A short review of MSFS 2024 current state after 14 months of updates and bug fixing

So, approximately a year ago, I made a thread about how the poor MSFS 2024 release almost made me quit sim flying. I had very high expectations, some of them my fault, some of them promoted by all the featured aspects in pre release media. All of this expectations were met by the crude reality we all know.

While I haven’t stopped sim flying, I do it with a lot less passion than before. I don’t browse possible hardware addons like before, I don’t have any significant expectations like before, I don’t eagerly wait for new releases, even my beloved 757. I don’t participate in forums or discord anymore, or if I do -like now-, it’s very scarce. Heck I don’t even look at things like rudder pedals or flight sticks. The yoke is literally a paperweight:

So, I’ve been doing some flights after each SU release, and I wanted to make a short recount of my biggest complains as to what I feel these days, having done some flights in the last few days.

My first significant issue, is that after more than a year after release, most of my preferred airplanes haven’t seen any significant bug fixing. I prefer to fly turboprop airlines, and both, ATR 42/72 and Saab 340B, are broken as in the first day. I fly in real time, which means night. The ATR still has that unknown source interior lighting, and the lights in Saab 340B still don’t work. The exaggerated reflections, even over instruments that aren’t lit by a given light, hasn’t been fixed and affects all airplanes. Just spawn at a parking spot and see how the lights from the vehicles reflect on the edges of a gauge, even if the gauge is dug in the bottom of the cockpit (can record a video of this, of course). The Twin Otter still has issues, some have been fixed, but they’re still there.

ATC, my biggest second issue, still has significant drawbacks. If I’m given FL100, then ask for FL70 while being at FL50, ATC asks me to “climb FL100 and expect FL70”. Reaching FL70 and staying there just triggers and indefinitely amount of “expedite your climb to FL100” requests. Yes, the loop about reissuing the flight plan has been fixed, and the ridiculous requests about climbing while on final have apparently been fixed. But after a year, I did expect something better, more even considering that it was said several times that the ATC was going to be fixed and an improvement over FS2020 issues. Even the issue of the ATC windows not scrolling correctly is still there (though less than before)

Third issue, is that liveries are scarce and far between. This isn’t directly MSobo fault, since they don’t create liveries, but apparently, for creators it isn’t that easy to migrate liveries from 2020 to 2024 (I’m no expert or creator, I’m just saying what I’ve seen commented). I’m flying these days without any of my preferred liveries since creators simply don’t want, don’t have time, or don’t find anything that motivates them to develop or port liveries for MSFS 2024.

Fourth issue, is that still the sim has those unknown random crashes and small bugs around. The web planner is still missing airports that actually exist and are in missions. The lighting issues mentioned above. The issues when loading airplanes. They’re not as frequent as before, that’s true. But it has been 14 months since release.

Fifth issue, and back to stock airplanes, is the amount of bugs that plagues them. I understand that stock airplanes might not have the same depth as studio airplanes, but “not too much depth” doesn’t mean “bugs”. The Inibuilds 320/321 AP has several times gone crazy. The 737 made the sim crash several times after 20 minutes of setting up a flight.

Sixth issue, game design and features. The highly promoted online schema that “allowed MSobo to fix things” was a promise that quickly vanished, after all, we still have to wait for SUs. The highly promoted missions, are still unavailable outside career mode. Career mode itself still has bugs. Bush flights are still absent. The Red Bull events are even less attractive than Reno races, which at least had the thrill of having the rest of the airplanes in flight. They are as boring as any other weekend activity. It’s almost a prowess to make a Red Bull event just as boring as any other activity. Oh, and flying with friends is still a miracle. Connected to the same server, everything correct, then I see my wingman, he doesn’t see me. Go to main menu, come back, and now no one sees noone. Come back, and we see each other for 15 minutes and then plane disappears but user tag is still there. Nice.

So, what’s the way I found to enjoy MSFS 2024? When flying airliners, by using it as a container for third party apps. Fly the Fenix or any other well regarded third party airplane, use BATC or something else third party for ATC, use custom third party airports, and disregard everything stock. And when flying GA or VFR, just enjoy the improved graphics when you’re close to something interesting (far away, still looks bad, the Andes looks all rounded for example). For the rest, it’s a deceiving experience.

Personally, I don’t think this should be the case. We should not depend and spend on third party apps simply because stock doesn’t work. We shouldn’t spend to “patch” the stock features because they’re broken. A feature should work, not be still bugged after 14 months.

It’s a shame. All I can do is have some hope, but after a year without significant fixes to stock airplanes, without basic issues sorted out, with dev reports saying that thousands of bugs are fixed but somehow overall game experience isn’t significantly better, I do feel taken as a fool.

