I think they are one and the same thing. When the tile swaps it would be most obvious if it were green at one LOD, and grey/white in another. But that isn’t always the case.
I’ll check CMF2 shortly…yep, I have that tile darkening here.
Testing with slew mode to get a fairly precise figure, you first start seeing the different tiles at 1400ft. I had the plane pointing straight down.
Then at around 700ft another change occurs.
That’s the last change before you get to the ground. Everything above 1400ft that is the same tile, or rather no noticeable change in the tone of the tiles.
Compare this to one of the mountains opposite Courchevel.
Because its on a slope the altitude AGL is not as absolute as on flat ground as I cannot say for certain whether the plane is pointing exactly straight down, but its the same issue as above.
Here I am pointing “straight down” at that mountain side, roughly 2000ft above it.
When I get to just under 1800ft AGL, the tiles change to the white ones.
The next one is more subtle, at around 900ft AGL The tiles are still white, but there is a little more definition on the black areas.
And another LOD level change at about 525ft AGL:
There are several gradations beyond that, but the final one appears to be around 225ft:
I don’t see any difference between this, and what’s happening at CMF2, apart from the change in the tiles being much greater here, because of the colour change being so obviously different. The cause, and effect, are probably identical.
