Just been experimenting with sim update 5 and finding I can now go to ultra settings which is great (always been on medium), but there is a price to pay: although I’m over 30 fps the scenery doesn’t slide past as smoothly to my eye, and also my GPU is at 100% all the time and fan is making so much noise. Conversely if I stick with medium settings it looks smoother and GPU happily chugs away in the 80s.
I’m used to capping framerates (usually 90-144) on my G-Sync monitor in first person shooters, but happy to opt for Ultra settings over higher FPS in MSFS (VR, is another issue…).
I even got 10 FPS in one area full of photogrammetry addons. But with 32 GB of RAM it still went smoothly. Even very low FPS are fine as long as there no stutters and no FPS spikes.
Thanks all, I might need to look into some quieter cooling for my GPU then because the noise is REALLY loud at 100%.
Perhaps FPS is a red herring, and I need to stop looking at that number and just try different settings and judge the smoothness vs detail. The test I do is a fast turn in a small aircraft in external view - which causes the scenery to quickly have to shift sideways - testing this in both rural and city environments.
GPU is supposed to give you stable desire FPS for as low power as possible. Not ramming 100% all the time with high temps and big power consumption.
In case of MFS it’s 30 fps.
You can mute the engine sound from the sim, and have the GPU fan become the engine sounds… Lol… Are you planning to change GPU or rip apart the cooling and install a different one?
Good point, I have the Radeon RX 5700XT and there is probably no way to change the inbuilt fan. What about changing the main PC fan - or the case itself for one with more fans and vents. Or is it the case that a GPU running at 100% will always also have its fan running at 100%?
Usually you can manage this if you have the overclocking tool from the GPU brand. you can manage fan speeds under certain load. But if the GPU is running at 100%, then it can get hot really quickly, that’s why the fans kick in as well. But usually Fan speed is not looking at GPU usage, but more on the temperatures.
So, keep your case clean from dust bunnies, make sure it’s well ventilated and airflow can move freely into and around the case, with a good cooling and airflow, that should keep the GPU temperature under control, and therefore fans will run quieter.
We had had some extremely hot days recently and I was concerned that while on long flights things might get too hot. So I bought on Amazon one of those clip on fans. Middle size that even can be recharged from a USB. I use it to push extra airflow around the PC. Very quiet and three power settings. It does the job. Heat output from the PC is notably lower. But it’s only used when outside we are in a heatwave. These fans cost less than 15 pounds/bucks.
ULTRA visuals and maximum eye-candy and maximum rendering distance only is my priority.
FPS are highly overrated because every game runs and feels 100% fluent when having 30-40FPS.
Interesting, what kind of flying do you do? Because I definitely notice the difference when capping my FPS at 30 vs 60 (assuming graphics settings low enough to allow well above 60fps uncapped). I fly a lot in external view to admire the scenery, and doing some tight turns it definitely looks smoother at 60fps than 30. I’ve settled on compromise cap of 45 fps.
Is what I’m observing directly due to the different FPS, or are there other factors at play here, that are a consequence of capping the FPS?
