but once you pass your IFR (which I did way too early), its just too ‘punishing’.
(as someone returning to f sims after a long break)
yes, you can check weather, but its not reliable, and is very time consuming - and sometimes there simply aren’t freelance missions you want to fly, without (potentially) bad weather conditions.
and failure, with company planes is too punishing - bad insurance, crashing = another grind fest. makes the risk/reward ratio too punitive.
Im sure if you are a really experienced flyer it’s ok, you can handle the high crosswinds etc, but is this really the target audience?
are those of us newer to sims, suppose to return to free flight to ‘get gud’
(perhaps if employee missions paid a bit better, then these might be more useful to continue to learn?)
perhaps they wanted to make it challenging so it could be played by more experienced simmers.
thats fine, then there needs to be ‘difficulty levels’, like other games.
easy/medium/hardcore - so the punitive stuff (and grind) can be lessened for those starting out, and then hardcorefor those that want/need the challenge.
this would also, like other games, give a replayabilty aspect - beat it on easy, now try on hardcore/permadeath ![]()
really its basic game design.
in single player games (as this is) - you give players choices, so they can decide how they want to play they game.
but for now Im kind of stuck…
each day Im excited to play, further my career… but each day get frustrated, as I cannot find missions that I want to do, and feel I dont have a high chance of crashing my planes - so end up not flying, or aborting ![]()
(ofc, I didnt mention, bugs killing your mission… but even there, if career was less punitive, Id be okay with these too, for now at least)
I’m exhausted. Yesterday, I finally got out of career mode when the 208 was blown away on landing by a light wind. (before that, I had CDT 2 times). I’m not going back there again until this piece of meaningless computer code is completely redone. I’m going back to NeoFly.
C208 is a broken aircraft. I believe that aircraft repair should be the main task of the developer. It is impossible to land С208 because it does not have a low-throttle mode.
After the last patch, it looks like the CJ4 was fixed up (other than flickering textures) and it was fine in the short free flight I tried. I’m debating getting it as a company plane in career mode once I get the VIP charter specialization to make it available.
I know your first 172 company plane can be bought steeply discounted and used. Does that discount apply to whatever plane you buy first, or just the 172? I ask because one of my thoughts is to just grind until I can afford the CJ4 as my first company plane if it would be able to get the discount. It’s one of the few aircraft I actually want to fly, which is my reasoning for this.
And yes, I’m aware of the current possible bug related to no/limited CJ4 missions availability. That will play into my decision, but I’m still a ways away from buying one anyway if I actually go through with it.
If you are talking bout low and high idle with the condition lever - it definitely does work as well as going into reverse thrust …. I am using the Honeycomb Bravo throttle quadrant and pretty much used the same mappings as in 2020. Some good YouTube videos on setting up turbo props for 2024.
Oh there’s no intent behind this. They haven’t even begun that feature yet, you know like a basic feature any video game would have. In their haste to get this product out the door, they just started mashing features together. So now you’ve got this bizarre mix of first timer friendly features like doing a single trip around the pattern inside the blue rectangles, coupled with extremely overdone weather effects creating landings that are way outside the aircraft’s limitations. Career Mode is the wild west right now.
I agree 100%. In any category or mission type, you should be able to pick one star to five star flights that are actually representative of that flight. You want to fly medium cargo 30 nm between two 8000x150’ runways on a calm clear morning in Florida? One-star, knock yourself out. You want to engage nightmare mode? Ok, now cross the Rockies and put it down in a suburban parking lot with hard IMC (a flight I actually got yesterday). Five-stars, here’s your bonus, achievement, pin for your profile’s uniform and referral letter to the FAA disciplinary board, congratulations.
Someday maybe.
Yeah they’ve made quite the drug alright. Increasing cravings followed by increasingly bigger life regrets, and the vicious cycle continues.
Lucky you! I can land the C208 on most missions now, but with heavy XP penalties. I don’t like seeing my performance rated at “C”. Some penalities I can understand, but others seem unreasonable or harsh.
Getting the 208 down is like learning to ride a wild stallion for sure. One trick I learned was to put the condition lever to low idle before landing, which is counter to the checklist and real life. The turboprop makes too much thrust if you don’t. Another trick is to use the G1000 wind display to make sure you’re landing into a headwind. It’s the only reliable weather info I’ve found so far. If you come in with high idle and a tailwind, boy oh boy, you’re in for a fun one.
Can you delegate the radio to the copilot with an assistance option? That should definitely be a thing if it isn’t. On most of my takeoffs I’m busy trying to not hit a canyon wall or stall the wobbly bobbly Caravan, meanwhile the simulator is impatiently tapping its foot waiting for me to contact Center. Just give me a minute! Jeeze.
This should not have any effect in flight so not realistic. It should only affect the ground idle RPM.
