Airshow Assistant - feedback and discussion

Found out tonight that AI Traffic Controller does the same thing. FSLTL was the only way I could run traffic and get the C-17 to work without a KC-135 on top of it. At least that works for now as I didn’t want to lose my AI planes. But this mod is awesome.

It really does refuel everything.

MSFS No Weapons Policy…

Really fantastic. Hopefully in a future update, the process can be limited to only internal tanks without adding external tanks to one’s loadout during the refueling.

Is this usable with the Vulcan? Flying with wingman also in Vulcan? Can you also have wingman while taxi to runway or “only” on the runway?

Xbox

Wonder if there is any possibility of having Airshow Assistant and if I may add FSLTL for Xbox Users through Marketplace free or at same price its for PC Users.

HI. Loving this addon but tried to air to air refuel at night. Realised that the tanker has no lights whatsoever making it virtually impossible to hook up. Hoping a future update will rectify this including the ring of luminous buttons round the drogue Thank you. Keep up the excellent work.
.

That would be awesome :+1:
I’m hoping the focused aerial refueling product from Miltech includes those features upon it’s release. Gonna try this to see if the addon probe lights work well enough to not need a workaround though.

With so many cool and fun features included with Airshow Assistant though, it’s hard to imagine what new feature will be included at no additional cost to existing customers in the future. Maybe a replay function to evaluate one’s execution of maneuvers.

Well, learned a couple of things from this exercise:

  1. There is no way I am able to connect using headtracking and 2D - even after switching back to daytime. I tried for an hour and couldn’t connect. It’s like trying to precision fly while looking through a telescope, due to how the MSFS 2D magnification works. Using VR, I can connect on the first attempt and it only takes about 3 minutes from a pre-contact position off the left wing.

  2. Without a TACAN to find the tanker or the tanker having nav lights, I agree. It’s almost impossible to find the tanker at night, even when you know it just spawned right in front of you.

As far as the basket light, once you find the tanker and get into position, an addons probe light is sufficient. The basket reflects an addons probe light enough. It would be nice if it reflected and was visible at a longer distance, but it works - at least for the Heatblur F-14B I tested with at night.

The tanker is there but barely visible at all, as I’m just about to make contact with the probe.

Basket reflecting the addons probe light

Yes. I just done it. Refuelled from the IL76 because it has a central basket. Haven’t tried it with the other tanker because it has a boom. I have flown with wingmen while tanking.

It’s definitely possible, at least on pro difficulty (the 2nd of 3).I don’t know what the difference between Pro and Ace difficulty is.

My first attempt on Pro with the F-35 took about 10-15 minutes, but my 2nd try was as fast as a minute from spawning the tanker to connecting. In 2D with TrackIR.

Although increasing the connection hit area would allow the connection in 2D for me, doing so would completly negate any satisfaction I get from the challenge.

Since I have the hardware for precise control, I consider it unacceptable to allow myself not to experience the challenge as “realistically” as can be presented within MSFS. I mentioned the difference I observe between 2D and VR for acknowledgment: If a person doesn’t have VR, connecting to a tanker is exceptionally difficult, and I personnally agree with you. It is totally acceptable (IMO) for non-VR users to avoid the Ace setting and use the Pro setting. I personally wouldn’t think any less of a person’s skill by doing so.

It could be screen distortion from using an ultrawide monitor (3440x1440), so my situation and observation are unique to my setup. For me, trying to hook up with the tanker using 2D on Ace level is the only thing in this game that is unachievable. VR makes aerial refueling unbelievably easier in MSFS, like it does for flying helicopters in the game - at least for me.

I’ll give Ace level a shot tomorrow.

The actual KC-46A has an integral centerline drogue system. Would love to see it modeled.

that is true, no work were made for night AAR, but planned - feel free to add your wishes and they will be respected.

this exactly thing planned, especially that we already developed replay functionality for ALBATROSS gliders racing app, will be easy to move it into this tool as well.

if you are on ACE mode, it indeed has too strict collision rules, sometimes not working properly when you are not catching basket smoothly. these will be reviewed soon, along with hose and basket simulation and animation.

PRO has small magnet forces affecting basket and helping to catch it. ACE - just collision forces, i.e. you need to contact basket with probe

that is good catch, current AAR system has possibility to add up to 5 fuel sources per tanker, so it will be not a problem to have 3rd drogue + boom.

Also - in next update

Small remark for content creators and aircraft/tools developers - you may request early access to all TouchingCloud product updates by request. Also, if you are active pilot and has many add-ons installed (both PC and Xbox), you are also can be part of the team participating in early testing and discussion about applied changes and improvements. Feel free to send your requests in private message or to discord user the_alx

I did it! I made a successful connect after almost 20 minutes at Pro Level in 2D and with TrackIR. It was sometimes pretty frustrating and I probably would ripped the hose clean off a couple of times if it were fully simulated …

Unfortunately I got distracted, didn’t stay on top of the power and diconnected after about 45 seconds, but the hard part was done at that point.

I think my stick sensitivity still wasn’t at a high enough setting too, because even the tiniest input lead to too big movements with the F-35.

I recorded the whole thing, and could upload it if anyone is interested.

Were you in Auto FCS mode? It might be helpful to use Manual FCS.

You can switch to Manual FCS in the F-35 by using the Flaps Down Keybind. You will have more precice control in manual mode (i.e. manual trimming / non-FBW). You switch back to Auto with the Flaps Up keybind.

It is much easier to aerial refuel, fly in formation, and maintain precise control of addons that don’t use FBW.

I was in auto. I will try manual mode next time, thanks!

I don’t have the F-35 yet but I have the IFT M346 which has FBW flight controls. I find the M346 to be much harder to connect to the basket than the IFT/Heatblur F-14. The 346 is so precise and responsive that my tendency to overcorrect is magnified. It really requires me to practice at it for a long time to stand any chance of a connection but I honestly don’t give it enough time because the F-14 is a much more fluid response that I find more enjoyable. I have been considering the F-35 though just to have the different refueling options available. This AAR capability has completely taken over my simming now lol.