Let’s see what time brings. I did expect things to get better within a year, sadly this wasn’t the case. Is it better? Of course, release was a tragedy and as I said, there have been improvements over time on certain areas (graphics are no doubt better, night lighting is nicer than at release, ATC does work better, etc.). Is it what was expected after a year? No, not at all, for all the reasons I mentioned above. I do hope things still improve, but I don’t know what to expect anymore, or if having expectations is itself a mistake.

Usual disclaimer, your experience might vary. I know that for many, the sim is fullfilling their expectations, is quite OK, and for what they do, it’s fine. I’m just giving my point of view.

Cheers and good flights!
Seb

I will differ on your first point, in that I think it’s pretty easy to just find a new plane to love and fly. It’s indeed unfortunate that those aren’t fixed yet, but I think it’s much more important to fix core issues first - something I’ve mostly been quite happy with.

As to the second issue, I’ll agree it’s unfortunate, but you know what? I just started ignoring ATC and my life got much more fun and easy. Now when I want to land, I do ask permission, get it and land. But if it tells me to go around a 2nd time I land anyway flipping the middle finger at whatever airliner thinks he’s more important than me. It’s a simulator, not real life

There’s SO MANY liveries! I wonder if your preferred planes are semi broken perhaps, and that’s why there’s none? It’s too bad either way and I sympathize.

No crashes for me in many months. The few I have run across were all addons. I have to say I think the program is pretty rock solid myself and any crashes are likely on your end, but I can’t speak to the web planner.

I 100% agree with your fifth issue. While I think they should certainly prioritize core issues, some of those planes could be rendered flyable with a very small amount of effort. I still am glad I didn’t get the Aviator edition and I think it’s despicable that they sold it for a $70 upgrade (over Premium edition) when almost all of the planes are either totally unusable or semi broken. It really was kind of unreal.

The Red Bull event thingy is very popular. I don’t do it myself, but I think classifying it as boring is kind of self centered and doesn’t consider the fact that others do enjoy it. I too wish bush flights were back as well. I loved them in 2020, but there’s decent work-arounds that are in some cases better - such as Bush Talk Radio.

I think we all agree that the launch was near catastrophic. Most of us would agree that knowing or not, they did outright lie to us about a lot of things pre-launch. If they did know, it was false advertising at a minimum and if they didn’t know, it was carelessness. But I think they’ve come a long way and improved a great deal in the last year. If the sim had been launched in the state it is in now, I’d have been fairly happy (assuming I didn’t purchase the Aviator edition).

I agree with most of your points and thank you for your opinions on the issues, the one I quoted in particular needs addressing during the next Q&A - Why don’t they release hot fixes for the most blatant issues that could be and should be fixed far quicker than having to wait X months for the next Sim Update especially when it’s something Asobo broke (again)? Why was this changed?

I suspect because too often hot fixes break something else. They have a habit of breaking things with updates too. But you can always sign up for beta, then you always have the latest “hotfix” if you want to call it that. It’s usually an improvement.

i’m bothered a lot by bugs, but after SU4 i have since uninstalled 2020 and im trying to give career another shot…

i find the current state quite usable. there are bugs but i have literally 0 crashes

i run a vanilla sim, a debloated windows installation and de-tuned cpu and gpu, maybe that has something to do with it

the things that bother me the most are aircraft that look like they are just abandoned, like the atr for instance, that’s just so sad, and also carryover bugs from 2020, like wasm crashes and frozen cockpits

about career, even though im not really the guy for it, i can see that it has potential. the huge, huge problem i see with it right now, is the apalling lack of aircraft variety, i think if that was adressed it would/could be a really interesting feature

Well said! And I agree 100%.

The sim is great now for GA, can’t really comment on airliners. It’s very stable, performance even in VR is mostly acceptable (apart from a lot of photogrammetry, where it can still be awful), and it mostly looks pretty ■■■■ good.

I wish there were more high quality ground textures though, and that road traffic looked better.

I feel like a broke record on this. But I really miss some proper AI traffic with atleast some decent ATC. The way FSX used to be. ATC wasn’t perfect, but it got the job done fairly well. And the offline ai traffic was easy to work with and modify. It also behaved fairly well. The default traffic is horrible and the ones added by the ATC addons also behave very strange. They look like they’re on rails. Additionally, I want to create AI traffic and inject it like we used to. Not have to be limited by what these companies tell me.

I also add on several aircraft that have not been worked on. It’s a pitty the 2020 Aerosoft Twin Otter was removed from the market and replaced with this default thing we have in 2024, instead of working on it to improve an already decent (ish) plane. That’s just one example. The tueboprop simulation of propeller ranges in general also leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree on most points and I also expected development to go much quicker. I guess it’s also matter of resources.

