Started to explore the Lancaster in depth for a bit, particularly the flightmodel. This is in MSFS2020.
Much of it is good. But have other noticed the following?
- Controls very twitchy, particularly elevator
- Controls do not stiffen at high speed
- Mixture does not change engine performance at altitude.
- Reducing mixture in flight to just above killing the engines gives negative thrust and zero fuel flow.
- Supercharger does not seem to do anything. Perhaps its permanently āONā
- The radiator coolers do not actually cool the engines
- Changing bomb weights in-flight in the weight menu ( to simulate bomb drop) does not reduce the total weight. May be an MSFS issue..
Iām surprised that she nevertheless makes it to 20.000 ft with a full bomb load and starting with full fuel. But she needs full throttle and full prop forward.
Please feel to laugh at me! I naively bought this aircraft in the expectation that I would actually be able to drop the bombs it carries - particularly the famous bouncing bomb in the Op Chastise version! But I can find no means to do this at all. The bomb release mechanism seems to be completely disabled. Is this because MSFS 2020 does not allow warplanes to drop bombs? Have I wasted my money? Or am I simply missing some procedure or switch to allow me to make the release? Please be kind in any replies!!
Iāll save my money and enjoy the real lancaster flying over my home a few times a year instead. itās always thrilling to hear it go by.
I donāt own this aircraft but understand it was not designed to drop any ordnance. The good news is the āaltitude definingā lights work on the dams version, so you can at least practice dropping the Upkeep bomb! I imagine that might be quite a challenge.
MSFS has never allowed bombs or guns to be operable for planes purchased in the Marketplace. The Lancaster is no exception.

Pilot and crew not visible externally in MSFS 2024 for me, but I might be doing something wrong. Iāve loaded everyone up in the EFB

Iāve also noticed that the superchargers donāt seem to do anything. (Iām on 2024). But my manifold pressure doesnāt decrease much over 13000 ft so I think youāre right that theyāre automatic or always on. I still flip the switch for fun though
Theyāre automatic, the switch is for ground testing.
