9800X3D 21% faster than the 7800X3D - 1080p highest + Turbo

Before the release of FS24, I thought absolutely had to upgrade from 5800x3d to the 9800x3d, but the reality is that despite all the issues with ‘24, the CPU utilisation was a very substantial improvement over FS’20.

Sure, I still fancy the 9800x3d, but for me is more of a nice to have than need to have thing at this point, and considering all the investment not just on the new CPU but also moving to the AM5 platform, I’m not so sure it would be a wise move.

Of course all this is relative. Someone with a 4090 and higher expectations would think differently.

I ended up grabbing a 9800x3d and an ASUS ROG Crosshair 870e Hero. Probably either CPU would be an upgrade from my i9-9800.

I was 12900+4090+DDR4 32GB, so my options were 14900+new mb + DDR5 vs all new AMD, going AMD was a cost penalty of £160 but I figure Intel LGA1700 socket is end of life, still a question mark over 14 gen bios, so I’ll be going the AMD route even tho the 9800x3d doesn’t appeal to perform any differently compared to 14900 as of today. Note I’ve yet to check the 0.1% lows, which I will,do at the weekend

I have a 14900KS which I have running at 5.9 Ghz all core with DDR5 8400. The 1% lows in MSFS2024 are much improved over 2020, although admittedly I’ve never actually logged those numbers.

However, if I were in your shoes, I’d definitely go down the AM5 route considering LGA1700 is dead and the 9800X3D is still the top performer for MSFS2024.

Same here – I’m sticking with my 5800X3D as it’s pairing well with my 7900XTX in 2024 in the flight areas and planes I like (roughly even claiming Main Thread vs GPU limiting, which is the balance you want), with a significant reduction in frame drops/stutters vs 2020 even with everything cranked way up.

The 9800X3D would still give a modest bump in frame rates at my typical settings, but I can’t bring myself to shell out a thousand bucks on the full upgrade package. :slight_smile:

The one thing that puts me off to Zen 4/5 is the heavily bottlenecked infinity fabric. The infinity fabric is limited to 32B/cycle read and 16B/cycle write per CCD. At FCLK 2000 on a single CCD, the read bandwidth would be limited to 64 GB/s, which is far below the max theoretical bandwidth of DDR5 6000 MT/s at 96 GB/s.

Imagine the performance implications once they increase the infinity fabric bandwidth. That’s what I would be looking forward to with future Zen lineups.

For those who use msi X670E tomahawk the bios has been updated:

  • Latency Killer supported for Ryzen 9000 series CPU.

Using 9800x3d with X670E tomahawk:
Overclock @5.4Mhz
Enable PBO - Matherboard limits
+200 Mhz offset
Scalar: 10x
Curve optimizer: - 15
Core temperature 60°/62° with aio be quiet silent V2 360 running MSFS 2020.
I’m tempted to put @5.5Mhz

BIOS with AGESA 1.2.0.2b for my MSI MPG X870E Carbon WIFI motherboard has been available for download since November 21, 2024, which is a week earlier. It’s easy to see that newer motherboards take priority – it’s a bit sad.

Here are the key changes in BIOS for my motherboard:

7E49v1A1A (Beta version)

  • AGESA ComboAM5 1.2.0.2b released.
  • X3D Gaming Mode supported for Ryzen 9000X3D series CPUs.
  • Latency Killer supported for Ryzen 9000 series CPUs.

It’s also worth mentioning that the BIOS versions for both your and my motherboard are in beta.
I am currently testing almost the default settings and haven’t noticed anything wrong so far.

  • MSI MPG X870E Carbon WIFI
  • Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • RTX 4090
  • 64GB 6000 G.Skill (2x32GB)

depends what setting you run at, at 5120x1440 (almost 4k in pixels) max setting and 400/200 lod my rtx 4090 is my bottleneck, my 7900x is fast enough to give all my gpu needs, might be difference when upgreade to the rtx5090 though, time will tell

Im reading about people getting great perfomance in games, but some stutters and a sluggish Windows with 9800X3D.
Is this something anyone here have noticed?

  • Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC with driver version 566.14 (without GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App)
  • 64GB G.Skill 6000 MHz (2x32GB)
  • Windows 10 Pro

I have no issues with this configuration.

Not sure if this was already shared on the forum:

MSFS 2024 performance analysis / comparison on various HW (GPUs and CPUs) at various resolutions / settings.
This includes 9800X3D and its predecessor 7800X3D, among others.

Of course, these results are likely to evolve as new sim patches are released, it’s a snapshot of the current state of affairs according to THG.

It actually makes sense. Older motherboards are already stable, newer ones need updates to get stable.

No need to upgrade from 7800x3d to 9000 series x3d.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D clearly has lower temperatures compared to Ryzen 7 7800X3D - this is a huge advantage, which has been and continues to be incredibly important to me. On top of that, when you factor in its performance, it’s an even more compelling choice.

How to disable it?

In MSFS2020 general options>data>rolling cache>off

That may be so but 7800X3D runs quite cool itself. It’s one of the reasons I went AMD over Intel. They’ve obviously managed to tweak it a bit more. I would suggest that would not be enough of a reason to upgrade. There of course may be other reasons. New build sure but upgrade may not be worth the bump for the dollar.
