Ability to See Your Aircraft on the Approach Charts in EFB

I wanted to make a suggestion but i’m not sure where to post it so i’m doing it here, as we all know we can view LIDO charts on the EFB which are very helpful, we can also see our plane’s location on the SID, STAR and approach charts. However, this feature is not implemented in ground charts. I think it would be really helpful to know where our plane is while taxiing especially on VATSIM. I’m surprised this feature hasn’t been added yet. Anyone else who noticed this?

I have also noticed this and it would indeed be extremely helpful to be able to see the aircraft position on the ground on the EFB chart

You can get more info on the reason why this isn’t currently possible on the Working Title Discord server, where this topic has come up several times in the flight planner channel. The source data for ground charts doesn’t have necessary information to make this possible. Navigraph I think does their own custom solution that’s not available for MSFS. Maybe there’s a wish-list item to do this, but I would guess it is a heavy lift that requires a lot of development and money.

Neither provider (LIDO nor FAA) provide georeferencing data in their ground charts, so we cannot implement that feature at this time.

It’s not really a question of development; if the providers’ charts had the georeferencing data, it would already be functional. But without that data, we simply have no ability to implement this ourselves.

Does this mean Jeppesen charts are georeferenced?

I think the proposal is more to create detailed airport maps that appear when you zoom into the EFB map like what Navigraph provides which is separate from the georeferenced airport charts they provide.

(Forgive the format, I’m on mobile)

This would be cool. I can’t see anything when I’m taxing and just take the easy way out and have the taxi ribbons on. Would like to have an airport chart on the EFB or one of the screens in the Longitude and do it that way instead.

If you don’t have access to Navigraph, freeware Little Navmap can be really helpful.

Unfortunately I’m on console so I don’t get the cool little extra gizmos and gadgets the PC players get. That would certainly be nice to have though.

Third party providers do this using ADB data, which we do not presently have available to us. We also have some other technological constraints, including the inability to get data from the sim complete enough for that kind of map, and severe performance penalties when drawing that many vectors on HTML canvas.

In short, I do not think it is feasible for us to implement this at this time, unfortunately.

Bummer - Navigraph will keep collecting their [I’ve stopped paying attention to how much ] from me a bit longer then :joy:

Very much appreciate the explanation and transparency!

I use LNM but I wasn’t aware you could place a docked view in MSFS. This seems very useful: how does one do that?

Click the “Window” tab on the top menu bar in Little Navmap, then select “Keep in Foreground” from the list.

Or, if you don’t need full functionality while you’re in the cockpit, you could use LNM VR. Yeah it’s designed for VR but works just the same in flatscreen.

Cool, thanks to both of you. Will try it out

It seems to me that for this to work, LNM VR needs to be installed and LNM has to be running?

Umm, well, yeah… it’s an interface for LNM that adds a toolbar button to the top row to open it in a window in your cockpit (like the weather panel etc). You can resize and move it wherever and it “stays on top” like the other toolbar windows. You need to have the main LNM app running at the same time (in the background).

Thanks for the explanation - I think I’ll stick with just having the main LNM app running in the background.

And after LNM VR Panel 2.0 update, it’s possible to run it inside Asobo EFB. It was also possible earlier with separate mod (LNM EFB app), but it’s not needed anymore.
