First, I want to think all people that are sharing info for performance.
Situation :
I’m playing actually in gamer laptop and want to move to fixe PC as I struggle to play (max 6 fps for some places and airports with only texture in ultra).
Many uncertain decision to make as I know that GPU depend a lot on addons, monitor and CPU.
Please note that I will build the pc by myself so I will buy each compound alone. It will be my first experience, a lot of pressure .
Below information that are helpful :
Current Laptop MSI (3 years old) : i5 10500H, RTX 3070 6 go, 16 Go Ram
Addons used when doing each flight : FSTL, GSX pro, pushback toolbar, FBW (including Simbridge), weather in live, navograph, youtube if needed for cold and start videos
Aircraft used : Concorde, A310, FBW 320Neo, Antonov, HWD A330 neo (has issues with drop of FPS over UK), CS777 ER & F, A330 aerosoft in the future
Target for graphics : TLOD 400, ultra, 1600p & 4K, TAA, no FG no DLSS (blurry cockpit issue)
Target FPS : > 60 in 4k
Some examples of used aiports : LFPG, EGLL, EGKK, EGPH, OMDB, WSSS, KLAX, KSFO, KJFK, EHAM, EBBR, EDDF, LTFM, RJTT, ZBAD, FACT, EDDM, YSSY, NZAA
Expected fixe PC :
CPU : 7800x3d or 7950x3D. While 7950x3D use 1 CCD for gaming (so 8 cores from 16 cores), the 8 cores 7800x3D are fully used and perform better. I let you comment on it.
GPU : 7900xtx, 4080, 4090. Take in consideration that I don’t expect to use VR for coming 2-3 years.
Resolution targeted ; 2160 but I may not find a monitor, at least 1600
Monitor : MSI curved MEG381CQR (1600p Oled), Gigabyte M32U (4k) or Samsung G8 Neo (4k), Alienware AW3423DWF (1440p QD Oled). Can’t decide yet, depend on GPU and in the future 2 monitors. Best sim experience wanted.
RAM : 2x16 Go Corsair Vengance RGB 6000 MH CL38
Case : Corsair 4000 x air flow RGB. I hope that it can fit ATX with 4090 (if it’s final choice)
Water cooling : Corsair H150i elite LCD XT RGB
Power : corsair 80 plus gold 850 x (7900 xtx or 4080) or 1000 x (4090)
Motherboard : B650 Carbon wifi or Tomhawk. If 4090 and 9750x3D, do I have to move to X670e ?
SSD : Samsung 980 pro 2 to
Thermal paste : Corsair XTM50
Please support me based on your experience and share some screenshot. The aim is to support all the community not only me.
Without addon, I would take 4080 without hesitation, but FPS drop so fast, that I can’t make bad choice.
1. CPU : 7800x3d or 7950x3D? While 7950x3D use 1 CCD for gaming (so 8 cores from 16 cores), the 8 cores 7800x3D are fully used and perform better.
Not sure what your feelings are about FS2024, but if I was building a new computer today, and wasn’t going to wait for the next gen CPU’s, I would get the 7950X3D. I base that on the assumption that the new sim will more fully exploit multi-core, multi-thread processing.
2. Target for graphics : TLOD 400
Setting this that high is absolutely hammering your CPU. There’s really no need for it. I used to run mine at 250, but have learned that 150 gives me a great balance of fidelity and performance.
3. Case : Corsair 4000 x air flow RGB. I hope that it can fit ATX with 4090 (if it’s final choice)
You should have no problem fitting most 4090 cards in that case. Be careful, though as there are a few manufacturer’s cards that exceed the 350mm length limitation of that case. The card will fit, but the power cables may not. Check out this compatibility page.
Personally, I would go with the Corsair 5000-series case (in fact, I did when I built my system.) It’s not that much bigger, but a little extra room is almost never a bad thing. I love this case.
Hello
Thanks a lot for your useful feedback.
I personally, for instance, not interested in FS2024 as I have to find time to really enjoy FS2020 first.
For CPU, I do agree with you, but I’m afraid that it will lead to more expensive motherboard.
For TLOD, most benchmark put 200 close to your recommendation.
Good to know
Agree with @BegottenPoet228, TLOD of 400 will stress your CPU for the aircraft and scenery you intend to use. TLOD of 150-200 is plenty for a good balance between visuals and performance when airliner flying.
TLOD of 400 is great for slow GA flying in the ‘backcountry’/middle of nowhere.
Personally, I think you should go for the GPU that has the most VRAM that you can afford. Developers don’t seem to care that their 4K (or even 8K) texture file sizes are swamping GPUs with < 12 GB VRAM. The combination of 8K textures on your payware airliner, 4K on FSLTL AI traffic aircraft and 4K on a payware airport scenery, suddenly makes for a worrying situation when using DX12.