There’s just so much content to maintain; There are 95 planes in de premium deluxe version, 99 if we include the 4 make good planes, and while this amount might work in a game like Forza, I think they (MS/Asobo and 3rd parties) are having big difficulties maintaining a fleet of this size, let alone a ‘game’ of this size. They are shifting resources all the time to make gradual steps forward and this process seems slow.

I do really enjoy the sim right now but that is mostly because of good 3rd party products. I think that in the past 4 sim updates they made some significant ‘under the hood’ progress and made it a better platform overall.

If we’re talking about msfs2024 as a standalone simulator/game there’s still a lot of content that isn’t up to par or simply isn’t finished yet.

I’m pretty confident it will come in time but don’t be surprised if it takes another year or two. In the meantime they will add new features as well. I just hope they will aim for more finished features overall.

Quite the contrary here. I’m a IFR, SE, ME pilot who has flown a variety of planes, including a couple of turbo-props and jets over the years. All my sim flying is done in free-flight mode with comprehensive flight planning and starting from dark cockpits. I try to do it just like I do when I’m in an actual plane and the experience is ■■■■ close to the real deal in many planes/scenarios. I’ve flown MSFS since day 1 in the early 80’s. The development of the sim has been amazing to watch.

For me, MSFS2024 was a bit buggy out of the gate, but over the course of the past year, I’ve either researched and fixed the bugs myself, or have found third-party solutions that make the product better, such as planes, scenery, ATC, camera modes, etc. To me, tweaking and adding to the sim is as much a part of the hobby as actual flying and I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Can it get frustrating at times? Sure, but 95% of the time, I’m having a ball.

I’m quite pleased with the progress MS has made, particularly in recent months. SU4 was a game changer, and the new NVIDIA drivers are leaps forward compared to just several months ago.

I think it’s important to remember that for most of us, this is the closest we’ll ever get to real piloting and the sim + add-ones on a decent PC do an amazing job of replicating that experience - all for a price that wouldn’t cover 3 month’s of expenses in an actual SE airplane.

Could it be better - sure. However, I’m pretty grateful to the folks at MS for providing such an amazing experience.

Yes, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head when you said this is the best way to use the sim.

I’m back after six months and I quit previously due to frustration, but I’m suprised to say I’m really happy with what I’ve found on my return.

My three “magic” third-party ingredients are: Quest 3 VR headset, A2A Comanche and Beyond ATC.

I’m using these assets purely to do my own thing (world tour) and ingnoring the rest of the sim. I have experienced ZERO crashes, everything is rock solid, ATC is working great and I’m enjoying long, immersive flights where the “sim” isn’t even apparent to me, I’m concentrating on the plane, the instruments, navigation and the view out of the window. This is how it should be and I’m enjoying it greatly, apart from the VR ‘hangover’ I get from long flights in the goggles!!

I think Microsoft has made far too much “content” in the sim - aircraft, services, career mode, etc, and now it’s caught up with them. There is a cascade of issues that flow from this:

  • Fixing any aircraft or service often requires contracts with several 3rd party developers, but lots of bugs fall in the gaps between those contracts and never get noticed or fixed, due to the shear quantity of aircraft
  • Even if a developer can see a way to fix some bugs, Microsoft must deem the bugs worthy and commission the fixes, and this creates long delays, or contracts expire, etc
  • Changes to the SDK (such as the new progressive LOD system of MSFS 2024) trigger a need to update a lot of aircraft and scenery, which changes priorities and the budget that would have gone to bug fixing or finished features, improving depth, etc.
  • It puts Microsoft in an odd position of competing with the developers it should want to attract to the platform.
  • With the aircraft fleet having expanded rapidly from an initial 30 in MSFS 2020, to over 130 now, who would dare to invest years of time and money in developing a plane already on that list - even if they know they could make it better
  • Addons like BATC, Say Intentions, and GSX have shown what ATC and Ground Services can be on PC, but rather than figuring out a pathway for the platform to allow such addons for console, Microsoft will spend time and money on the in-house versions (no doubt borrowing lots of functionality ideas), which ultimately won’t be as good as the 3rd party addons, but will work on console.

I’m enjoying MSFS 2024 SU4, for the first time since launch, but only because I moved to PC, which allows me to run a few 3rd party addons, and skip most of the rest of the first party aircraft and services.

I would much rather see a leaner MSFS, which had 30 choice aircraft done really well, to show off system depth, and demonstrate all the optimizations of the SDK for developers to learn from. Maybe they could “marry off” part of the fleet to developers with careful contracts that ensured improvement on an ongoing basis, but also allowed developers to charge for an update, as incentive. I would rather see a platform where innovative developers can come up with better ATC, Ground Services, Career or Mission ideas, and have a pathway to integrate with the sim on the various platforms.

Right now, the surface area of content that requires work is huge, and as long as each “new thing” is chronically incomplete, buggy, and then after a while pushed aside for the next “new thing”, I have stopped looking forward to the “new things”. I would really like to have the focus remain on improving quality, rather than quantity.

