I’ve seen this issue was raised before, but not much feedback.
I am using the Microsoft Elite controller, using the 2 of the right thumb buttons to increase and decrease throttle.
The problem here is the throttle response being way too much accelerated.
When pressing and holding one of the throttle buttons, there’s one initial movement and then the throttle lever accelerates to reach its limit almost instantly.
It makes it impossible to do any adjustment this way. The work around I found is to give throttle inputs with single presses on the buttons, but that’s not the ideal experience either.
Those who have used X-Plane the same way with buttons, will know what I mean, the throttle response is so much smoother.
Was wondering if anyone has been able to find a solution for this issue.
Button Y : increase throttle
Button B : decrease throttle
In the control options, there is also a function for “increase throttle (small)”, but strangely there seems to be no equivalent for decrease (small).
The difference between the normal throttle and the small is not huge though.
The “small” is also very fast going up with the throttle.
It’s the same with using buttons for trim (electric trim). The acceleration starts very slowly, but very quickly ramps up (exponential vs linear acceleration) to stupid speeds, making it very difficuly to set it precisely. And there’s no way around it.
It was a very bad design decision IMHO. Acceleration is not necessarily a bad idea. The way it was implemented is. A linear or light logarithmic curve would have been better.
Agree. I have used what you call “work around” since I started using the program. What gets me in trouble more than acceleration is the deceleration. When flying some planes, like the TBM 930, the power will instantly go into reverse thrust if you use too long a press of the “B” . Then it takes a quick messing with those two buttons to get back into forward thrust rather than speeding up the reverse.
To solve this, I have assigned a button on the controller to bring thrust to zero, very useful for landing for example.
You can also use it when you want minimum thrust, it’s just easier to bring it back to zero first and then give it a few presses to your desired setting, and in this way you don’t go on reverse.
It’s the acceleration bug, aka the 10 degree heading bug. It’s supposed to happen as a “feature” but is a bit fierce atm. If you hold down a switch or a key, instead of a momentary button, the input keeps getting scanned and then accelerates to get changes done quicker. Mostly it’s a pain in the backside.
Improvements are promised in the next update, apparently.
I noticed also the fast acceleration with the heading and autopilot buttons, but it never occurred me it could be linked the same issue as the throttle. It makes sense though.
That’s a completely different issue. The 10 degree bug isn’t caused by the same acceleration. That’s already been solidly tied to being an issue with controllers with “always on” switches that trigger acceleration of larger increments (10). LIke if you hold your XBOX button down to change heading… it will start at 1, then after a bit switch to 10. It will NEVER increase by more than 10 degrees.
The acceleration in the trim and throttle is different. That curve is hardcoded into the controls and isn’t triggered by anything external. Their acceleration curve is just too steep and acceleration keeps increasing the longer you hold the button down. Just load up a Cessna or other plane with a trim wheel, and watch the trim wheel in your virtual cockpit while you hold the electric trim button down. You’ll see the wheel accelerate faster and faster the longer you hold.
I assigned the menu button (the one with 3 horizontal bars) to cut back throttle to zero.
For throttle up and down I use Y and B , so the menu button isn’t too far away, using your right thumb. Buttons X and A, I use for the aileron trim.
Posted about this in September… Still not fixed? Have been checking this game to see if I buy it again… I guess I’ll stick with FSX as I don’t want a giant joystick or yoke on my desktop. I prefer to use an xbox controller.
Don’t let this issue discourage you from upgrading. This is really a minor annoyance, compared with how much better experience you have with FS2020.
Besides that, you can work around it and get used to it with the Xbox controller.
By the way, I also want something easy to grab and fly. I sit at the desk most of the time to work and can’t be bothered to move around a big joystick, throttle and pedals every time.
You can have all that with an Xbox controller, ailerons, elevator, rudder, power, trim and brakes.
If you can, get the Xbox Elite , it makes a massive difference from any other regular gamepad controller I tried before.
Seems like it was fixed for the throttle, probably in the last upgrade. I just noticed it today.
The response is linear now, during the whole range from 0 to full and back.
Anyone else noticed the same ?
