This might be a confusing title, let me explain. I was looking for more purpose in flight sim, having generated missions and a goal. APL2 gave this, it was amazing. I grinded out many flights. Then I finally made it to captain and I could take 5* airlines (I am with All Nippon right now).
But before APL2, I just flew wherever I wanted. Europe, America, Asia, didn’t matter. Obviously with APL I am stuck with a schedule.
But if I now do a flight outside APL it feels like a waste, which is so silly since it’s my hobby. But I am still not where I want to be with APL (like having both the 777 and A350 licence). For example doing a long haul flight, I would never really do them or I would use time acceleration, but with APL I feel like I get rewarded for doing a long flight and it does feel so rewarding to do a long haul in real time while getting those numbers in APL on a freaking imaginary paycheck.
However I am very burned out from APL.
Is there anyone who feels this as well? Being sort of split between “I want my flights to have a purpose and a reward” and “I want to fly wherever I want”?

That’s actually perfect timing, because I was just in the process of creating my own schedule as an Alaska Airlines captain based out of Seattle. I had previously loved to fly anywhere, but it was getting boring and I wanted to have a set schedule. Well, here’s the flip side. I was aware it could turn monotonous, and I wanted to avoid that. So now I’m thinking half-half? What do you think about flying once a week on schedule, and another time wherever and whatever I feel like?
Yes, actually. For me it was grinding to Senior Captain in NeoFly4. Now I’m a little burned out on that career, but free flight seems less meaningful.
I started a new career to get me back into GA planes, but I’ve lost interest in that one as well.

I think there are a lot more of us with the same issue: trying to find a balance between flights having a real goal but not being too stringent that it becomes too tedious. I am trying a different approach at the moment.
I’m using OnAir with all my GA aircraft whch lets me fly where and how I want and am also trying Newsky for the larger planes (anxiously awaiting PMDG 737 and CRJ).
I guess I’ll see if I’m headed in the right direction in the next couple of weeks.
I use both NF4 and APL2. But I also create my own ‘missions’
I’m currently flying an original flight from Chicago around the world (East) in the DC6. I’m also part way through Amelia Earhart route in the DC3.
And when I fancy a mix of GA I’m landing at every UK county and another every US state.
Just to mix up GA which I love and airlines that are growing on me.

I think if NF4 allowed a little more control over which airports you could fly to on regular missions (there is a “free flight” option which significantly reduces rewards) I would regain some interest.

I’m definitely not flying airliners outside APL unless I reeeaaaaalllyyyy want to do a particular route
But, that’s not stopping me from other types of planes - you can’t take a tube to some smaller airfields, you can’t just stroll at a smaller speed down low and enjoy the view, heck I even tried gliding, janky as it is. I can do a Chengdu-Bangkok in a 789 one day, then tour the Lithuanian countryside in a VL-3 the next, much less burnout that way