Decisions at Xbox Game Studios (Microsoft Gaming) dictate everything, and that means seeking growth on a wide array of hardware. Great, but I fear the “platform” aspect of MSFS is now a “niche of the niche” as someone wrote here on the forum.

The one thing that does give me hope, was the announcement that MSFS was working with Boeing for training. I would expect Boeing would demand reliability, and better support for surround visuals (multiple monitor or multiple projector), and force feedback, etc. All the things I hope for while I’m seeking a more immersive experience.

Great updates, but here is some critical feedback regarding Career Mode, Logic, and Immersion

First off, I want to say that the recent updates are great and have changed a lot of things for the better. The sim is heading in the right direction. However, there are still several areas that need improvement to really polish the experience.

Here is my specific feedback:

1. Critical ATC Logic Error in Career Mode

I am encountering a severe logic issue during approaches in Career Mode. While established on the approach (sometimes as low as 1,000 ft or 2,000 ft), ATC will suddenly instruct me to climb to FL390. This completely ruins the flight and the scoring for that career mission.

2. Immersion & Graphics (Sunshades & VRAM)

Sunshades: The window sunshades currently do not cast shadows in the cockpit. Adding this dynamic lighting interaction would add a lot to the immersion.

VRAM System Notification: The “VRAM exceeded limits” notification is very intrusive. It breaks immersion immediately. It would be better if this was a background log or a subtle indicator rather than a large notification that obstructs the view.

3. Copilot/AI Behavior (CRM Implementation)

The current “AI Copilot” needs a significant overhaul to function like a real Pilot Monitoring (PM). Currently, it feels robotic. A realistic copilot implementation should focus on Crew Resource Management (CRM) and assist with high-workload phases:

ATC Communications: The copilot should be able to fully handle the radios—acknowledging instructions, changing frequencies, and requesting clearances—allowing the Pilot Flying to focus solely on controlling the aircraft.

Systems & Lighting: The copilot should manage aircraft systems upon request or by flow, including operating external lights (Landing, Taxi, Strobes) and internal panel lighting during the appropriate flight phases.

Workload Management: Instead of just “taking the stick,” they should help with the Flight Control Unit (FCU/MCP) settings (dialing in speed/heading/altitude) while the pilot flies manually.

Context-Aware Callouts: We need standard callouts (e.g., “Speed,” “Sink Rate,” “Localizer alive,” “Glideslope alive”) based on the phase of flight.

4. Career Mode Flexibility (Liveries & Ground Handling)

Livery Support: We need the ability to use our owned liveries in Career Mode. If I have a livery installed in my Community folder or purchased from the Marketplace, I should be able to apply it to my career aircraft.

Ground Services: Please return ground services to Career Mode. Furthermore, for those of us who use advanced tools, integration or at least compatibility with GSX Pro is essential for realistic ground handling operations.

5. Third-Party Aircraft Support

We need broader and more stable support for 3rd party aircraft within the new systems.

I hope the team can look into these points, specifically the ATC approach bug and the VRAM notification, as they affect day-to-day flying the most.

Thanks for the hard work!

For me, SU4 was initially very good.

But after a week or so, I got crashes / freezes when either selecting aircraft or configurations.

I have carried numerous ‘repairs’ but the problem is still present.

In addition, the market place and managing aircraft in the Community Folder are both awful.

I would like a system to stop seeing aircraft / scenery that I am not interested in and have no wish to stream or install.

I do not get notifications when updates are available.

I have no way (that I can see) to not have functionality displayed that I have no interest in, i.e. the ‘gamey’ elements - this should be optional.

Like another poster commented, I would like a lean and efficient installation.

However, I think FS2024 looks and flies well - hopefully, it will not be replaced just as it finally meets all of our expectations……

I haven’t bothered using FS2024 (or any other sim for that matter) for the last 6 months if not longer. I just can’t be bothered about it, I eventually found my self hitting ALT + F4 whenever the first bug would pop-up (making flights lasting no longer than a few minutes).

I heard SU4 has improved a lot, I still haven’t found the motivation to try it out and I’m unlikely to do so in the near future. Even with bugs fixed, all the flaws are still there, ATC, AI traffic, unrealistic career mode, lack of atmospheric effects etc.

I thought it was PMDG working with Boeing. I didn’t know MS was as well.

For me working AI Traffic is essential. And I solved this using FSHUD. Work as in P3D.

I think that’s a really good assessment. I don’t think I could enjoy it on console either. I admit sorta taking for granted everything a PC does. But that’s why I won’t ever have a console. It won’t do 95% of what I need.

MS/Asobo do too. They probably wouldn’t have Boeing aircraft without it. They just make them to a vastly different standard than PMDG which appeals to a completely different audience.