Monitor resolution plays a key part in what GPU to buy. If you are serious about 2 monitors, you need to recognise that means the GPU is having to push a lot of pixels, something only the very top GPUs on the market can achieve.
One final point, the 980 Pro drive had a firmware issue. Just check the manufacture date to see if you may have a problem. However, it is fixable. Watch this video: https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/DoAFzdz0h5M
I read again all comments on CPU choice. I still can’t decide as some people said that they don’t have issues with 7800x3d running both fs2020 ans add-ons while others struggle.
For sad, all people in Paris oriented me to crucial and Samsung 970 Evo or crucial. I just need 4 gen and at least 2 To but don’t have expertise on efficiency of other brands rather than Samsung.
For monitors, do you have any advise ?
For GPU look that I’m oriented 4090. Still CPU to define.
Wow, you’re really expecting a lot from your hardware. Those airports you’re listing will bring almost any system to its knees, or at least bring it to its limit, especially JFK and New York City.
And please remember, too, that a 4090 laptop card is very different from a 4090 PC card (and that goes for all nVidia graphics cards). They are the same in name only. A desktop will perform much better.
A 4090 Laptop card is better than a 4060 Laptop Card, but, I would never expect from them the performance of a Desktop processor.
Hello
Thanks for your feedback. I saw a video of a test of 4090 and ryzn 5750 working smooth but with low FPS (arround 30).
I know that i ask a lot for future PC, that’s why i take time to be sure.
It will be a PC not laptop.
I have a 500GB Samsung 980 nvme and a 1TB 980 pro.
Now bought a 2 TB 980 pro and will change it for my 1TB(that one will go to replace the 500GB), they’re at a really good price Amazon.fr
Real solid performance.
Don´t get SSDs anymore nowadays. They are obsolete. Get NVMe disks which are like x10 faster. MoBo has to be ready for them in that case.
TLOD 400 will hurt any system as soon as you go into a city or dense area at low altitude. Don´t expect more than 30fps in that case, at least with current game version. TLOD 200 still hurts indeed but I would say that´s the absolute min as anything below that looks horrible.
Hello
thanks for feedback. According to all benchmarks 7950x3D will not perform better than 7800x3d as it has 2 CCX (only one with 3d cashe). apprently, the CPU can’t give full performance to the game and can create some latency. do you agree ?
For 4 k motior, 42 is too big for me as I will have small place in my appartment in Paris (I wanted initially to go to samsung G9), but I can have 4k oled for cheaper. I’m more and more oriented to Corsair 32UHD 4k.
Hello to all you
As promised, this is my final config
CPU : 7800x3d
GPU : msi 4090 trio.
Monitor : Asus ROG g sync comptabile 3840x2160 4 k. Amazing
RAM : 2x16 Go Corsair Vengance RGB 6000 MH CL30
Case : Corsair 5000 d airflow.
Water cooling : Corsair H150i i cue air flow
3x120 i cue link air flow in front
Power : corsair 80 plus gold 1000 w
Motherboard : MSI B650 Tomhawk.
SSD : Samsung 980 pro 2 To + 1 To
Thermal paste : no need as it’s included in cpu water cooling
FPS is 40 to 55 in airport with all addons working (vpilot, navigraph and fsltl) and reach 70 in cruize level with ultra config, TLOD 200, DX12, TAA
Let me know iof you need some pictures witrh specific planes and specific areas. I will take them by chance.
I absolutely LOVE my Corsair 5000D. It has a few cable management quirks, but overall it’s the best case I’ve ever used for a build.
DDR5-6000/CL30 sounds like blazing fast RAM!
Great motherboard.
If I’d waited for AM5 I would have picked the 7800X3D. I love my little 5800X3D.
I probably would have gone with a 1300W P/S, but you should be OK with 1000W.
As for the thermal paste… Not sure what you mean by “Thermal paste : no need as it’s included in cpu water cooling.”
I assume you mean that paste came with the H150i AIO, so you don’t have to buy any. If so, great! I hope it wasn’t a thermal pad. Those things are a terrible idea.
I’d like to see some metrics as reported by CPU-Z HWMonitor when you’re flying the friendly skies: (CPU and GPU thermals, power, load.)
Let me know which airport and zone to cover for picture.
It’s thermal paste that came with AIO indeed
For power supply they recommend 850 watts so I took more security with hx1000i who is platinium.
For RAM I don’t even use it at full power, only 4800 MHz as I did a mistake with bios by overlooking before updating motherboard.
But it’s expo model, so I will do it again wit more safety.
