Try removing the Reno Air Races and Reno Aircraft Class packs. That worked for me.
Lotek, you might be on to something there as I can tell you this about those packs. I create new screenshot thumbnails for all of my default, payware, and freeware aircraft. MSFS uses a virtual file system that allows you to reference an installed file and depending on if the folder name you use comes after the original files you want to substitute, then MSFS will read the contents of the latter folder instead of the originals. So, I have all aircraft default thumbnails in a folder named āZZZZ_Default_Thumbnailsā and the supporting manifest.json and layout.json to go with it. Itās the last folder in my community folder. All of the replacement screenshots (12,000+ of them) load correctly except the Reno packs. For some reason, they are not respecting the virtual file system in MSFS. I submitted a ticket to Asobo months ago about itā¦crickets. Iād bet dollars to donuts, this could be a potential piece of the puzzle.
In my case it turns out that ā¦ when I buy or install something new ā¦ I have to remove something else.
From the outside it is hard to understand how many āitemsā a package/airport is adding ā¦ so when I did buy/install a new asset ā¦ I did remove a coupe (2 to 10) existing assets.

RELEASE NOTES 1.33.5.0
- Fixed a bug where having too many installed Marketplace content would result in the game being stuck on the āChecking for Updatesā screen
Looks like they are finally going to fix it!!
bug seems to be fixed on my installation
Sounds promising indeed.
Sadly the āDrone roll bugā is not affecting Asobo revenue ā¦ otherwise it might have been fixed a year ago.
This is soo bad that MS feels the need to wait to release this patch. It should be released ASAP. My days on the Marketplace are over. Congrats MS. You win. Unbelievable!
Mine too - nothing changed until today on XBox. Wrote this them (MS) again via EMail, as they asked for my satisfaction after support.
Before SU12, all of my 1000+ DLC packages worked fine. After SU12, I have 51 DLC that I can no longer use. These include Official Content from the Marketplace, Community Folder content that is also Official content (just purchased outside of the Marketplace before it was later released in the Marketplace), and Community Folder content that is both payware and freeware. I spent MONTHS doing trial and error testing in order to narrow it down to just these 51 packages, and I have NO resolution for these paid DLC!
I contacted Microsoft about the issue, but all I got was a long list of canned suggestions of things to try, all of which I had already done. I contacted all of the DLC producers about issues with their individual content. I got the same answer from all of themā¦ That they tested their content in the base sim alone and experienced no issues, so it must not be their fault. The problem is none of them test with other DLC, so they donāt observe the conflicts with other DLC that the consumers do.
So whose responsibility is to resolve compatibility issues between DLC content producers?
The latest problem for me is WU8, all of which caused this problem to return (another 28 packages completely unusable!) I immediately had to uninstall all of WU8.
Since SU12, MSFS 2020 has been an utter disaster, and with WU8, itās just going from bad to worse.
Microsoft/Asobo need to address this issue, because the DLC producers arenāt.
This is not a problem of third party DLC producers. The issue could be also reproduced with Microsoft content only. However MS/Asobo have only published around 800 items so far and therefore they are below the addon count limit. Fix is included in beta now so itās expected to go live in next update. I wasted 1 year due to this error as well until I found this post and the reason that explained the bug.
Cheers
I can confirm that 1025 is the limit and the source of the problem. (THANKS!!!)
I had exactly 1025 items in my Official Packages folder, so adding āanythingā else would cause the problem to return. Thanks to Lotek420 for the great suggestion to remove the āReno Air Racesā pack! Iāve never used it, and really have no interest to ever do so either. Removing it alone reduced my folder count from 1025 to 969. I can probably add back in āall 51ā of the packages that are currently disabled. Good to finally have an understanding of the cause, and a method of how to work around it. Thanks again.
I recommend upgrading to the beta update 1.33.5.0. where this issue is addressed and fixed. See my post above.
The current beta is very stable and still works with mutiplayer.
For the last week MSFS loaded first time every time and was completely stable no matter what addons I included, I needed no workarounds. Afer a Windows update yesterday I just got stuck at the checking for updates screen. 23 attempts later trying the MSFS Addons Linker, no internet etc I had no luck.
