5800x3d or 7800x3d?

Hi,

I know there are already hundreds of similar topics been discussed, but I am curious about your opinion and recommendation in my specific scenario.
At the moment I am running MSFS on win11 I7-10700K, DDR4 32Gb, RTX2080 Super, 1440x3440 native resolution.

With the existing setup I can achieve 30-40fps on complex airports with Fenix (PMDG is better), I have all graphich settincs High/Ultra, LOD 90, and all traffic is 0. By increasing traffic on Vatsim (ie.on an event) the fps can drop in the range of 20 on the ground.

The system is mostly CPU limited, but very close to GPU limit. → there is no real benefit to change GPU by keeping i7-10700k.

I plan to upgrade and would have two different path:

  1. Dead End: now the price of 5800x3D and it’s Motherboard is dropping as the new 7800/7900 series is coming to the market. It is clear 5800x3D is the last AM4 processor, but it has a very impressive test results, especially for MSFS. I could keep all of my components and maybe on the savings invest into an RTX 3070/3080 GPU. I think it would be a pretty good value for the money and I would be good for about 3-4 (?) years.

  2. Wait for 7800x3D and invest into AM5 platform, including new DDR5 RAM, new PSU, but in this scenario I would need to keep RTX2080 Super for a while…

(3). Be happy with the existing results and do not change anything

What would be the clever step? :man_shrugging:

Hi
,

I would recommend you to opgrade to the 7 5800X3D… I have an RTX3090ti and had the R 7 5800X (standard).
my gain was something impressive in terms of stability and high FPS.. for now I would not recommend the AM5 … many here are using the RTX 4090 with R 7 5800X3D, they are saying it is the best configuration for MSFS..

Thanks!
Are you planing to change to 5800x3D? You would only need to replace the CPU and as I can see that gives a significant boost. We are usually anyway CPU limited, so it would look a logical option for you. (of course if you are willing to spend about 300USD on the CPU

I already did the upgrade, it must not have been clear, but I said in the post above that I had the 5800x and switched to the 5800X3D and my gain was absurd.
I sold my old 5800X, saved a little more money and got the 5800X3D… do it and you won’t regret it! look for videos on YT and you will be as impressed as I was when I upgraded!

ah sorry, now I got it

7800X3D appears up to 38% faster than her older sister, how that translates to FS, we won’t know for sure until it releases. I have the 5800X3D and rather than being gutted, I’m actually quite happy as that uplift just says to me, “my upgrade future.”

In your case, either way is a platform upgrade, mobo etc, I’d probably just upgrade to AM5 but be prepared for a shortage as the 7800X3D will likely be the most popular.

thanks.
I think as well it will be not so easy to put a hand on a 7800x3D after release.

In case of upgrading “only” to 5800x3d, I can still sell my i7-10700k+mobo, so initially I would spend only 2-300CHF (USD) now on the part what I would need to replace when I change to AM5 in the future. Than now I could upgrade the GPU what for sure would keep for the future AM5 platform

The biggest fear of mine is the reinstall of MSFS and add-ons, also buying win license with each iterations

I’m happy with my 5800X3D but I upgraded from an earlier AM4-based CPU.

I maybe wouldn’t recommend doing a cross-platform upgrade to AM4 when AM5 is sitting right there, but it’s honestly a legit trade-off to buy in cheaper now with easier-to-find parts and do a big upgrade to AM5 later when you’re not fighting the early adopters.

I did virtually the same upgrade just last weekend, after weeks debating. I had 10700k and 3070. Ultimately it came down to 5800X3D motherboard bundle at Microcenter was a steal and I didn’t want to pay nearly double for AM5 which I’m hearing people having BIOS/performance issues. I really wanted future proofing but I ultimately looked at it as “what will I gain from where I am.” And that has been answered after upgrading to 5800X3D, the results are pretty dramatic. I can run many ultra settings now with A32NX and FSLTL and stay above 30FPS (1440p). It’s also VERY smooth, bad stutters like before are gone, though it does have micro stutters still which I suspect is more on MSFS than the processor. And the money I saved is going right towards a 4070ti or 4080. My vote for you: save money, get a significant upgrade in the process and don’t look back. Upgrade to AM6 in a few years

I am in the same situation. I have everything except mobo/rams/cpu. I was totaly sold on 7800x3D but more i read about AM5 more i am shifting to AM4 with 5800x3D, cheap mobo and 3200 rams. Altogether for half of the price of whole AM5 set.

