A very basic question about Rudder Pedals

So I’m diving in with ignorant enthusiasm on Xbox launch day next way. I though I’d do it ‘properly’ and have picked up a T.Flight HOTAS and some Rudder Pedals (that itself was an amusement which I’ll relate at the end).

So, the basic question.

When I push the left pedal forward I turn left. Really? I thought it would be like the flight stick where the direction kind of works the other way. I though by moving my left food forward, I’ve oriented my body towards the right meaning I go right (not left). I’ve been practicing pre-launch-day on Star Wars Squadrons, and that’s what it does. Left foot forward = turn left.

Can I confirm that’s correct in MSFS, in which can I’ll suck it up and get used to that being how it works. :grinning:

As a final thought, I couldn’t find Rudder Pedals in stock anywhere. But I reasoned that the T.Flight pedals would work with the T.Flight Xbox stick even though the online product information I saw for an in-stock set only said that they worked on PC and PlayStation. Took a gamble that they had the product info wrong and I was right. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Really. Pushing the left pedal forward deflects the rudder and hene the tail or nosewheel to the left.

Since the wheelbrakes are also mounted on the rudder pedals, it would be very awkward if you push down on the left pedal/brake and the aircraft would turn to the right

Topic moved into #self-service:peripherals for further discussion and advice.

Ah, posting in the wrong place. Sorry. Got it. :grinning:

Left pedal forwards → plane turns left, or yaws to the left in the air,so yes, it’s correct. I always think of it like I have the rudder between my feet on a pivot, so when I push in one direction it deflects behind the foot going forward. I’m not sure that’s a good way to explain it, but it works for me

To me it feels more natural to push the right foot forward to turn left, so I have reversed my rudder axis in control setup. I know this is not correct - but each to his/her own!

Happy flying

That’s a very weird way of doing it.
Good that you don’t have brakes on your pedals and I hope that you are never going to try to fly an aircraft IRL.

@RodosMike, That was exactly my initial reaction (and I realise I can map it that way). But I thought coming new to this I should learn to do it “properly”…

Thankfully @PZL104, the likelihood of me doing this ‘for real’ is almost exactly equal to nil…

Excactly. Especially if you are spending extra money for realistic rudder operation!!!

It’s just a matter of getting used. You train the wrong direction.

Not too weird - to turn a car left you move your right hand up (or forwards)?
My brakes are on my pedals and work normally!

I say again I realize that for aviation I am wrong!

So to turn right on the ground and to tighten the turn, you push the left pedal forward and apply the brakes on the right pedal at the same time?
That requires a lot of coordination

I know of someone who cannot play a first person shooter who cannot play unless the vertical is reversed, pushing the mouse up to look down. I guess they just got used to that.

Admittedly not a “skill” transferrable to the real world.

Last posting on this - to turn right I push my LEFT pedal forward and if I needed to tighten the turn would press the brake on the RIGHT pedal.

Good that the OP wants to learn the correct way!

Cheers,
Mike

If this thread is the fine and helpful response I get to a ‘basic question’ around here, then I need to buckle up if I ever ask a complicated one.

The responses are appreciated.

@SofaJockey i asked a question once on here in a different thread and my thought was WOW not helpful in anyway at all ,was just shot down for asking a question, as a noob and old guy, nervous to ask anything else …lol

I would expect most flight simmers to use a reversed vertical axis. Particularly those who were flying desktops before the FPS ever existed. Forwards is down and vice-versa.

In this case these are gamers, not simmers.

First time I ever got the chance to fly was way back in the early 70’s flying with my uncle in his airplane. I was about 12 and got to ride in the right seat. After explaining how all the primary controls worked on the ground, he let me fly straight and level when cruising for a while. After a few minutes, I took my feet off of the rudder pedals … I knew what I was supposed to do, but for the life of me I couldn’t remember which way round they worked.

Every single one of us starts out either in flight sim, or in the real world with ZERO knowledge. The only dum-b question is the one that doesn’t get asked. You will always find a few who like to respond in a condescending and dismissive tone … says more about them than anything else.

My uncle said I’d done great flying the plane. Guess he’d been helping me way more than I realized at the time. Just like that - most people here are pretty helpful too. Keep asking those questions folks!