So reluctantly I swapped to the beta and the sim loaded. Great, until, that is, I tried to actually fly. Now the sim just freezes 30% through loading the flight, every time.
I guess we have to put MSFS 2020 down as the Asobo/MS prototype for MSFS 2024 (best I can hope for). It seems that whenever a fix is put in this current iteration something else breaks.
Consider that DX12 was released in 2015 and is an MS API. 8 years later, 3 after release and DX12 is still in beta in this sim. Amazing.
I love this sim but it hates me. It seems that it will never be fixed. Lets hope that MSFS 2024 will be solid.
1024, as a power of 2, would perhaps at one time have been a more expected limit, but maybe Iām just a throwback to the days when 16 bits was a lot.
Hi all. I have the same problem on the PC version. Currently have 1134 add-ons - of which just over 1100 are from the Store.
I initially had the āChecking for Updatesā issue after the Xbox/Asobo/AI screen. After multiple days trying to resolve that with every solution on the internet I could findā¦ finally got around that issue by pulling the network cable and starting with no internet. It now it now loadsā¦ but I can no longer see any purchased content in the Content Manager
Concur with above discussionsā¦ seems to be related to either some manifestation of an add-ons number limit (although with some it seems that this is less a factor!) or some sort of network/configuration issue. Whicheverā¦ it would be great if Asobo could sort it asap!
At the moment there are two issues:
-
Can only see a running circle in Content Manager when seeking to see what has been purchased/installed or requires update. There is a ādarkenedā set of stats in the background that indicates have totals of purchases content at 0 on the top left - which of course my purchases in the store and bank account would argue is very much incorrect. I can still purchase new items - but just cannot see them in Content Manager
-
Cannot exit the Sim cleanly any more - when quitting to desktop and selecting Yes to exit Flight Simulatorā¦ it just stays locked on the same screen with the Yes/No prompt and the music continues to play in an endless loop. Iāve checked also - no disk activity, very small network activity and 6.2-6.8% CPU activity. Only way to exit to desktop is to go to Task Manager and stop the āMicrosoft Flight Simulatorā process
A fix would really be appreciated as (a) canāt really update anything any more, (b) canāt actually install any new purchases, and (c) canāt cleanly exit the simulator.
As a resultā¦ Iām not purchasing any more items so hopefully as more users find the same, Asobo/Microsoft seeing less potential sales might motivate a prioritisation of the issues
I will also check MSFS Addons Linker to see if I can find a solution similar to that outlined above (many thanks to those providing all the information above)
Note: To get around the āChecking for Updatesā issue on the PC Store versionā¦ when trying to start without the network connection - youāll have to go to Microsoft Store Settings first and turn your āOffline Permissionsā to ON and then try to load the sim again to activate this. It appears this is to allow you to not have the licence check to start - and you are effectively saying for that App that this PC is the only one that can run it offline. You can then get it to load fully into the Sim
UPDATE: Found that when stopping the Microsoft Flight Simulator process via Task Managerā¦ next time loaded the simulator I got the āChecking for Updatesā issue again after initial splash screens at beginning of simulator load. Whilst originally resolved after using the disconnect network plug approachā¦ it appears that cancelling via Task Manager will potentially cause this to happen again (not sure if anyone else found this)
As noted above This loading issue is fixed in the beta. So you will have the fix soon. 29th June I think is the date it will come out of beta. The freezing upon exit is something that has happened on and off for me since the sim launched, not sure of any fix for it as it seems somewhat random to my installation.
I got back with successful login via XBox for the first time since a very long time (about 3 month, tried again every day). 3,15 GB Update was running spontaneously before. Release notes are 1.33.8.0.
But some of my previous addons are uninstalled - donāt know why.
Will not change/install anything for a few days
Could anyone confirm if AAU2 released today, June 22, 2023, if this has fixed this issue?
Yes ā¦ AAU2 resolved this issue for me.
Thank you!
Seems to be fixed!