I will wait for some benchmarks if there will be some noticable uplift against 5800x3D in cpu bound titles on 4k.

Right now AM5 is sh*tstorm. Many problems with bios, memory training and compatibility

very tempting… :smirk:
the 3070 GPU you kept? is it a good match for the 5800x3d?
I know the 5800x3d can’t be overclocked, but does it still require a massive water cooling? i was reading the recent AMD CPUs are producing less heats compared to similar Intels.
If I go with 5800x3d then I can upgrade my 2080 Super, but 40xx series is stupidly expensive. I was thinking i a 3080 which is still crazy price wise, but hope that can serve me for many years to come. I only do MSFS, so if that runs smooth that is fine for me

This is essentially what I did 4 months ago, except a 10850K and I had a 3080 then, and it gave me a substantial boost in scenarios where I was previously heavily CPU bound. eg. In a scenario I set up at LEPA Rwy 23 where I previously did a group flight in the A310, Broken Clouds Preset, high graphics preset, FSLTL traffic (produces 11 parked AC), TAA, 75% of 4K ~ 1440p UW, I was getting 33 FPS with my 10850K. Nothing changed except 5800X3D and motherboard FPS went up to 60 FPS, my TV’s max refresh rate. Bumping resolution back up to full 4K still gave me a solid 50 FPS.

I also recycled my 32G DDR4 RAM and 240mm AIO cooler which kept the upgrade cost minimal.

I was able to swap my motherboard and CPU (and later GPU) without having to reinstall windows and without having to pay for a new windows licence.

3070 is great match, I get CPU limited normally when lots of AI Traffic around me but mostly GPU limited under normal scenarios, which means still room to grow. 3080 or 3090 should still get you even more. If I wasn’t considering multi monitor down the line I wouldn’t even be thinking about a new GPU. I use a 240mm AIO liquid cooler for the CPU and I’m using Kombo Strike through the BIOS which is supposed to optimize performance and temps, I usually observe 65 C temp, sometimes briefly hits 70 and drops back to 65 which I think is pretty reasonable.

Whatever you go with I would recommend something with at least 16gig of Vram as the sim loves lots of Vram, especially with DX12. You might even want to consider an AMD based gpu with your 5800x3D. You can now get a RX 6800 w16gig Vram for less than $500.

yes, I am looking GPU with 16Gb. by the RAM size the price of GPU is increasing exponentially :money_mouth_face:
I was thinking also in AMD cards, but I never had one before. Recent generations seems to be very competitive compared to NVIDIA, but looks they need more power and generating more heat, also lacking behind Nvidia concerning ray tracing (which should be irrelevant for MSFS - as I read on reviews)

Today’s options (one of the GPU), prices in CHF which can be translated to USD 1:1. RTX 3080 I found only with max 12Gb for about 900CHF.

i recently updated to 5800x3d plus 4080, 3600 cl16 ram, excellent performance in 4k or VR, great combo

That power supply might be a bit on the small capacity side for a 4080 (I know mine calls for a 750W min and my previous 750W PSU died within two months of putting in a 4080).

I suggest at least an 850W PSU, like I have, to give you a bit of headroom to run a 4080.

thanks for the info, will adjust then

Looks like a good list you’ve put together. Like @ResetXPDR said, you should upgrade the power supply. I have an EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G6 850 W 80+ Gold Certified. Not the cheapest ($160.00) but well reviewed. I see max current draw for my system around 650W (MSI B550-A Pro, 5800X3D, RTX 3090 Ti, the other stuff is the usual.)

Intending to go the AM5 route myself (for future proofing) with the DDR5 ram and the new 7800x3d cpu (maybe).

But, yes, I’m seeing quite a few issues too especially with ddr5 ram speeds, compatibility and bios. Might be due just to bios or possibly memory controllers on the new MBs

I suppose it’s to be expected given the platform is still fairly new not to mention expensive. I’ve now decided to hold off 'till June for any further gremlins to come to light. At least then the 7800x3d should be readily available and ddr5 ram and AM5 MBs might actually come down a bit in price.
